    Narrator: John Daido Loori Roshi
    Format: Original Recording
    Length: 48 mins

    Publisher: Dharma Communications

Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Buddhism & Eastern Religions
    Publisher's Summary:
Our ordinary point of view divides the world in two. Me and you, right and wrong, success and failure, life and death, practically all of our daily encounters are about divisions. We separate ourselves from the world around us, and this separation is the cause of our pain and suffering. In order to be free and live joyfully, we need to be able to transcend these categories and emerge into a fresh point of view. Meditation allows us to get to the place where these divisions merge, and this experience changes our definition of who we are and how we experience the world. This new point of view clears away the obstructions in our lives and allows us to live with grace and harmony.
Zen Buddhism emphasizes zazen, or seated meditation, as the means to study the self and understand who we truly are. Dharma talks are an essential aspect of Zen training and take place in the context of zazen. Said to be "dark to the mind and radiant to the heart", a dharma talk is one of the ways in which a teacher points directly to the heart of the teachings of the Buddha. In our meditation practice, it is easy to get lost in self-doubt, fantasy, numbness, and emotional agitation. Dharma talks help to ground our practice, providing inspiration and an essential recognition of exactly where we find ourselves, so that we can learn to face difficulties and obstacles with a free and flexible mind. This talk was given at Zen Mountain Monastery or the Zen Center of New York City of the Mountains and Rivers Order of Zen Buddhism, founded in 1980 by the late American Zen Master John Daido Loori, Roshi (1931-2009).

What does it mean to start fresh? If we want to make a new start, the first step is to open our eyes and see what we have created with our actions, speech, and thoughts. We need to take responsibility for what we have created with our lives, then we can let go and truly begin anew. It's helpful to follow this fresh start with a vow, a pledge that will ground us and give us direction. Letting go of the old and setting a direction for the future allows to go forward with joy, hope, and determination.

    Publisher's Summary:
The 21st century is a critical time for our environment. Global warming, pollution, deforestation: the problems are large, and it's easy to feel helpless. Yet it's important not to get lost in despair; we can be serious about environmental problems and still be joyful. This ability is crucial not only for dealing with the environment, but also with spiritual practice. The earth's crisis is a physical manifestation of the crisis within us; if we don't see the one, we won't see the other. We can address the crisis within ourselves by awakening to the earth as a living being with a mystical reality, a living being that can show us how to deal with ignorance and delusion. If we let it, the earth will help us heal ourselves, which in turn allows us to heal the earth.

    Publisher's Summary:
Everyone has experienced life's classic dilemmas: Should I do this, or should I do that? Should I buy this, or should I buy that? Should I be here, or should I be there? We tend to resolve these questions by analysis and rationality, but when we look carefully we see that our choices usually aren't rational; more often they are a decision of the heart. It's essential that we cultivate the intuitive aspect of our consciousness so see beyond just two sides of a question. We separate the world into ourselves and everything outside ourselves, and this creates a false prison we don't know how to escape. By allowing ourselves to be spontaneous and intuitive, we can be present in the current moment, and this gives us the capacity to nourish the world around us.

Not about Aron Ralston's survival story.
What did you like best about Between a Rock and a Hard Place? What did you like least?
The spoken tone of the speaker was soothing, I found it enlighting and at times very funny.
What I liked the least was the fact that the story was not about Aron Ralston's survival story.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    Publisher's Summary:
Our world is full of words, whether we are listening to others, watching T.V., or talking to ourselves. In a religion like Zen Buddhism, where so much emphasis is placed on silence and meditation, what is the place of words and literature? Zen practice doesn't mean abandoning language, but rather using it to our advantage. The truth isn't found in either words or silence; it encompasses both. Meditation is an essential tool for arriving at this place of truth, teaching us to come home to the present moment and helping us realize our innate wisdom and kindness.

    Publisher's Summary:
Many of us are haunted by the past. We try to make painful memories go away by numbing ourselves with food, alcohol, and entertainment, but the past is still there and it's still eating away at us. Ironically, our obsessive thoughts about the past occur because we haven't fully processed it yet. We need to go back to the root, to clean out the dusty corners that keep us from truly being ourselves and truly being free. This process takes a great deal of honesty and patience, but the results will allow us to see the world with fresh eyes. If you can come home to the present moment's cup of tea, you can come home to everything; when we let go of yesterday's matter, there is only the great matter of right now.

    words of wisdom?
The Sample is almost entirely an excerpt of the Dalai Lama's History. Near the end only one example of his actualy words of wisdom is read by the narrator and it was difficult to tell where the history ended and the quotes began until the narrator was halfway through the one and only quote you hear. The tone is monotonous. I would have preferred hearing the words from the Dalai Lama himself.
    Very poor pronunciation
I was interested in purchasing this book, however, after hearing the sample and found the narrators inability for pronunciation I decided better of it.

I've had the cassette tapes for years, which I think are one of the best meditation tapes I've heard, and I wanted the CD format. Although the bonus music track is an added plus, the content and music is different from the cassette tape version of the same title. So if you were expecting an exact translation from tape to CD, you would be mistaken. But if you haven't heard it before - it probably won't be an issue.
    Guided meditation
This type of guided meditation is best for people who like to visualize objects and vistas in their meditation. Best for people who prefer to focus on concrete things or scenes, as opposed to feelings, emotions, or vibrations.

Babe Ruth hit 704 home runs, but no one ever mentions that he struck out about 3,000 times. In our goal-oriented culture, we tend to forget that you can't hit home runs unless you strike out; we think that failure is something bad, and as a result we become afraid to take action. Daido Roshi encourages us not to be distressed by failure, and not to be delighted by success. Rather, we should accept falling as a healthy part of life, and realize that difficult circumstances offer a wealth of insight. Each of us is born with internal wisdom, and as we begin to tap into this wisdom we learn how to fall and rise with grace and dignity. By using the power of awareness to see our thoughts, our conventional idea of ourselves drops away and we find ourselves in a new relationship to the world around us. Roshi also describes how resilience is essential for spiritual practice, and how in Zen Buddhism failure is an important teaching method.

    Publisher's Summary:
You may be disappointed with your own religion. It doesn't seem to be guiding you the way you expect a belief system to do. It's possible that there's a deep-seated resentment or pain that you're experiencing because of the suffering you see around you. This may make you turn toward another belief system: Buddhism.
Western society has often equated Buddhism with peace and calmness. It's associated with practicing meditation for stress relief. It's considered to be a way to find the purpose of your life. Whatever the reason, the fact is that more and more people are exploring Buddhism as a way of life. Maybe there's something about it that tells you, "Yes, this is it...this is what can guide me in the right direction." But Buddhism is not just about letting your mind go blank and controlling your thoughts. It's a philosophy of life that teaches you about how to manage your life and relationships. It teaches compassion and about your oneness with God. In short, there are many parts to Buddhism, and this guide is meant to let you, the beginner, know about all aspects of the religion you can learn and how you can incorporate these into your life.
