Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
Nice women never wore makeup. Even the word was taboo in polite societyuntil Max Factor entered the scene. Born in Poland in 1877, Factor worked as a beautician for the Russian royal family, the Romanovs. In 1904, he fled to America, where he opened a cosmetics store in Los Angeles. Creating makeup originally for silent films, then the talkies, and, ultimately, color motion pictures, Factor designed looks for Katharine Hepburn, Rita Hayworth, Bette Davis, and countless other beauties of the day. Soon women everywhere wanted to look like their favorite glamorous stars, and Factor was there to help, bringing his innovative cosmetics to the general public.
He revolutionized the world of beauty by producing many firsts: false eyelashes, lip gloss, foundation, eye shadow, the eyebrow pencil, concealer, wand-applicator mascara, and water-resistant makeup. A true innovator, he also introduced the concept of color harmony and the celebrity-endorsed cosmetics advertising that forms the glamorous backbone of the modern industry. Max Factor was the father of modern makeup. This is his extraordinary story.
    Editorial Reviews:
Fred Basten, many of whose books have featured Hollywood and the entertainment industry, explores the biography of the "father of modern makeup". Born in Poland, Max Factor worked on first Russian and then Hollywood royalty. With the friendliness and openness of a favorite cosmetician, Samantha Worthen reads the story of a cosmetics innovator who created the looks of Romanov women as well as stars such as Pola Negri, Katharine Hepburn, Rita Hayworth, and Bette Davis. Additionally, he proved himself a great salesman and only-in-America entrepreneur by bringing that glamour to the women of Main Street.
    Critic Reviews:
Fascinating . . . you wont be able to put it down. (Glamour)
    Members Reviews:
Interesting, yet forgettable in all the good ways
What did you like best about this story?
Very interesting story about a very interesting man.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Samantha Worthen?
I would cast almost any human over Samantha Worthen, who sounds like a robot that doesn't understand how a sentence is supposed to be read for it to flow. Strange and unnecessary pauses, almost as if words were recorded independently of each other then strung together to make this recording. While this does improve over each individual chapter, the beginning of the next chapter is just as bad as the last

Title: 1912: The Year the World Discovered Antartica
    Author: Chris Turney
    Narrator: James Millar
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 47 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-14-12
    Publisher: Random House Audiobooks
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
1912 was an incredible year, marking the height of the Heroic Age of Exploration. Curiosity about Antarctica was at fever pitch, and between 1910 and 1914 five teams of intrepid explorers embarked on the greatest race of the era, to travel beyond the edges of the known world and conquer this last great frontier.
Pitted against one another were Captain Robert Falcon Scott for Britain, Roald Amundsen for Norway, Sir Douglas Mawson for Australasia, Wilhelm Filchner for Germany, and Nobu Shirase for Japan. "Conquest of the South Pole!" trumpeted the world's newspapers in March 1912. Amundsen had won. But behind all the headlines, there was a much bigger story. The exploits of these larger-than-life explorers, often narrated in their own words, thrilled and enthralled the world; the limits of our planet were pushed all the way to the South Pole and the door to Antarctica flung wide open.
Drawing on his own polar experiences, Chris Turney reveals why 1912 witnessed the dawn of a new age in our understanding of the natural world. The tales of endurance, self-sacrifice, and technological innovation that marked 1912 laid the foundation for modern scientific exploration and have continued to inspire future generations.
1912 is an awe-inspiring journey - part nail-biting adventure, part scientific history - through an ancient and fascinating land.
Includes a PDF of photographs from these Antarctic expeditions.
    Members Reviews:
More than just Scott and Amundsen
Chris Turney and his team are getting a lot of undeserved criticism for their "eco-tourism" trip to Mawson's Huts last December. This book was published before then and I was in the middle of reading it when the news of the stranding of the Akademik Shokalskiy hit the intertubes. There are determined "skeptics" who will not admit that any sort of Antarctic research is justified, but for people of reasonably open mind, troubled by the stranding of the Shokalskiy, this book just might help you understand that such research is valuable and that Turney's trip to Mawson's huts was entirely reasonable.
Every school kid knows, or at least should know something of the Amundsen/Scott race to the pole. But few children, or adults know of the Australian and Japanese expeditions that were unfolding at the same time. Three of the four expeditions were serious scientific efforts that produced a large volume of valuable data. The fourth was a sporting venture, revered for it's success, but it produced less science than any of the other expeditions.
Consequently, I find it a bit curious that modern internet geniuses censure Turney's truly scientific "tourist trip" to the Antarctic yet celebrate Amundsen's trek to the pole.
Turney is, in fact a scientist and historian.
Amundsen, smart and winter savvy, nevertheless, really was a tourist.
Henry Kissinger would give this 5 stars
Excellent book for those with an interest primarily in Antarctic exploration from a geopolitical perspective. Turner did his research from the earliest stages of exploration (during the European "age of discovery") to the present. Though the predominant consideration throughout was the goals and motives, claims and counterclaims, of nations vis a vis other nations, the human characters are not slighted.

    Fascinating From Beginning To End
    Any additional comments?
Well read and very interesting listen. My two favorite subjects, music and the other world meant that my attention was caught from beginning to end. Its funny how musicians tend to be more open to forces and unusual happenings than the average person on the street, maybe that is why they make good musicians.... Anyway, I hadn't heard of Byron Janis but something drew me to the audio book and I really enjoyed it. Highly recommended.

    Iberian narration proved challenging
I mention that as most readers of this site would be used to Western Hemisphere accents. If I paid very strict attention, I was able to follow the story, but any distraction and I had to stop and come back to the book.
As far as the storyline itself, the work had the feel of a series of podcasts. The author makes friends with local Roma in each location, explaining the situation and what's being done to improve their lot (if anything).

Title: The Man Who Changed the Way We Eat

    Narrator: Dick Hill
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 56 mins

    Release date: 05-28-12
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 21 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
In the 1950s, America was a land of overdone roast beef and canned green beans-a gastronomic wasteland. Most restaurants relied on frozen, second-rate ingredients and served bogus "Continental" cuisine. Authentic French, Italian, and Chinese foods were virtually unknown. There was no such thing as food criticism at the time, and no such thing as a restaurant critic. Cooking at home wasn't thought of as a source of pleasure. Guests didn't chat around the kitchen. Professional equipment and cookware were used only in restaurants. One man changed all that.
From the best-selling author of Alice Waters and Chez Panisse comes the first biography of the passionate gastronome and troubled genius who became the most powerful force in the history of American food - the founding father of the American food revolution.
From his first day in 1957 as the food editor of The New York Times, Craig Claiborne was going to take his readers where they had never been before. Claiborne extolled the pleasures of exotic cuisines from all around the world, and with his inspiration, restaurants of every ethnicity blossomed. So many things we take for granted now were introduced to us by Claiborne: crème fraîche, arugula, balsamic vinegar, the Cuisinart, chef's knives, even the salad spinner.
He would give Julia Child her first major book review. He brought Paul Bocuse, the Troisgros brothers, Paul Prudhomme, and Jacques Pépin to national acclaim. His $4,000 dinner for two in Paris was a front-page story in the Times and scandalized the world. And while he defended the true French nouvelle cuisine against bastardization, he also reveled in a well-made stew or a good hot dog. He made home cooks into stars: Marcella Hazan, Madhur Jaffrey, Diana Kennedy, and many others. And Claiborne made dinner an event - whether dining out, delighting your friends, or simply cooking for your family. His own dinner parties were legendary.
Claiborne was the perfect Mississippi gentleman, but his inner life was one of conflict and self-doubt. Constrained by his position to mask his sexuality, he was imprisoned in solitude, never able to find a stable and lasting love. Through Thomas McNamee's painstaking research and eloquent storytelling, The Man Who Changed the Way We Eat unfolds a history that is largely unknown and also tells the full, deep story of a great man who until now has never been truly known at all.
    Critic Reviews:
"McNamee deftly explores the glittering public life and far-reaching contributions Claiborne made to America's food culture, as well as his troubled personal life. A highly readable, well-researched narrative chronicling America's boring culinary past and the one man who altered its course forever." (Kirkus)
    Members Reviews:
Not Much Story Once Claiborne Achieves Success
Is there anything you would change about this book?
    The narrator.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The build of Craig Claiborne finding his way in life, coming up with a dream, and achieving it. Once he has it, though, the momentum is lost, Claiborne becomes a mostly still functional alcoholic, and it catches up with him. End of story. Not much there. No great payoff or life lessons learned.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Dick Hill?
    Anyone.

Title: The Story of the Streets
    Author: Mike Skinner
    Narrator: Mike Skinner
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 15 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-26-12
    Publisher: Random House AudioBooks
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 7 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
"This book is going to try and get as close as possible to the full story of what informed the noise of The Streets. Obviously that's something I should be fairly well qualified to know about, and I'm going to be as honest as the publisher's lawyers will allow."
With the 2001 release of The Streets' debut single "Has It Come to This?" the landscape of British popular music changed forever. No longer did home-grown rappers have to anxiously defer to transatlantic influences. Mike Skinner's witty, self-deprecating sagas of late-night kebab shops and skunk-fuelled Playstation sessions showed how much you could achieve simply by speaking in your own voice.
In this thoroughly modern memoir, the man the Guardian once dubbed "half Dostoevsky half Samuel Pepys" tells a freewheeling, funny and fearlessly honest tale of Birmingham and London, ecstasy and epilepsy, Twitter-fear and Spectrum joysticks, spread betting and growing up. He writes of his musical inspirations, role models and rivals, the craft of song writing, and reflects on the successes and failures of the decade-long journey of The Streets.
    Members Reviews:
    Amazing audiobook
Definitely a great audio book in which Skinner speaks of his troubles and experiences throughout The Streets.
A hard way to make an easy living
No one sounds like Mike Skinner, and as his famous timbre begins, you do find yourself thinking, a 3 minute song is fine, but will I be able to stand a whole books worth of his monotone? And then you listen to what he's saying and you know that no-one else could read it. Every sentence about his music reminds you of the music itself, as his vocals *are* the streets. His words and the way he says them, that's what made me a fan in the first place.
This is a brilliant insight into the UK music business, from a man who is intelligent, articulate, humble when necessary, interesting, and above all, incredibly normal, with a brilliant, objective view on life, served with a slice of acerbic wit.
    The Story of the Streets
Brutally honest, compelling and refreshingly free from b******t.
It's been a privilege to hear the story behind the music that has meant so much to me over the years from the man himself. Far from being a fly-by-night 'geezer', Mike Skinner is a grafter, a craftsman and an unashamed control freak.
Skinner's reading is, errrm, uncomfortable. It sounds like reading his book aloud is the last thing in the world he wants to be doing. But I get the impression he feels letting someone else narrate it instead would be an even worse option. I agree.
If you're a fan of The Streets I can't see how you would fail to get more form the music after listening to the story.
    Recommended.
    Entertaining story...Skinners voice not so...
If you can overcome Skinners voice then it's a great story. I got to the end but it was a struggle.
Mike Skinner Is possibly the most boring man to listen to in the history of the world!
