Save your money for a good harness

I was very disappointed by the lack of useful information in this book. Nothing was presented that you couldn't find with a simple key word search of the internet. I had hoped for useful suggestions, interesting insight, maybe some tips for making the experience more enjoyable. Instead it read like a glossary of the toys. If you already know what hardware there is available this book won't be much help. It didn't even have suggestions about which toy might be superior for which purpose. I was hoping for a more comprehensive treatment of the act and how it could enhance the bond between my lover and myself. This book was more like an quick overview stretched out for 100 pages. There was great potential in this often unexplored topic but the book decided not to delve into it.

It's good but not...quite...great

Karlyn Lotney, aka Fairy Butch, has deployed hir extensive experience as a columnist to write this book. I decided to buy the book after spending a weekend reading Fairy Butch archives on [...] Sadly, the book didn't go far beyond what I had already read, much of it is reproduced verbatim from hir column. For those of you out there low on cash, I recommend reading hir column archives and forgetting this book.

That said, if you aren't low on cash or want a handy reference without having to read multiple screens worth of information it's quite lovely. Illustrations would be useful, though, especially in the discussion of positions, a discussion that I think there could be more of! The main thing I took away from this book was to relax, go for it, don't worry, it'll be excellent. And it was excellent, so it seems to have done its job!

Fairy Butch has a witty and generous approach to sex education that takes the stigma out of learning new things. First, the book humourously orients you to the basics, thoroughly covering myths, anatomy, tools of the trade, and care of those tools.

I found the ensuing chapters to be extremely inventive; they included loads of tips, and deviant concepts to interest even the seasoned strapper. Chapters on sexual imagination and communication round this book out as more than just an in and out 'how to' manual

I liked that Fairy Butch spoke to an audience of all genders and orientations (I was quite tittilated reading handy hints for heterosexual strappers). The book really gave me a great sense of community, which, in this society, is priceless.

The Ultimate guide to Strap on Sex is nearly 200 pages long. It's sexy, fun, and a great read - I couldn't put it down (in fact, I ploughed right through it).

Dear me, I think I might be gushing...

I'm a bit of a sex nerd; consequently I read a lot of instruction manuals.

The one set of instructions men MUST read! And women too ...

Like most men, I don't read instructions, don't look at maps, and turn off the Sat Nav because, hey, I know best. But guys, if you've ever wanted to know the answers to What Women Really Want In Bed (or wherever - the author has plenty of alternatives for you ...)then buy this book, actually read it (and the bonus is: it's a very sexy read)then surprise and delight your partner with new-found skills, ideas, and sensitivities she'll adore. Then- just when she starts to suspect you've been playing away ("I mean, come on - where did you learn to do that?!?") you can produce Jo Hemmings' (by now well-thumbed ...) book. And better still, get your partner to read it too, then look forward to further developments ... Because the author seems to stand alone in her field in her understanding of what makes both sexes tick, and that's what makes it five-star special. Written with warmth, wit, and confidence, it's both a fearless account of what to actually do (plus where, when, why, and how!) and a deeply insightful revelation of just why sex is so important to us. Especially Great Sex. Truly liberating - a Great Book!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Non-fiction anthologies tend to include some strong entries and others that are not so compelling or well-written. There's more good than bad in Best Sex Writing 2010.

What did you like best about this story?

For the most part, the essays are well-structured, covering topics of interest to people who identify as sex positive. This book might prove a challenge for social conservatives and anti-porn feminists.

Which character as performed by Tara Tyler was your favorite?

No characters, per se, but the narrator seemed interested in the words she was reading, which I always appreciate.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

As the book encompasses works by many writers, listening in bits and pieces while driving or doing chores may be a good approach.

Any additional comments?

The sex positive perspective permeates this book, with no representation from opponents of, for example, gay marriage or open relationships. It is not a dialogue, but a monologue. However, as conservative beliefs on sexuality are very well represented in the media, it is interesting to be able to hang out with the other side for a few hours.

Susie Bright rocks my world

Susie writes some charming stories in this book. My favorite line from Mommy's Little Girl comes after Susie's daughter writes on her bedroom wall: Mommy is a pig! To which Susie gushes: My baby is expressing herself!

I'm just amazed at Susie's common sense & positive approach to parenting & sex in this collection of essays. My favorite piece of her work is in here, "The Best She Ever Had", and I have a new favorite called, I think, "The Farmer in the Dell". It's just so refreshing to hear someone who's written so boldly about sex admit that it's hard for her to get laid while on book tour, and then write the steamy story of sexing the farmer after cancelling her media schedule for the day.

I always feel so happy reading Susie's work - when I'm not riled up by the political injustices she also writes about - and her work is always entertaining & thought provoking. Another story she wrote about a friend who planned her death has stayed with me a month after finishing this book. I couldn't believe someone with such a full life could plan out her death & make it happen herself . . . but I have to admit I was awed by her courage & certainty & class.

So really what I love most about Susie's writing is her honesty, whether she's talking about sex, parenting, or death. She's always real & open, no matter the topic & no matter her audience. I loved this book!

The title says it all, Better world books is one of the better ones out there.

The Genuine Article

Susie Bright, author of "On Sex, Motherhood, and Porn & Cherry Pie" has been called a genius, goddess, sorceress and a damned fine writer! This may all be true. but this book, a collection of her writings is fairly uneven. She is a great writer, but not all of the articles are worthy of this book.

Susie is apparently a well known ranking connoisseur of sex, porn, and physical expression. This is the first book of hers that I have read. She is quite entertaining, not at all disturbing or too sexually advanced. She is a writer of sexual overtones, telling us that whatever we enjoy is ok.

This novel was written over 12 years of her daughter Aretha's life. The first chapter is about Aretha and her reaction to her mother's job- writing about sex. They are excellent sand spell out the shame and then joy Aretha feels about her mom's choices.

The next five chapters titled "Who wants to be a sex guru?" are not as well done.
