The e-book is lame!!! Both narrators and the stories.

Not scary.... Even for children. The tone of the narrator does not sound like she expresses fear.

Have more emotion when reading. The accent is also irritating to listen too.

A rewarding listen

If you've not read any du Maurier short stories, what a treat this collection is!

Fourteen stories, first published in 1980, are included: No Motive, Panic, The Supreme Artist, Adieu Sagesse, Fairytale, The Rendezvous, La Sainte-Vierge, Leading Lady, Escort, The Lover, The Closing Door, Indiscretion, Angels and Archangels, and Split Second.

Each story is a brilliant gem, showing du Maurier to be a master of this difficult form of writing. She is able to fully illuminate character and provide an engaging story question with immediacy and interest.

Some stories are heart-breaking, some darkly comic. At times the innocent suffer, at others the arrogant are brought down. Each one improves upon acquaintance, revealing more with each listen.

As if that were not enough, Edward de Souza's narration is pitch-perfect. He has the range, sophistication, and emotion to portray each character accurately.

If you love a well-turned phrase and a twist in your tales, give this collection a listen. You're sure to be rewarded time and again.

I'm a fan of Daphne's novels, but felt left hanging and frustrated with the vague and inconclusive endings of these short stories. Perhaps it's just a literary style that doesn't appeal to me since the ratings were high for this book. Sadness...

Without a doubt this is the best audiobook I have bought so far.

Total relaxation and immersion in the stories (especially after a long days work)

Mary Fallon in No motive, a devasting story that is clever,gripping and wonderfully descriptive and emotive.

I will listen to these stories again, many times, over the next few years. They are the epitome of what a good short story is all about.

Didn't realise what a master of the short story Daphne du Maurier was until I listened to these. Great stories, very varied, nicely read, and many feel very contemporary. Highly recommended.

I read the stories when I was a kid, and they are just as good as I remembered them. The reader is good too. Unfortunately the best available sound quality is really scratchy and staticky, which is why I'm giving the book only 3 stars.

A good little story.

I read this little novella because I heard it said that Gaskell's later works were her best. In the case of Cousin Phillis I would have to diasagree. It was a sweet little story with well drawn characters but the plot was totally predictable. It seems that in 19th century England being disappointed in love almost always led to a long and near fatal illness from which the young lady, if she survived, emerged vastly improved in temperament and virtue and went on to live a quiet, unremarkable, but socially acceptable life. In this story we are presented with a young woman who is already the height of feminine virtue and beauty but who through a very quiet and confined country life as a minister's only child is completely unacquainted with society. She is, though, in possession of a very fine mind that hungers for greater knowledge and is a great reader, educated in latin and greek. It is perhaps this dangerous combination of unworldly naiveté combined with longing after greater knowledge and understanding of the world that leads her to become infatuated with a charming, handsome, well-travelled and yet inconstant young friend of the family. The drama that ensues is exactly what is to be expected from a story of this period, though written in Mrs. Gaskell's engaging style it was well worth reading.

Critics Loved It - Abrupt Ending

I downloaded thefree Kindle versionof this ebook because I wanted to try another story by Gaskell. I've readThe Moorland Cottageand found that it ended in a strange way.

Cousin Phillis was published in parts and appeared as a serial story in The Cornhill Magazine. (per various web resources) This was the second to last title written by Gaskell before her death. Her last novel beingWives and Daughters- one of her most successful titles.

Spoiler free plot -

Paul Manning is a young man setting out on his own for the first time in the working world. His job as a railway worker takes him far from home. He is a clerk and just learning the ways of career and life. He discovers that he has distant relatives in the area, The Holmans.

The head of that household is an extremely hard working farmer and minister. I found him to be a well-drawn and interesting character. The Minister has a plain, simple wife, and a lovely daughter named Phillis. Paul spends a lot of time with this family. The story is about his relationship and interaction with them as well as with his boss, Mr. Holdsworth. It's mostly a family drama, mixed with romance, throwing in religious elements, and a lot of thought provoking sections on duty and life choices.

I hate to tell readers NOT to read a book, but I'm close to doing that.

With the exception of The Turn of the Screw, Henry James is better known for his beautiful, byzantine prose than he is for narratives that will keep a reader up all night, but The Other House is a pause-resister. Perhaps that is what inevitably happens when a plot revolves around a horrific murder committed in the heart of blue-blooded England.

Graeme Malcolm, a Scottish television and Broadway actor known for his work on Boardwalk Empire, lends his lovely, mature accent and impeccable meter to James's ornate sentences. As James conceived this novel as a play, it is especially well suited to being performed.

The oddest Henry James novel

This novel is unlike anything else produced by Henry James and if you are at all interested, take care NOT to read a word about the novel anywhere, for almost every online account or mention (and every book back cover) gives away a tremendously important detail that should be held for the reading itself. The Other House is Henry James getting as close to Agatha Christie, eerily close (she was six when this book was published in 1896), as could be possible for him and it is indeed that kind of tale, with a far stranger and more disturbing ending than anything she ever wrote. Certainly this is not the first or even second James anyone should read, but some of the customary signs of fine consciousness are there -- which many people like and some people hate. The subtle interchange of hyper-subtle points in conversation (no real people could ever catch the hints offered so delicately by someone else sanding before them). has nothing to do with the Twitter generation. These people are a different species and full citizens of the James universe, even if they live on his oddest planet. This is a genuine page-turner and perhaps not that much more than a pot-boiler -- you decide. It gives nothing away to say that critical comparisons with Ibsen are probably silly, and yet this book does have a strange northern chill. As far as the narrator Graeme Malcolm. He does a fantastic job, as he always does. If at first his frequent pauses seem too frequent, you get used to them soon and then you understand that they do wonders to help the listener follow Henry James famously winding sentences and geometrically multiplied clauses. There is not an ounce of prissiness in Malcolm's readings ever, and it is great to have a Henry James read as he reads it. It would be a fine thing to hear him do The Golden Bowl or The Wings of the Dove, books that are fleshier, even earthier than many think.
