Not what I expected

I ate this series up since I opened part 1 on my Kindle. It gripped me from the start and I dived into this installment first thing in the morning of release. It left me somewhat confused and a little disappointed. I found myself skimming a lot of the descriptions to get to the action. The beginning was fantastic, and had me turning pages to get going. But then it sort of... I don't know. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, so let's just say there are some events that seem pointless. Added for shock value but the shock's not really there because it gets buried under other stuff. The relationships confused me. Like Saba and her brother. They were at such odds at the end of the second book, and all of a sudden they're okay, and it just seemed like their entire history was lost through the whole book until the very end. Same with Saba and Tommo, it didn't feel like a natural progression. Characters were introduced and their only role was tying up loose plot ends, like magically providing Saba with just the thing she needed at just the right time. Concepts that had been established as solid and true got turned on their heads and I didn't understand why, except that maybe it would have ruined the surprise, but all it did was undermine the foundation that got established with two previous books.

With all that said, there was a lot of good to this book. It kept me reading all the way to the end. I was there with Saba through all her triumphs and mistakes. There were characters and relationships I liked. I loved how DeMalo evolved. I loved that it wasn't about war, but about rebuilding. I loved how the main conflict got resolved. But I did not love the very end, the final two chapters. It is very poetic, but it throws Saba back to the way she was in the beginning, as if all the growing she's done as a person was such a burden she just shrugged it all off and moved on. It cheapened her character for me. I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with me. This is still some very good writing, and a good conclusion to the story. I guess it's just my personal preferences that made me wish for something... more.

Selfish, Unlikeable Heroine--No Dialogue Punctuation

Book 3 sees the author continue to omit quotation marks in what seems to be a lazy and pretentious effort to give the narrator a unique voice. And like in books 1 and 2, this makes it almost impossible at times to tell if characters are actually speaking, thinking or the passage was intended to be descriptive. It adds nothing to the story and ruins the immersion when a reader has to stop and figure out what the text is trying to convey.

If that were the worst, I'd give the book a couple more stars and move on but it's not. The author is undeniably very talented. She has a wonderful ability to create memorable settings and characters and she tosses some great action into the mix as well. But where this ultimately falls flat is the lack of growth that the main character fails to show over the three book arc.

The book begins with an emotionally wounded Saba, haunted by the memories of those whose lives she had a part in ending.

Depressing and hard to get through

Difficult to get through because of the plot very depressing would not recommend although a lot of other books by Kate Myron are very good.

Beautiful, real and engaging

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favourite character was probably the main characters best friends mum, that's probably a weird choice but its because of what she symbolises, even though no family is perfect, she makes people feel secure and creates a warm friendly home

What about Lucy Middleweeks performance did you like?

Everything, she was a perfect choice for the book. She manages to get across the main characters naivety and her strength wonderfully.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

A must for all young people

Everyone should read this, no matter what age, I was in floods of tears by the end, it is a masterclass in understanding young people and their needs and also quite simply an excellent piece of storytelling

This is a very cute book with a lot of good information and activities in it. It has a lot of "old school" things that "kids these days" don't get exposed to.

Great Read for Girls

I got this for my step daughter for Christmas and she really has started to love this book. She reads from it most nights and has been sharing with her friends at school. I will definitely add other books from this series to her library.

Every girl should have this!

Including grandmothers, like me! A classic resource, filled with low-tech fun. I bought it as a baby gift, but it ended up being a duplicate. So my granddaughter (who already has a copy) was delighted to be able to give it to a friend's little sister.

I bought this as a gift for my oldest granddaughter. I hope she enjoys it as much as I enjoyed looking through it before i gave it to her.

Read the latest, up-to-date, new edition (not the 2008 first printing)

The science adventure story in this book is timeless because it really happened at the 2002 Winter Olympics. But if you want to read the most up-to-date author's note (which sheds light on how the story fits in The Big Picture) and see the most current resources, then get the latest, newest edition, which is updated when the book is reprinted. The book's Publication Date officially remains "2008" but new copies are most likely to be from the latest, up-to-date printing.

An amazing story!

Truth is always stranger than fiction, and this story is a must for all young children to read. Any attempt to cheat by taking drugs in sports is

a big story - and will ultimately bring down the athelete. Win fair and clean - a strong messaage.
