  • Jeff Buckley's Grace (33 1/3 Series) Audiobook by Daphne A. Brooks

    Title: Jeff Buckley's Grace (33 1/3 Series)
    Author: Daphne A. Brooks
    Narrator: Susan Spain
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 30 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-07-09
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 2.5 of 5 out of 10 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
With access to rare archival material, Brooks illustrates Buckley's passion for life and hunger for musical knowledge, and shows just why he was such a crucial figure in the American music scene of the 1990s.
    Editorial Reviews:
When Jeff Buckley drowned in a Tennessee slackwater channel, in 1997, at the age of 30, a generation lost one of its most soulful and erudite musical heroes. It is fitting that his album Grace should receive the royal treatment from Bloomsburys superb 33 1/3 series of album biographies. His only studio album, Grace is both an opening salvo and a goodbye whisper to a brief career in song.
Susan Spains humble voice is a perfect match for the text, written by Daphne Brooks. Brooks brings high musical knowledge and a deft appreciation for the era in which Grace was released to an essentially personal narrative of her relationship to the great album. This audiobook is a nostalgic and moving journey.

    One Star
I was really excited when I saw this hoping I would get some behind the scenes info on the actual recording of "Grace." What I received instead was a rehash on information already available and the author's own thoughts. If this is the FIRST book you read about Jeff Buckley, you may like it. Most fans have already culled all the info they can on him, so this is not for them. This book is the author listening to CD's, reading other books, watching the videos and DVD and visiting the exhibit at the R&R Hall of Fame (all of which I've done) and talking about how great they were. Not a real exposition. There were some pretty big errors too (Jeff's borrowed Tele was NOT a Mexican Standard, but an early 80's American). Sorry to be such a downer, but this is not a book for a true Buckley fan, but a casual read for someone starting out.

Ok book and well written (in parts) from a fans perspective but the writing was tiresome and laboured - it repeated information over and over and in some parts felt like the same chapter was written over several times with sections changed.
    He was a genius
A really enjoyable read which gives an unrivalled insight into one of the greatest albums of all time. This book takes you on a journey that adds another layer to an already great piece of music. A must read for all Jeff Buckley fans, and singer/guitarists alike. How To Sing And Play Guitar At The Same Time
This is the Book the Album Deserves
Each volume in this series is different, which is why the series is so powerful. There is no formula for any of these books, which is why some are stronger than others. This is a beautiful book for a beautiful album. Brooks conducts a deep analysis of each song and places each one in a larger context of Buckley's life and music history. I savored each word. I'm richer for reading it.
    Nothing New Here :(

    Nice continuation
It was a good read, but I would have preferred a much longer story. She didn't talk about Scotland or her journalism career at all. Jackie, come out with a third installment, please.:)
    Good insight into her life.
I liked the insight into Wilson's personal life. This book helped me understand some of her own writing choices. 4 Stars.

    Editorial Reviews:
World traveler Patricia Lawrence takes listeners on an "audiojourney" to explore the ecologically and socially diverse 363 square kilometer Gatineau Park, located in Chelsea, just across the Ottawa River from the Canadian capital city. Traveling on snowshoes through the February snow that blankets the grounds, Lawrence, a nature guide, and six-year-old "junior naturalist" explore the parks unique ecosystem, which includes many at-risk plants and animals. History, too, is a subject because, as the naturalist explains, "the story of Gastineau Park is a little bit like the story of Canada."

  • Antarctica Audiobook by Jonathan Scott, Angela Scott

    Title: Antarctica
    Subtitle: Exploring a Fragile Eden
    Author: Jonathan Scott, Angela Scott
    Narrator: Sarah Sherborne
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 37 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-31-08
    Publisher: Oakhill Publishing Ltd
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Travel & Adventure, Adventure & Exploration
    Publisher's Summary:
Antarctica promises man the chance to do something that he has never done before-commit to the preservation of a vast wilderness, simply because it exists.
Here Jonathan and Angela Scott tell the story of their modern day exploration of this extreme continent, a journey through the magnificent icy landscape, to explore the wildlife of this rare sanctuary, and reflect on the experiences of early explorers like Shackelton, Amundsen, Scott and Mawson, and on the relationship between man and wildlife in this remote and spectacular environment.
    Members Reviews:
Antarctica needs to be seen and not heard.
Listened to the audio book. Historic parts were good with the explorers and descriptions of the Antarctic. However, lengthy descriptions of the wildlife and exhaustive minutia may work with accompanying photos, but became boring while listening to them. May be a great coffee table book, but the audio is not a great format for this.
    Visually impressive and enormously informative
I really liked this book. After reading about five volumes on Antarctic explorers, I decided to buy a book that would allow me to (a) get a visual feel for Antarctica; (b) learn some general knowledge about this frozen continent. In both these respects the Scotts succeed admirably.
The husband-and-wife team of Jonathan and Angela Scott (both award-winning wildlife photographers) have combined three distinct skills in this volume: research; photography and drawing. Yes, they have actually taken the trouble to do their own illustrations. And not only is the quality of their sketches high, but they have not taken the easy way out: all the drawings are done by stippling - a technique which requires real patience to get right.
The main topics covered are: the discovery of Antarctica; the heroic age of Antarctic exploration; the lives of native creatures (on land, sea and air); conservation; and the continent's future both as an unclaimed territory and a bellwether of climate change. I would say that not all of the content was intriguing (I think I skipped the chapter on the Falkland Islands), but what really distinguishes this book is the sense of wonder at the natural world: indeed, the conviction that Antarctica is something to be marvelled at simply permeates every page. Thus it is the strength of the authors' fascination with their subject that really pulls you into their narrative.

It's no mistake that Chaill's business card reads "Strange Journeys, Oddly Rendered."
I love Cahill's odd stories and own all of this books.
I purchased this for a relative who also enjoyed it.
Cahill, a former editor of Outside Magazine has the distinct pleasure of traveling globally and the talent for "strangely rendering" events he witness or, more often, he took part it during his travels. The book contains multiple short stories.
Butterworms are just one of the local delicacies that Cahill's eaten.
Tim Cahill rocks! Every single story is a winner....
I can't get enough of this writer. Cahill has taken me to the far reaches of our exotic planet and explored the depths of human nature and the human condition and most of the time has me laughing out loud. Read this and you want to share passages with those around you, enough that they'll ask you to stop it. Great story teller and great primer for anyone planning adventure travel. Heck, it's great if you only dream of adventure travel. Every single Cahill book is a page turner, this one is filled with stories that last a few to several pages each, nice sized short reads when your hung up somewhere, great for cottage or camping.
Fun read. Book arrived in good

This guy is awesome. No dispute. Finding a used copy was worth the time, and everyone should read this, if they ever think of walking into the world.
    Always a good bet.
Funny, thoughtful, keeps you from getting to bed on time because you want to see what Tim gets into in the next chapter.
