    Title: Sufferings in Africa
    Author: James Riley
    Narrator: Brian Emerson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-12-05
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 56 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
This dramatic account of Captain Riley's trials and sufferings sold more that one million copies in his day and was even read by a young and impressionable Abraham Lincoln. The degradations of a slave existence and the courage to survive under the most harrowing conditions have rarely been recorded with such painful honesty.
Sufferings in Africa is a classic travel-adventure narrative and a fascinating testament of white Americans enslaved abroad, during a time when slavery flourished throughout the United States.
    Critic Reviews:
"Reader Brian Emerson is monotonous and cool, punctuating sentences by prolonging the last word and dropping his voice. The didactic, well-pronounced delivery...makes the history seem plausible." (AudioFile)

    19th century shipwreck saga
This is a harrowing and amazing account by a New England ship captain of his crew's shipwreck off northern Africa in the early 1800s. His writing is vivid and comprehensive, describing their treatment, and the lifestyle of their captors, and how his own wits and faith saved most of his crew. It is quite grueling, but worthwhile and it all ends well, thankfully. I kept wondering how many Americans had died overseas in similar circumstances, those who had not been able to talk their way to freedom? The narration is good, as well.
May be a great book, BUT...
I tried two or three times to listen to this book, partly because I saw the story on TV and it was utterly captivating. However, the narrator has such a strange oral delivery that I found it impossible to concentrate sufficiently and get into the story. He has a nice sonorous voice, but he doesn't seem to put the proper tones and intonations at the right places in the sentence. It is hard to explain, but you might want to listen to the preview first before buying.
    an absolute must listen to
This is an incredible story! The author was capable enough to be able to tell us all that happened to him in such a way that after you finish, you feel (for better or worse) that it was actually you that had the experiences. I was captivated all the way through the book.
A must read for history enthusiasts
This is a interesting and factual recount of witnessed history. A book now 200 years old that gives us an account of a culture that is long past and The roots of a culture the west currently grapples with. It is a must read for anybody interested in today's east west conflicts and honest real history.
    Treasure of a story
If you could sum up Sufferings in Africa in three words, what would they be?
    Unrelenting survival
    Any additional comments?
Great story, I couldn't believe I had never heard of this story before. Very vivid descriptions of the Arab culture as well. I recommend this book.

  • Unraveled Audiobook by Maria Housden

    Title: Unraveled
Subtitle: The True Story of a Woman Who Dared to Become a Different Kind of Mother
    Author: Maria Housden
    Narrator: Staci Snell
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 6 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-07-05
    Publisher: Books on Tape
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 17 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Unraveled is Housden's riveting and thoughtful story of how, after the death of her young daughter, she found the courage to break away from her role as a wife and stay-at-home mom and strike out on her own in search of a more fulfilling life. Leaving her three surviving children in the primary custody of her husband, Housden faced down the disbelief of friends and family and began a journey that would ultimately lead her not only to the truth about herself, but also to a deeper and more loving connection with her children.
Housden writes about the emotional reckoning that led to her decision and the ways in which she has become the best mother she can be while no longer living with her children full-time. With fierce honesty and the same gift for poignantly beautiful writing that she demonstrated in the best-selling Hannah's Gift, Housden makes a valuable contribution to our collective conversation about mothering, marriage, and the assumptions we make about the way life is supposed to be. Unraveled is the remarkable story of one woman's choice not to live every girl's dream...and instead to find her own.
    Critic Reviews:
"Housden's poignant, raw book has no easy answers for life's difficult moments, but her bravery will soothe those enduring similar trials." (Publishers Weekly)

    Thought-Provoking
While this story didn't "play out" exactly as I had expected, Maria's story is full of thought-provoking ideas about finally stepping out into one's own life. You may not agree with or even like everything this woman did in her own life, but her story will make you think "out of the box" about what we each much ultimately decide for ourselves.
    So, who am I?
I was deeply touched by this story. We all have stories but this one touched me deeply. I know that at some time in the future I will listen to it again.
The reader was so sensitive and gentle that she carried me along perfectly.
My life has been so different to the portrayed yet so the same.
    LOVE. LOVE. LOVE.
This book was beyond amazing. Having gone through a very similar experience, I was able to really feel her ride. This book will forever be close to my heart
Intersting Perspective, but No Female Role-Model
This book was a rare look into the emotions and reasoning of a mother who, defining social & familial norms, choose to walk away from her own children. It does have a heart-wrenching recap of the loss of her youngest daughter; however, this author already published a best-selling book exclusive to this horrible loss ("Hannah's Gift"). What remained, quite frankly was the self-told story of a woman's adultery and (in my opinion) selfish abandonment of her children in order to pursue the "artist" inside her.
Overall ... "interesting perspective, but difficult to look beyond her actions & choices--tough call"
    You've Got To Be Kidding.....
In a nutshell, for anyone who may be wrongfully misguided as to what the mysterious and unique method of parenting this author is wanting to reveal, this book is nothing more than the author's guilty feelings of abandoning her children and husband after going to a retreat to "find herself".

Forty-four million Americans fish, but no one does it quite like Mike Iaconelli. In Fishing on the Edge, he lets you in on the secrets to his extraordinary success; how he developed his "power" fishing style, how he attacks the water, positions the boat, and perseveres through those days when the bass just aren't biting. With tips that can be used by any fisherman, from using spinner baits to picking out the right rod to his no-fail "secret weapons", this is an intensive, informative, and often raucous journey through the life of a brash young man destined to do for fishing what Tony Hawk did for the X Games: take the sport to a whole new level. A tale of passion, competition, and extreme personality, Fishing on the Edge is a book for anyone who loves the sport of fishing, wants to turn a hobby into a career, or is simply fascinated by a man's unstoppable drive to succeed.

    what you would expect
This wasn't a bad book. Yet it was what you'd expect. The story of Iconelli's life is interesting but not unique enough to be considered compelling. The other problem with the book is that it seems like it was written for a high school english composition class. Ike is really fond of trying to sound hip in his writing, so if you don't want to hear the phrase "I was totally stoked.." a thousand times you had better rethink this purchase. I bought the book hoping for fishing tips. They are there, but they are the same tips found on his web page and don't amount to much taken as a whole.
With that said, I don't feel like the book is unworthy of a listen. If you like fishing this listen will be moderately worth your time. But don't expect more than Ike can deliver!
    Great Book. Worth a listen.
A good book for fans of BASS or FLW. Ike's personality shines through and makes for a quick listen. Good stories and some tips. Very entertaining.
    Great book for any Angler.
Great book. Mikes story is amazing. From the beginning on how he came into Fishing, to how he almost got out. Definitely an adventure. I felt like I was on the boat with him. Great job! You just got another fan.
    awesome book
hearing it from iaconelli himself was cool
learning how he want's to change bass tournament was different
    Didn't suck
Good story. I'd like to hear something more updated as this is a bit old. Ike is due for another book/audiobook. Fun listen. Nice and quick. Story seems a little scattered at some points but it's pretty easy to follow. Thanks for a good un, Ike!

Bring your kleenex along for this ride
This book was such a wonderful testament to Ms. Davis' father. Ms. Davis has a wonderful way of reaching into your soul and bringing out the emotions you tuck neatly away. I think I cried throughout the whole book. I related to her on every level and understood the pain she was going through (my grandmother had Alzheimer's). This book gave me new insight into the lives of Ronald and Nancy Regan and I now have a deep respect for them. A MUST READ!
    Validating, comforting and thought provoking...
I foundtoga bop to be validating, conforting and thought provoking. I was able to identify greatly with this and can't even begin to describe the many things I found we have in common.
    Finding love and life
If you could sum up The Long Goodbye in three words, what would they be?
    Insightful and Heartwarming
Who was your favorite character and why?
Patti, because she was able to express so well the truth of her own growth through a most difficult disease, Alzheimer's. This is the story of her personal relationship with her father who was inflicted with the disease and who also happened to be, arguably the most influential and beloved President of the United States in the last century!
Which character as performed by Staci Snell was your favorite?
Patti Davis, daughter of Ronald Reagan
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I cried, because it hits a personal chord for me as I care for my husband, age 65, who also has Alzheimer's Disease. We have known each other since high school and have been married 44 years. He is and always has been the love of my life and best friend!
    Any additional comments?
Alzheimer's is one of the most devastating diseases of our time! There is no cure and little hope of a cure anytime soon. Death will occur within around ten years if not sooner. While it clearly affects families dealing with the disease up close and personal, it will ultimately take its' toll on everyone as those suffering will grow from the current five million in the US alone to over 20 million worldwide by 2013.
    Boring
    It just seemes so redundant

    One of my favorites!
George Dawson spent the first 98 years of his life unable to read and signed his name with an X. He kept it a secret for years. At 98, George decided to attend Adult Education Classes to learn how to read. I didn't want to miss a single word of this sweet story because it could be a life lesson. Who wouldn't be inspired? LeVar Burton's beautiful narration was the icing on the cake. George Dawson lived to be 103 and learned to read. I found myself wondering if I could ever do the same at half that age. My only complaint is that the audio book was abridged. I hope the publishers eventually offer an unabridged version because I'd buy it too. This one is a keeper!
    everyone should read this!
What did you love best about Life is So Good?
George has so many experiences that he recalls in this book, due to his long life, he lived through much of American history. Listening to this is like having a grandparent tell you stories of when they were young, except most grandparents didn't go through so much. EVERYONE could learn from George's simple advice. Do read this, you won't regret it.
    It was so good.
What does LeVar Burton bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He was very persuasive. Because of Levar's believability, I almost thought the author was also the narrator.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    I laughed AND cried.
    Any additional comments?
It gave me a glimpse of what life was like for some people during the past years. I was amazed at the memory and the unending endurance and optimism of George Dawson. It was truly inspiring.
    Life is so good
I enjoyed this book and the tales of wandering around the US by rail. Nice, light and very enjoyable book.
    Read and reread
I purchased the book and now I have it via audible to listen over and over again. Highly recommend

    Language: English
    Release date: 01-05-01

Carter describes the other people who shaped his early life (only two of whom were white), including the boyhood friends who could not attend the same school, and the eminent black bishop who refused to come to the back door but would stand in the front yard discussing crops and politics with Jimmy's father.
Carter evokes a time when the cycles of life were predictable and simple while the rules were heartbreaking and complex. An Hour Before Daylight is a sensitive portrait of an era that shaped the nation.
    Critic Reviews:
    "Candid...an inspirational story." (AudioFile)
    Members Reviews:
A rare view of rural America
Biography is not my usual choice, but this one is very engaging. Through close examination of his childhood, Jimmy Carter offers rare insight into the social relationships in a poor, southern farming community of the early 20th century. His deliberate and colorful narration paints a beautiful portrait of a uniquely American way of life. He presents thought provoking observations of the relationships between black and white Americans with open honesty. This book has substance and exciting imagery. Jimmy reads with a steady, strolling pace and deep sincerity that is quite a treat.
    An Hour Before Daylight
Wonderful account of how a country boy grew up to be a high achiever. The author and narrator is able to relate his story extremely well and it is fascinating. You learn a great deal about Mr. Carter's upbringing as well as about agriculture and life in the rural southern USA in the early 20th century. The relationship of Mr. Carter to his father and his subsequent development of a powerful work ethic is memorable.
Captures an era now all but gone
As a student of the American South I found this book wonderful. Just listening to Mr Carter's gentle narration makes me feel that if there are really people like him then all will be right with the world someday. To also hear what, as a little boy, influenced his ideals, beliefs, and formation of character gave me insight into the man I admire, and the Southern culture in another time. He writes so well, sharing small moments and large, and many of his descriptions of working and playing barefooted on the farm with his friends have stayed with me warmly and richly. This memoir captures an era that is gone, and a generation that is nearly gone. It is a sweet and dear book and very worthwhile.
    Wonderful Story of Simpler Times
A wonderful telling of a time when life was harder, but you appreciated what you had and experienced. Where family, friends, neighbors, and acquaintances are treated and regarded as siblings. A lost time where everyone looked out for and took care of each other - not out of necessity, but because it was the right thing to do. This type of lifestyle is quickly dissappearing, even in our smaller towns, and the country is growing poorer by the minute beacuse of it.
    a book worth reading
liked hearing about his family and the relationship they had with the black community in the south, in the historical content.

Ricky was amazing reading this book. he is such an amazing person and I love him. ride on rickyyy i hope for a second bookkkk
    Good for existing fans
Follow Me is a good book for people who are already familiar with Ricky through his YouTube videos and social media presence and who want to know more about him. However, the book really isn't a pure autobiography. Ricky presents his story in pieces as part of a larger theme of motivating young people to try new things, be more creative, live healthy, and generally have a positive outlook on life. It succeeds at that but you won't get much information on the business and behind the scenes aspects of social media success.

In this book, author and biologist Marcy Houle shares her personal journey of caring for her father, a surgeon, who developed Alzheimer's disease, and later her mother, who succumbed to other medical conditions.
Like many children of aging parents, Marcy often felt powerless traveling this sad trajectory - watching them fall through the cracks of a fragmented and confusing healthcare system, where professionals often wrote off their symptoms as "just old age". The tragic secret? According to coauthor and geriatrics physician Elizabeth Eckstrom, these symptoms frequently are not "just old age". Rather, the problem is that the current healthcare delivery model for older people is ill-equipped to provide the comprehensive, person-centered care seniors need. Today, thousands of aging people face unnecessary suffering, hospitalizations, nursing home stays, and even death due to complications that could have been prevented or treated.
The Gift of Caring reveals these pitfalls and provides families with tools they can use to avoid them. Dr. Eckstrom shares professional medical insights into what Marcy could have done to safeguard her parents, and shows how we can become our loved one's best advocate.

In this deeply personal book, the celebrated Haitian-American writer Edwidge Danticat reflects on art and exile. Inspired by Albert Camus and adapted from her own lectures for Princeton Universitys Toni Morrison Lecture Series, here Danticat tells stories of artists who create despite (or because of) the horrors that drove them from their homelands. Combining memoir and essay, these moving and eloquent pieces examine what it means to be an artist from a country in crisis.

The Narrator Does Not Do This Justice
What did you love best about Create Dangerously?
Really beautiful essays. Danticat is a wonderful author.
Would you be willing to try another one of Kristin Kalblis performances?
No! She reads every sentence with the exact same intonation and lilt in her voice, she sounds like a machine, like Siri.
    Painful audio, disservice to story
Would you listen to Create Dangerously again? Why?
Definitely, I would listen to it if someone else read it. I enjoy Danticat's work, but listening to this reader is like listening to the computer voice on my GPS read a story (sorry Ms. Kalbli).
What did you like best about this story?
The story itself and Danticat's manner of telling it.
Would you be willing to try another one of Kristin Kalblis performances?
No. I'm sorry, it's like listening to my GPS read me a story. Too little variation in tone for such an important story.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. I like to listen in 1 hour segments.
    Any additional comments?
I feel badly for the reader of the story, but after several listening attempts, the reader's voice was so monotone I actually had to turn my iPod off as I couldn't stand the reading voice.
A Very Sobering Reflection On Art
This collection of essays really provided an interesting take on the role of art, how it effects society, and it's importance in times of crisis. When people talk about the crucial role art has in times of collective hardship and grief, I believe it, but with limited evidence. What Edwidge Danticat manages to doin an incredibly non-confrontational, yet entirely convincing manneris make a case for this importance. She manages to show real instances that art serves its function to help us process difficult situations like immigration, domestic disputes, or even national emergencies. It is masterfully written.
    Create Dangerously
The story is both captivating and informational as a nonfiction work. I found the narration particularly compatible with the tone of the book and it was pleasing to listen to while easy to follow.

Tout a commencé à ses 22 ans, lorsqu'elle reçoit un appel de Chine, qui va la transformer.
