Excellent Book

What did you love best about Rediscovering God in America?

This book provides interesting historical information and insight about our country. The authors demonstrate the importance of God in our founding government and its famous buildings. I recommend this book to anyone interested in history of our country, the founder's intentions and the importance of God in our society.

Fascinating social history

What did you love best about Oneida?

This is a fascinating social history of the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries. The stsory weaves together religious innovations, utopian experiments, labor and industry history. Not a dull moment. And the reader gives an outstanding performance.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Oneida?

The description of the marital arrangements with its attempt to wipe out all exclusive personal attachments. This is the most eccentric but engrossing part of the story.

Which scene was your favorite?

No particualrly favorite scene, but I chose this book because I needed to use some credits. I was surprised by how good it is.

Any additional comments?

This recording is what a recorded book should be, a well written, informative, entertaining story perfectly read by the narrator.

Narration was annoying

Seemed like the writer had a per word contract. Although at times, very vivid, there were far too many words used to get a point across.

A fascinating story but, because of the performance, I longed for the story to end, but could only stand to have it read about an hour at a time. The male/female voice inflection was overdone. A great walk through history during the Industrial Age of the US.

Time Well Spent

Especially in light of the "Burning", this book serves an important purpose in its encyclopedic account of the history of Oneida, which is at times incompatible with crisp story telling. By the end, the reader will feel rewarded for granting the author this indulgence. Most 21st century Americans lack sufficient appreciation for the explosion of free thinking and radical experimentation occasioned by our liberation from the English monarchy. This book will cure that deficiency.

Yes, and no

I am somewhat disappointed in this third installment of "With Musket & Tomahawk". The other two books in the series were very captivating and informative, bringing history to life in a dramatic way. But this one was a let down. It lacked the intensity of the other books. I still will recommend it if you already have the first two books.

History in a Personal Way

Loved this collection of stories about the heroism of immigrant soldiers during the Civil War! These men all did things in the moment and sometimes over the course of the war that were truly incredible to understand. In this listen, you get to know the birthplace of each man as well as when/how they came to the US to fight in the war. Les Rolston also tries to give you the history of each man after the war, if they got married, how many children they had, when they received their medal of honor, and when they were awarded a pension (if they were ever granted one).

This book helped me to understand on a personal level the cost of war. Most of these men (and some just barely teen boys) went into the military as strong, healthy soldiers and many would never get over the wounds they received during this time. To understand, if even cursorily, the struggles they had in overcoming their wounds and then to provide for families at a time when it was solely up to the men in the family to do so tells you what honorable men these were. Most of them lived well into the 20th century and were treated poorly upon requesting their pension when their war wounds finally made it impossible for them to earn a living. It took much effort to request and prove their valor and then still more effort to actually obtain the pension. This wasn't the point of this book but it was glaring in each recounting for each soldier. We have always asked the most of our soldiers and then given them the least when they come home again.

Kevin Charles has a perfect voice for the recitation of this information and he was a pleasure to listen to throughout each soldier's story.

FINALLY THE TRUTH!

Best explanation of the JFK murder to date. A must read for those interested in the truth.

Wonderful, concise, and honest.

Horne has distilled much of his advanced knowledge of JFK and his battles with the national security state in various essays that chronicle JFK's vision to reform the nation and the dark forces that lurk just beneath our fragile and artificially created mainstream culture which hint that our country is not the bastion of democratic ideals that many believe, but that a militaristic deep state, embedded during WWII, has not only remained and grown into a Leviathan, but continues to retain a disturbing influence on all parts of life in our country. The study of JFK is crucial to becoming literate in the true nature of power, and wary of the illusions that to this day prevent Americans from being the true owners of their nation. The deceptions fed to us by our corporate fascist state are now so bold and prevalent and painfully obvious that one wonders if we are just too habituated to accepting lies as we sit like boiling frogs as a once great Republic is held captive by nefarious forces until it is a mockery of what it was once envisioned as, a country of the people, by the people, for the people. Let us pray that our true potential, as individuals, and as a nation, can be restored. Wonderful book that helps show one man' s courageous attempts to do just that. To see JFK as a dream that was robbed from us, is too see the truth and errors of our history, that we might be able to embrace truth and forge a path forward instead of cowering in fear or ignorance.

Pairs well with history books on the full story

This is, of course, marketing at its biggest popular level. It goes ever-so-well with some background in the actual policies being implemented, and the way the situations actually played out. As mostly a speaker by trade, and an amateur history buff, I delight in these live, original performances, in the theater of history unfolding.

Not exactly about the General and the Genius

As a Title The General and Genius suggests that this book will explore the relationship between the general in charge of the Manhattan Project and the scientist who led the technical team in developing the atom bomb. There was a relationship between the two men but not one of mutual collaboration or friendship beyond the fact that General Groves was in charge and Robert Oppenheimer led the scientific team at Los Alamos. This was not a story about an unlikely partnership. The story is more about the work that went on at Los Alamos from that perspective and with other projects, teams, and General Groves on the periphery. You learn something about Leslie Groves - that he was strictly military and felt that the team at Los Alamos should be under military rule. He felt that without him the scientists would play at experiments, chew the fat around the water cooler, have two hour lunches, and go home at 3. You don't learn all that much about Oppenheimer; he grew up on Riverside Drive, was very skinny, he smoked a lot, he was a scientist, was generally well liked and respected, and got thrown under the bus after the war while Groves more or less watched. That aside you do learn a lot about what it was like to work at Los Alamos for the 2 to 3 years before the bomb was finished, and you do get a good grounding on some of the technical details, obstacles, and challenges. Only at the very end is the question of the use of the bomb in war and controlling it explored and then it becomes fascinating.

This book is not fiction and so the needs of the narration do not require much in the way of accents, change of gender, or drama.

Just goes to show you that God loves everyone.

It's beautiful how God shows his love for us, not caring about your skin color, your nationality, or weather your rich, middle class or poor. He loves you because he created us, and die for us. We show also give a helping hands to those in needs just like Clara. B. There is a well insight in this story about caring, loving, our neighbors and those in need. Just go out there and show people that there is still others Clara Barton out there, that they are not alone, God is there and he sends his children's to help those in need regardless who you are.

Provocative

Sedgwick has written a parallel biography of two prominent figures from the Federalist era whose lives came together on the dueling ground. I have always been interested in Alexander Hamilton and have read most of the biographies about him. Hamilton was the chief aide to George Washington during the American Revolution and author of most of the Federalist Papers. He was the first secretary of the Treasury. Aaron Burr was a prominent attorney and was Vice President under Thomas Jefferson. I found it most interesting to be able to compare the two mens lives side by side; I feel as if I have a better understanding of the two men.

Sedgwick goes into the emotional and psychological makeup of the pair. The author presents evenhanded and insightful profiles of the two men. He states that Hamilton was hyperactive and produced volumes of work and had an intense devotion to the Federalist cause. Burr was a brooding and libidinous and tended to communicate in code. Sedgwick states he was inspired by Gore Vidals novel Burr (1973). The book is well written and meticulously researched. Sedgwick is a great storyteller therefore the book reads almost like a novel.

Sedgwick wrote about his own famous family in his book In My Blood (2007) from the revolutionary era of Theodore Sedgwick to modern day actress Kyra Sedgwick. P. J. Ochlan did a good job narrating the book. The book is fairly long at about 18 hours.

History comes alive!

Call Bo I knew a lot about the duel didn't know a lot about the events that ran up to it nor did I know what happened to Burr after the death of Hamilton so I really appreciated this in depth well researched history.
