    Title: Take on the Street
Subtitle: What Wall Street and Corporate America Don't Want You to Know
    Author: Arthur Levitt, Paula Dwyer
    Narrator: Scott Brick
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 2 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-05-04
    Publisher: Books on Tape
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 57 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Arthur Levitt was the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. For years, he attempted to regulate accounting firms, corporate reporting, and brokerages, but the political cost was so high that he had to resign. Now, as a free agent, he goes to bat for the common investor and tells it like it is. He tells us how investors today are being fed lies and distortions. Wall Street's obsession with short-term performance has resulted in a culture of gamesmanship among corporate managers, financial analysts, brokers, and fund managers. Levitt details the conflicts of interest, the tradition of mutual manipulation between companies and analysts, and the shading of information to fudge statistics and control investor behavior. And then he offers sound advice on how to avoid these perils.

    Critic Reviews:
"Should be mandatory...for anyone with a dollar invested in the stock market." (Publishers Weekly)
"Lively and illuminating....Blends backroom revelations of a first-rate political memoir with the no-nonsense advice of a basic investment primer." (The New York Times)
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent eye opener
This book is a must hear/read for business leaders, investors, accountants, business students and particularly board directors of any company. The author has carefully written this book to target the widest audience possible...it can be boring for finance professionals in some parts, but the value in most of it is intellectually stimulating even for the pros.
Someone Looking out for the Individual Investor
Mr. Levitt presents a compelling behind-the-scenes account of his efforts to advocate for the Individual Investor. The fact that he was often forced to compromise this goal, due to politcial pressure, is shocking.
Interesting Info but very slow and dry
I can't recommend this book although the information is interesting if your interested in investing and financial markets but the tone and pace make it hard to listen to.
    Expected more...
I expected more from this book. It tell you about all those things you hear in the media all the time and you can do nothing about anyway (with very few exceptions).
Good info but narration is distracting
The content is very good, when I can get past the narration. I'm sure the narrator had the best intentions but, to me, it was non-fiction with "an attitude."

  • When Genius Failed Audiobook by Roger Lowenstein

    Title: When Genius Failed
Subtitle: The Rise and Fall of Long-Term Capital Management
    Author: Roger Lowenstein
    Narrator: Roger Lowenstein
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 16 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-27-01
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 1286 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
Meriwether & Co. truly believed that their finely tuned computer models had tamed the genie of risk, and would allow them to bet on the future with near mathematical certainty. Thanks to their cast - which included a pair of future Nobel Prize winners - investors believed them. Four years later, when a default in Russia set off a global storm that Long-Term's models hadn't anticipated, its supposedly safe portfolios imploded. In five weeks, the professors went from mega-rich geniuses to discredited failures. The firm's staggering $100 billion balance sheet threatened to drag down markets around the world. At the eleventh hour, fearing that the financial system of the world was in peril, the Federal Reserve hastily summoned Wall Street's leading banks to underwrite a bailout.
Best selling author Roger Lowenstein captures Long-Term's roller-coaster ride in gripping detail. Drawing on confidential internal memos and interviews with dozens of key players, Lowenstein crafts a story that reads like a first-rate thriller from beginning to end. He explains not just how the fund made and lost its money, but what it was about the personalities of Long-Term's partners, the arrogance of their mathematical certainties, and the late-90s culture of Wall Street that made it all possible.
    Critic Reviews:
"This book is story-telling journalism at its best." (The Economist)
"Lowenstein [is] one of the best financial journalists there is¿" (New York Times Book Review)
    Members Reviews:
Informative and interesting, full of suspense
I read this book with the aim of increasing my knowledge about the stock market and various terminologies etc. I did'nt want to read some dull boring book. My way of getting the hang of things when I am *very* new in a field is to listen (or read) on topics related to that field. Knowingly or unknowingly, you start to pick up terms that you had never heard of.
This Book was a very interesting reading all by itself. Many people are drawn towards the stock markets (or success in general) without understanding that success now can be followed by failure. That is the entire essence about being careful and playing safe. Risk management in short.
This book teaches how to be not blinded by present success blah blah blah. its a very interesting book. Informative and full of suspense. It surely teaches somethings. Besides risk management it teaches the value of experience and the concept of rising back from your fall. Many people just accept one defeat as their entire life. There is a lot that can be learnt from this book. Very interesting.
    When Genius Failed
I could not listen for more than 30 minutes. The book may be good but I could not stand the narration. I suggest you listen to a sample before purchasing. Listen for a while to get a good sense of the narrator's style.
    Great book poorly read
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
It is a clear exposition of the catastrophic failure of Long Term Capital and the hubris of its most important partners.

  • Free Agent Nation Audiobook by Daniel H. Pink

    Title: Free Agent Nation
Subtitle: How America's New Independent Workers Are Transforming the Way We Live
    Author: Daniel H. Pink
    Narrator: Daniel H. Pink
    Format: Abridged
    Length: 3 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-10-01
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 116 votes
    Genres: Business, Commerce & Economy
    Publisher's Summary:
In this landmark book, Daniel H. Pink offers the definitive account of this revolution in work. He shows who these free agents are - from the marketing consultant down the street to the home-based "mompreneur" to the footloose technology contractor - and why they've forged a new path. His entertaining and provocative account of the new frontier of work reveals how free agents are shaking up all of our institutions - from politics to education to the family.
Hip and hopeful, meticulously researched and joyously iconoclastic, Free Agent Nation will change your thinking - and maybe even change your life.
    Members Reviews:
    Not what I expected
I was expecting a book detailing on how to transition to a free agent. This book examines the overall shift to free agents on a macro level. The author is a former speechwriter for Al Gore and Robt Reich(sp?) from the Dept of Labor. The book was published in 2001 at the height of the dot com/the internet will save the world boom and some of the references are out of date. While I agree with the author that for many in corporate life a logical transition at mid to late career is to shift to free agent status, I was hoping for some pracile advice and examples of success and failure. Would have made an interesting magazine article.
Critical for parents with children in public ed.
What made the experience of listening to Free Agent Nation the most enjoyable?
This was so chock full of research and thoughtfully presented ideas about the world of work today and tomorrow, and education. I can't stop thinking about this book, especially as it relates to my young girls' future lives and education in public school.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Free Agent Nation?
The end of the book, I think the last few chapters, that touched on public education and 'Alumni Networks' of companies.
What does Daniel H. Pink bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Cadence, personality, emphasis where he would have it.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No way. This is a book I stretched out over days, and often reversed in order to really make sure I had a firm grasp of what Daniel was teaching me. I want to listen to it again, and have been telling everyone I know to read this book as well as A Whole New Mind.
    Any additional comments?
    I absolutely love Audio Books.
I'm not alone in the world!
Would you listen to Free Agent Nation again? Why?
Yes, I would. It's inspirational to know that I'm part of an overall trend.
What did you like best about this story?
It inspired me to take the trouble to find a local community of Free Agents to connect with so I can find solutions to the unique problems Free Agents face. It's easy to find
What about Daniel H. Pinks performance did you like?
I love when an author reads his own books. You really hear the conviction in their voice about their subject, which is hard for an actor to reproduce.
    Mandatory freelancer read
If you're an independent professional or considering becoming one - particularly in the US - this book will interest you.
