Sound Effects Can Be Very Distracting ...
Before buying this particular dramatized Audio Bible, I had purchased other non-dramatized Audio Bibles only. I had heard samples of some Audio Bibles that sounded like theatrical plays and I wasn't interested in that type of Audio Bible. I had (and STILL have) a preference for an Audio Bible that is strictly read - without music, inflection and definitely without sound effects!
Recently, I decided to branch out a bit and purchase a few Audio Bibles in different versions, especially versions other than the version that I memorize Scripture in, so that I could hear a variety for comparison.
In the The Word of Promise New Testament Audio Bible NKJV I found the sound effects to be very distracting in the books that I listened to, rather than complementary.
For example, in the book of 1 Corinthians there is the scratching of a quill pen as if what is being said is being written at the same time. The idea is very clever but the execution just doesn't seem to work in my opinion. Then at one point, it seems to change to a crackling fire. One of the main things I don't like about the dramatized version is inflection in the voice by the reader. This influences the meaning of the passage so that it is not neutral in the presentation of Scripture. I see this as a problem.
Schmultz but the deal is overwhelmingly good, hence 5 stars
This is a rare example of a deal being so good that it merits 5 stars despite complaints. I could tell a lot of effort and expense went into preparing this audiobook. For me this is not ideal although there is always a benefit to hearing through the lens or interpretation of others.
In my view, the drama in this 20-CD work is sometimes a bit over the top. Of course this has nothing to do with the content, just the presentation of it. The background music is continual and serves to add grandeur to each word read by the excellent actor participants. For me this is distracting.
This is very well done. I listen to it ...
This is very well done. I listen to it over and over again in traffic in the car. There is a small amount of music and sound effects to make it more interesting. I bought this unheard; if I had heard some of it I would have purchased it long before I did.
