    Author: Iain Anderson
    Narrator: Paul Steven Forrest
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 26 mins

    Release date: 10-03-12
    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks

    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
This Is Our Music, declared saxophonist Ornette Coleman's 1960 album title. But whose music was it? At various times during the 1950s and 1960s, musicians, critics, fans, politicians, and entrepreneurs claimed jazz as a national art form, an Afrocentric race music, an extension of modernist innovation in other genres, a music of mass consciousness, and the preserve of a cultural elite. This original and provocative book explores who makes decisions about the value of a cultural form and on what basis, taking as its example the impact of 1960s free improvisation on the changing status of jazz.
By examining the production, presentation, and reception of experimental music by Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, John Coltrane, and others, Iain Anderson traces the strange, unexpected, and at times deeply ironic intersections between free jazz, avant-garde artistic movements, Sixties politics, and patronage networks. Anderson emphasizes free improvisation's enormous impact on jazz music's institutional standing, despite ongoing resistance from some of its biggest beneficiaries. He concludes that attempts by African American artists and intellectuals to define a place for themselves in American life, structural changes in the music industry, and the rise of nonprofit sponsorship portended a significant transformation of established cultural standards.
At the same time, free improvisation's growing prestige depended in part upon traditional highbrow criteria: increasingly esoteric styles, changing venues and audience behavior, European sanction, withdrawal from the marketplace, and the professionalization of criticism. Thus jazz music's performers and supporters - and potentially those in other arts - have both challenged and accommodated themselves to an ongoing process of cultural stratification.
The book is published by University of Pennsylvania Press.
    Critic Reviews:
"An excellent study of the heyday of one of the most problematic bodies of work in the history of jazz music. . . . Essential." (Choice)
"In this rich and evocative book, Iain Anderson meets the challenge posed by the music and follows its lead into the complex political realignments, shifting racial dynamics, and redefinition of art and entertainment that characterized the subsequent decade." (John Szwed, author of So What: The Life of Miles Davis)
"A fine guide to the debates that raged around free jazz and to the music's unexpected current place in the American arts canon." (Journal of American History)

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
The original book was full of interesting information about the music and musicians. I don't have the background to know whether the sociological arguments were correct but they were at least plausible. I can't recommend the audiobook, however, because the narration was poor. I've been a subscriber to Audible for almost nine years, and I can't remember a narrator who sounded so robotic.

Remember the first time you saw Michael Jackson dance with zombies in "Thriller"? Diamond Dave karate kick with Van Halen in "Jump"? Tawny Kitaen turning cartwheels on a Jaguar to Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again"? The Beastie Boys spray beer in "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)"? Axl Rose step off the bus in "Welcome to the Jungle"?
Remember when all you wanted was your MTV?
It was a pretty radical idea - a channel for teenagers, showing nothing but music videos. It was such a radical idea that almost no one thought it would actually succeed, much less become a force in the worlds of music, television, film, fashion, sports, and even politics. But it did work. MTV became more than anyone had ever imagined.
I Want My MTV tells the story of the first decade of MTV, the golden era when MTV's programming was all videos, all the time, and kids watched religiously to see their favorite bands, learn about new music, and have something to talk about at parties. From its start in 1981 with a small cache of videos by mostly unknown British new wave acts to the launch of the reality-television craze with The Real World in 1992, MTV grew into a tastemaker, a career maker, and a mammoth business.
Featuring interviews with nearly 400 artists, directors, VJs, and television and music executives, I Want My MTV is a testament to the channel that changed popular culture forever.
    Critic Reviews:
"This colorful oral history of MTVs early years doesnt pull punches or waste time. A relentlessly entertaining book, an endlessly quotable volume." (The Onion)
"Wildly entertaining. Music and culture fans of a certain age - you will want this book." (The Washington Post)
"Heres all the dirt on MTVs early days, in one of the funniest books ever written about pop music." (Rolling Stone)

The Most Entertaining Book of the Year
This was simply the most entertaining, engaging audiobook I've listened to in years. It's not just for MTV fans, or just for the demographic that currently watches it in droves. Personally, I never enjoyed watching MTV nearly as much as I enjoyed reading this book about it. If you are even slightly interested in music, popular culture, television, the entertainment industry, or musicians themselves, you will probably love this book too.
It's a remarkable story, of course. This scraggly little video jukebox of a cable channel literally changed television, music, motion pictures and popular culture. More than once. But the key to making this so much more than just a factual recreation of a game-changing cable channel's history lies in a single, brilliant idea: they don't just tell the story, but let the participants themselves tell it in their own words. Culling choice nuggets from literally hundreds of interviews with rock stars, video directors, executives and the scores of people who surround them, the authors then edit and compile pieces of those interviews into a tightly woven narrative. They provide some backstory and context to each part of the music channel's history with concise chapter introductions, and let the rest of the story unfold through the words of the people who created that history. It's messy, honest and human, and the perspectives of the different parties are often contradictory.

    Author: Wyclef Jean, Anthony Bozza
    Narrator: Sam Jean
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 1 min

    Release date: 09-18-12
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 40 votes
    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
Wyclef Jean is one of the most influential voices in hip-hop. He rocketed to fame in the 1990s with the Fugees, whose multiplatinum album, The Score, would prove a landmark in music history, winning two Grammys and going on to become one of the best-selling hip-hop albums of all time. In Purpose, Wyclef recounts his path to fame from his impoverished childhood in "Baby Doc" Duvalier's Haiti and the mean streets of Brooklyn and Newark to the bright lights of the world stage.
The son of a pastor and grandson of a Vodou priest, Wyclef was born and raised in the slums of Haiti, moving with his family to New York when he was nine. He lived in Brooklyn's notorious Marlboro projects until his father, Gesner Jean, took them to Newark, where he converted a burnt-out funeral home into a house for his family and a church for his congregation. But life in New Jersey was no easier for Wyclef, who found it hard to shake his refugee status. Forced to act as a literal and cultural translator for his parents while still trying to master English himself, Wyclef soon learned that fitting in would be a constant struggle. He made his way by competing in "freestyle" rap battles, eventually becoming the best MC in his school. At the same time, Wyclef was singing in his father's choir and learning multiple instruments while also avidly exploring funk, rock, reggae, and jazz - an experience that would forever shape his sound. When Wyclef chose to pursue a career in music over attending theological school, Gesner, who hated rap, nearly disowned him, creating a gulf between father and son that would take nearly a decade to bridge.
Within a few short years, Wyclef would catapult to international renown with the Fugees. In Purpose he details for the first time ever the inside story of the group: their rise and fall, and his relationships with Pras and Lauryn Hill.
Wyclef also looks back with candor at the catastrophic earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010 and his efforts to help rebuild his homeland, including the controversy surrounding YÉle, his aid organization, and his exploratory bid for president of the island nation. The story revealed in Purpose is one of inspiration, full of drama and humor, told in compelling detail, about the incredible life of one of our most revered musical icons.

loved it from start to finish. very good with fun stories and well learned lessons.
    Deep!!!!
Would you consider the audio edition of Purpose to be better than the print version?
Yes the narrator was his brother so it sounded just as if he was telling the story.
    Any additional comments?
I loved loved this book.... I can't imagine going through what he went through as a child. However I would have beat his butt too after all his parents sacraficed, he comes here and do the things he did...Try to kill his grandma oh my god I was stunned lol.. But his rise to fame was that of a man with AMBITION! I applaud him for that. His relationship with Lauren was the best part ever because everyone speculated back then but it wasn't a big story. Great book thanks for sharing
    A Compelling Autobiography!
I really enjoyed this biography. The story was compelling and though it is obviously a little biased (there are two sides to every story) I finished the book liking Wyclef even more.

    Publisher's Summary:
If You're Feeling Sinister shows how Belle & Sebastian transformed themselves over the space of a decade from a slightly shambolic cult secret into a polished, highly entertaining, mainstream pop group. Along the way, the book shows how the internet has revolutionized how we discover new music - often at the cost of romance and mystery.
    Editorial Reviews:
Scott Plagenhoef's examination of If You're Feeling Sinister opens with a look at the aura of mystery and obfuscation around Belle & Sebastian and how this led to the creation of a thriving community of fans centered around the Sinister List. Plagenhoef has no wish to destroy Belle & Sebastian's mystique - as a fan, he understands that part of their appeal lies in their inscrutability. Instead, he explains how the cultural milieu of the mid to late 90s allowed the band to find its own idiosyncratic identity. AudioFile Earphones Award recipient Kevin T. Collins' effortless performance and likeable voice highlight the wistful nostalgia of the band's early beginnings.
    Critic Reviews:
"Plagenhoef knows his subject matter inside and out and has gone the extra mile to research and contextualize the work - a necessary task, since the band refused to be interviewed for the project...it's nice to see a modern classic get some due recognition." (Under the Radar Magazine)

    Calling any Indie music fan...
There are few long stories told about this band. It is a must for fans.
If you are not a fan, but a music fan, it also talks about the way Indie music has changed as a result of the internet, and in turn, the way anybody experiences and discovers music and bands now. Nostalgia or something lost? You decide.

Title: Celine Dion's Let's Talk About Love: A Journey to the End of Taste (33 1/3 Series)
    Author: Carl Wilson
    Narrator: Kevin Draine
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-26-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 35 votes
    Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Music
    Publisher's Summary:
Non-fans regard Celine Dion as ersatz and plastic, yet to those who love her, no one could be more real, with her impoverished childhood, her (creepy) manager-husband's struggle with cancer, her knack for howling out raw emotion. There is nothing cool about Celine Dion, and nothing clever. That is part of her appeal as an object of love or hatred - with most critics and committed music fans taking pleasure (or at least geeky solace) in their lofty contempt.
This book documents Carl Wilson's brave and unprecedented year-long quest to find his inner Celine Dion fan, and explores how we define ourselves in the light of what we call good and bad; what we love and what we hate.
    Editorial Reviews:
Carl Wilson's fascinating study of music, taste, and reputation will defy your preconceptions on music writing. First of all, Wilson loathes Celine Dion's music. But he sets out to explore why. Is musical preference personal or social? How does cultural capital and "coolness" play into our musical tastes. How can you hate music that millions of others adore?
Kevin Draine's dramatic, growling narration makes this audiobook a true gem to listen to. There's not a dull moment, and listeners will be left reconsidering the grounds for their musical tastes. Perhaps that noise your next-door neighbors blare at night has something to it!
    Critic Reviews:
"Brilliant." (Alex Ross, author of The Rest Is Noise)
"An important study - not just of Dion and pop music but also of the changing nature of criticism in the popular realm." (Bookforum)
"A book pondering the aesthetics of Celine risks going wrong in about 3,000 different ways.... Instead, this book goes very deeply right. (Sam Anderson, New York Magazine)
    Members Reviews:
    Let's Talk about Taste
Okay, first of all I used to describe Celine Dion as my "guilty pleasure" if I talked about liking her at all. I love her voice, which I fell in love with when she sang "Here, There, and Everywhere" on a George Martin tribute album. When I listened to her, which I did from time to time (taking a break from, say, the Radiohead or the Beatles), I would do so alone (and if I was on Spotify, I'd swich my session to "private" so that everyone on Facebook wouldn't know what I was listening to.
Why was I embarrassed to like Celine Dion? Carl Wilson (not the Beach Boy) explains why in this short book about aesthetics and pop culture. I have a better idea about why I do what I do, and other people like music I dont'. While I may still enjoy Celine, Barry Manilow on the private setting it is not because I am embarrassed, it is because all my friends haven't read this book.

    Publisher's Summary:
Music can move us to the heights or depths of emotion. It can persuade us to buy something, or remind us of our first date. It can lift us out of depression when nothing else can. It can get us dancing to its beat. But the power of music goes much, much further. Indeed, music occupies more areas of our brain than language does: humans are a musical species.
Oliver Sacks' compassionate, compelling tales of people struggling to adapt to different neurological conditions have fundamentally changed the way we think of our own brains, and of the human experience. In Musicophilia, he examines the powers of music through the individual experiences of patients, musicians, and everyday people. He explores how catchy tunes can subject us to hours of mental replay, and how a surprising number of people acquire nonstop musical hallucinations that assault them night and day. Yet far more frequently, music goes right: Sacks describes how music can animate people with Parkinson's disease who cannot otherwise move, give words to stroke patients who cannot otherwise speak, and calm and organize people whose memories are ravaged by Alzheimer's or amnesia.
Music is irresistible, haunting, and unforgettable, and in Musicophilia, Oliver Sacks tells us why.

Wow! Amazing! Dr. Sacks uncovers so much information on issues that many of us never knew existed! I've read some of his other books, and became a fan, right off. Unfortunately, he died just recently, and one hopes that the others who follow through with studies of the brain and neurology will have such keen insights.

    Audie Award Winner, History, 2013
If you were a fan of popular music in the 1960s and early '70s, you were a fan of the Wrecking Crew - whether you knew it or not.
On hit record after hit record, by everyone from the Byrds, the Beach Boys, and the Monkees to the Grass Roots, the 5th Dimension, Sonny & Cher, and Simon & Garfunkel, this collection of West Coast studio musicians from diverse backgrounds established themselves as the driving sound of pop music - sometimes over the objection of actual band members forced to make way for Wrecking Crew members.
Industry insider Kent Hartman tells the dramatic, definitive story of the musicians who forged a reputation throughout the business as the secret weapons behind the top recording stars. Mining invaluable interviews, the author follows the careers of such session masters as drummer Hal Blaine and keyboardist Larry Knechtel, as well as trailblazing bassist Carol Kaye, who went on to play in thousands of recording sessions. Listeners will discover the Wrecking Crew members who would forge careers in their own right, including Glen Campbell and Leon Russell, and learn of the relationship between the Crew and such legends as Phil Spector and Jimmy Webb.
Hartman also takes us inside the studio for the legendary sessions that gave us Pet Sounds, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and the rock classic Layla, which Wrecking Crew drummer Jim Gordon cowrote with Eric Clapton for Derek and the Dominos. And the author recounts priceless scenes, such as Mike Nesmith of the Monkees facing off with studio head Don Kirshner, Grass Roots lead guitarist (and future star of The Office) Creed Bratton getting fired from the group, and Michel Rubini unseating Frank Sinatra's pianist for the session in which the iconic singer improvised the hit-making ending to Strangers in the Night.
The Wrecking Crew tells the collective, behind-the-scenes stories of the artists who dominated Top-40 radio during the most exciting time in American popular culture.
    Critic Reviews:

The Wrecking Crew] has the...potent excitement of a collection of greatest hits. It makes good music sound better." (Janet Maslin,

    Juke Box Documentary
Would you listen to The Wrecking Crew again? Why?
Like many of the songs that are described in the book, The Wrecking Crew may be worth listening to again. However, I think the next step is to see the film documentary. Though it may lack the detail of the book, it would have the added benefit of including snippets of the songs and showing us the faces of the musicians who are the subject of the book.
Actually, I found that it was the songs that held this true life story together, and the author must have felt so as well, organizing the chapters by song rather than my personality.

    Publisher: University Press Audiobooks

    Publisher's Summary:
Toward a Cognitive Theory of Narrative Acts brings together in one volume cutting-edge research that turns to recent findings in cognitive and neurobiological sciences, psychology, linguistics, philosophy, and evolutionary biology, among other disciplines, to explore and understand more deeply various cultural phenomena, including art, music, literature, and film. The essays fulfilling this task for the general listener as well as the specialist are written by renowned authors H. Porter Abbott, Patrick Colm Hogan, Suzanne Keen, Herbert Lindenberger, Lisa Zunshine, Katja Mellman, Lalita Pandit Hogan, Klarina Priborkin, Javier Gutiérrez-Rexach, Ellen Spolsky, and Richard Walsh. Among the works analyzed are plays by Samuel Beckett, novels by Maxine Hong Kingston, music compositions by Igor Stravinsky, art by Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin, and films by Michael Haneke.
Each of the essays shows in a systematic, clear, and precise way how music, art, literature, and film work in and of themselves and also how they are interconnected. Finally, while each of the essays is unique in style and methodological approach, together they show the way toward a unified knowledge of artistic creativity.
    Critic Reviews:
This exciting collection attests to the range and sophistication of current cognitive-evolutionary studies in narrative. Exploring the relation between narrative and topics including empathy, dream, torture and ethics, theory of mind, and emotional change, each essay demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the secondary discipline it brings to bear on narrative art." (Nancy Easterlin, University of New Orleans)
"Focused on the universal human capacity for narrative, Frederick Aldama's Toward a Cognitive Theory of Narrative Acts boldly stakes out a common space of knowledge at the intersection of the natural and social sciences and the humanities. The essays by leading cognitive critics provide important insights into the motivations and workings of narrative from Aristotle to contemporary film." (Mary Thomas Crane, Boston College)

Who was your favorite character and why?
Lots of really excellent essays in this collection. I like Suzanne Keen's essay, that is the one I am listing to now. Lisa Zunshine and Patrick Colm Hogan have good chapters also. The whole book is good.
What about Kellie Fitzgeralds performance did you like?
    Well-read, clear and expressive.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    Nonfiction so...
    Any additional comments?
I am a PhD student in English Literature. I specialize in cognitive narratology so I was really happy to see an audiobook on the subject. Looking at literature and narrative from the perspective of cognitive science is the next big wave. Lots of A-list universities are focusing more and more on this perspective -- Harvard has put out several dissertations lately that take a cognitive approach to literature. Much more to follow.
This is a challenging title and it would definitely help your comprehension if you already knew a little about narratology and cog-sci. I love it. I have listened to it once and I am listening to it a second time.

Dave Barry didn't know what he was letting himself in for when he invited his Legion of Alert Readers to submit their nominees in the Bad Song Survey. "Song badness," he soon learned, "is an issue that Americans care deeply about."
Now John Ritter and Arte Johnson present for you the songs that Americans love to hate. There is Gary Puckett and the Union Gap Band's "Young Girl" ("Young girl, get out of my mind, my love for you is way out of line..."), which is not to be confused with "Woman", and "This Girl Is a Woman Now" (which some readers believe to be the same song). Another strong contender is Neil Diamond's "Play Me", particularly the part where he trills, "song she sang to me, song she brang to me..." And don't forget "Candy Man", "Johnny Get Angry", "Itsy-Bitsy Teeny-Weeny Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini", "Wildfire", and the entire Barry Manilow oeuvre. This much is guaranteed: as soon as you hear even a snippet of these songs, you won't be able to get them out of your head!

Geoff Riddens smooth, fluid timbre has an appropriately musical quality as it effortlessly guides the listener on author Julian Johnsons fascinating and illuminating journey through 1,000 years of Western classical music.
Johnson isnt concerned with providing a droll, chronological history, but is instead preoccupied with, as he puts it, "what music has meant to people, why it mattered at the time, and why it still matters now" in this engrossing and enriching listen.
