Publisher's Summary:
As a mysterious virus infects the world's population, a girl embarks on a quest to find a cure in this thrilling debut from Emily Ziff Griffin.
Luisa is ready for her life to start. Five minutes ago. And she could be on her way, as her extraordinary coding skills have landed her a finalist spot for a fellowship sponsored by Thomas Bell, the world's most brilliant and mercurial tech entrepreneur. Being chosen means funding, mentorship, and, most importantly, freedom from her overbearing mother. Maybe Lu will even figure out how to control the rare condition that plagues her: whenever her emotions run high, her physical senses kick into overload, with waves of color, sound, taste, and touch flooding her body.
But Luisa's life is thrust into chaos as a deadly virus sweeps across the globe, killing thousands and sending her father into quarantine. When Lu receives a cryptic message from someone who might hold the key to stopping the epidemic, she knows she must do something to save her family - and the world.
Suspenseful, lyrical, and thought-provoking, Light Years features a remarkable heroine on an intensely physical and emotional quest for hope and existential meaning.

She's brilliant but unsure of herself
Emily Ziff Griffin has created a butt-kicking new heroine for the 21st century: Lu, a young coder with synesthesia, who experiences the world through unusual combinations of colors, sound and taste. A boy she likes seems enveloped by the scent of pine. A rival causes her to taste salt. Impending danger causes flashes of blue in her brain. She's brilliant but unsure of herself, seeing her synesthesia as a weird and unfortunate quirk. When a deadly virus starts spreading, Lu tries desperately to piece together a growing mystery as to where it came from, and how it might be stopped. This is a cracking good read: a fast-paced, character-driven narrative with brains as well as heart. Good stuff.
brilliant - a complex
Griffin's characters are flawed and so human that this "disease kills all" novel that could feel familiar instead feels exciting and real. Luisa, her protagonist, is complex not just because of her synesthesia (a rare neurological condition in which two or more of the senses entwine) but because she is stubborn, loyal, insecure, brilliant - a complex, fascinating teen. My one complaint - I want more. I want a sequel. Several, actually. I highly recommend Light Years.
love, art
Light Years is a compelling and gripping story that you'll devour as soon as you crack open the first page. While the book is ostensibly about a mysterious virus, it's about so much more - life, love, art, technology, family, and spirituality. Emily has created a haunting yet heartwarming world and a protagonist who's brave, complicated, intelligent, and empathetic.
Fastest read of my life!
Riveted from cover to cover. Emily Ziff Griffin's writing is clear, authentic, and wise. This not so distant future story of a young woman's journey to the light through the dark, during a virus outbreak, is a beautiful story of strength, courage, technology, and spirit.
