Greek Introductory Course

I have been so impressed by this that I have ordered the CDs with the Foundation and Advanced course.

Very logical construction and approach, and it is easy to listen again and again.

It opens hearts

I bought the course four days before my wife and I went to Greece. I only had time to listen through it once. When I arrived in Greece I could communicate on a basic level with the people. One of the nice memories from this vacation was the warm smiles from the Greek people who appreciated the effort one makes to speak their language. You receive a better service and in some cases you will get friends for life. This course opens people?s hearts, because it helps the user to show kindness and respect with just a small vocabulary. And the teaching methods a very effective.

I've tried several different 'Learn Greek' courses over the years and this is the best by far. Very easy to understand and well presented. I'm about to buy the Foundation course now. This is THE best way to learn the language!

This Method actually Works!

About 10 years ago, after many holidays spent in Greece as well as covering the BBC Greek course, I attended Greek for Beginners evening class, and then embarked on the Improvers course - in total, a period of three academic years of evening classes, resulting in 'freezing' when attempting to speak the language. This was partly due to the written work being considered as an important part of 'homework'.

What a mistake! Although I now regret giving all my Greek Language text books and dictionaries away, it doesn't affect the enjoyment because one can relax and speak it as it comes and with a wonderfully, slightly zany character as teacher on the Introductory Programme , I'm at last having fun experiencing the language at the age of 79.

Helpful for tourists

A nice book of useful phrases. Compact size makes it good for travel. Be aware that the CD is skewed towards Portugal Portuguese rather than Brazilian Portuguese.

They are fun and fast

I have several of theses small books by Berlitz. They are fun and fast. But don't expect to hold any conversation longer than a few sentences. I'd love it if they could expand theses and make them a little more detailed. I do love the pronunciation guide they use. I never could understand the International phonetics guides-still don't get how to pronounce the schwa!!

Native Tongue

I gave this phrase book to a family friend as a parting gift on her travels to South America. According to her it was well used and studied through her trip through Brazil.

On The Move is Awesome!

Chinese On The Move is a lively, sound effect and rock riff filled language CD that gets the listener into the Chinese language right away. Most students will supplement their studies with classes and thick textbooks; if so, this CD will be judged for what it is: a tool focusing the student on the phrases and vocabulary suitable for a beginner. The speakers are smart and concise and the CD is very enjoyable. For me listening to Chinese On The Move has been time well spent for getting back into the language after two courses and two years off.

Can be useful, better when you also use Pimsleur

Being a "devotee" of the Pimsleur method of learning languages, I inevitably compare all other products to that.

These CDs provide quite a bit of good information and explanation, the speech is very clear, and the vocabulary and phrases are refreshingly useful after working through ten Pimsleur CDs talking about how I would like to order two beers. (And I still couldn't introduce myself...)

But the Pimsleur methodology can't be beat and is much better at building a language structure upon which you expand. In CHINESE on the Move, the instructors are so busy blabbing and explaining that you don't end up speaking very much yourself, even though they tell you to.

Suggestion: Do the Pimsleur Intro first, then use these as an extremely valuable supplement.

Excellent

I have been trying to learn Polish for my families benefit. My wife is Polish and her parents cannot speak English at all. I have used another website previously which uses Collins dictionaries, but that really only taught me a great selection of words, however having just completed the first couple of units of this Audiobook I can already use and apply words in sentences, albeit simplistic sentences, definitely a bigger stride towards learning, and a great starter. I just wish I'd found this sooner!

Starts off well.

The course starts off well introducing some basic phrases from the Polish Language. However by the third chapter too much emphasis is placed on remembering difficult vocabulary, most of which will probably never come in useful. Polish is a difficult language to learn for an English speaker and time needs to be given to the student to repeat sounds and phonemes numerous times until the vocabulary becomes stored in the long term memory. Like many audio courses, Collins fails here by expecting too much too soon from the student. Not enough time is given for repetition and a basic structure on which to use the language is not taught well enough (modal verbs etc.).

Very easy to understand and useful!

Strongly recommended for beginners. Easy to learn and very useful for your life in Poland!

One Of The Best I Have Encountered

"Starting Out in Arabic" by Living Language is definitely one of the best that I have encountered. I am using several Arabic language audio books in my personal effort to learn the Arabic language. This is based upon Arabic as it is spoken in Syria and numerous other Arabic-speaking areas (as opposed to the Arabic which is based upon the type of dialect spoken in Egypt).

Great introduction

I have lived in China for 4 years now. I am well beyond what is presented here, but if you are planning a short trip this will give you the rudiments of the language. I endorse Living Language products and would recommend that you also download the PDF and follow along to further speed your progress. Both Living Language and Pimsleur products have made me conversant in Chinese. Now I am working hard at reading and writing.
