We recently brought you news from Georgia – a country sandwiched between Europe, Russia and the Middle East – where there is a fight for national identity underway. On one side, pro-European progressives seeking change in the once-USSR domain. Opposing them, those fighting to retain the heritage values of the country. Stirring this melting pot is far-right extremist groups and religious leaders.
It culminated this week in an open riot targeting the LGBTI community. At the launch of the Oscar nominated gay-themed film – And Then We Danced – a 100-strong mob clashed with riot police leaving some attendees injured and 12 people arrested. We take you live to Georgia’s capital of Tblisi for the latest with our guest, Giorgi Tabagari from Tbilisi Pride.
