    Title: Inside the Godfather
Subtitle: Never before Told Stories of James Brown by His Inner Circle
Author: Daryl Brown, Michael P. Chabries
    Narrator: Kellen Michael Malone
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-05-14
    Publisher: Waldorf Press
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
James Brown, The Godfather of Soul, may be the most misunderstood man in the last century. Confusion emerges as a consequence of the complexities in his life. His contributions toward modern music pale in comparison to the indispensable role he played in modern history. Brown lifted all races toward the ideals of equality and opportunity. Tragically, while he had the ability to calm the storms of social turmoil - his personal life was a perpetual tempest; sex, drugs, rhythm & blues.
Inside the Godfather brings together, for the first time, those from Brown's inner circle. They will correct the distortions of the past and provide for the listener a clear understanding of the brilliance and generosity that was James Brown, Mr. Dynamite. This audiobook will have you question your assumptions about politics, religion, sports, money, and the entire entertainment industry. You will see inside the man. You will never be the same.
Let us pull back the curtain. It is time to enjoy the show.

    Really Missed!
After many starts and stops, I finished this book and totally enjoyed getting the perspectives of people who spent a lot of time with the Godfather revealing different sides to him. I admit, there were some laughable moments here but sad ones as well. We all think we want to trade places with entertainers, but many have it hard. James did. Coming up in the Jim Crow south and being treated differently from the white race at that time. He still persevered and we, that loved his music, are better for it. Three of my favorite songs that I still enjoy playing today: Think, You've Got the Power and I Lost Someone.
Thanks to the contributors and Daryl for giving us a peek.
    loved and shared this...
this book and YouTube of BMW commercial have given me further great insight into the man and his connectivity to the universe. would like to have spiritual dialogue with son/author... and former band member who is currently marching band director for a southern college. many people need to hear this and also resonate with Prince situation also
    Very Informative
Finally a good book on GFOS by someone close in his circle.....
The movie to me wasn't that great so this book was needed.....
This book is terribly written. I cannot believe someone published this
This book is terribly written. I cannot believe someone published this. I could not even finish it. Don't waste your money.
    James Brown
It was interesting. It gives a lot of info about the numerous band members James had through the year. If you like biographies, I would recommend this book.

Brilliant! Johnny was right there with the boys. This is funny and touching. A great portrait of a great band during some of their greatest (and not so great) moments. This book is too hard to find, but better be on every Clash fan's reading list. Cheers Johnny.
    Two Stars
not near the insider information that the title would imply. Quick read more about Johhny Green than the clash.

If the locals ONLY ate in N Orlando, then this might be helpful, otherwise skip it
This is a very limited listing of restaurants recommended by the author in the northern area of Orlando and on Disney properties. If you're not near Winter Park, WInter Garden, or Restaurant Row, it won't be much use to you. At least I got it for free, so I'm not regretting spending my hard-earned money.

    Members Reviews:
A witty, clever gem of a book!
Would you listen to Actor. Writer. Whatever. again? Why?
Yes! I laughed out loud on the subway and had to keep going back to hear what I missed! (got some strange looks) The author weaves in cultural criticism, sociology, historycreating a context for her own story while being thoroughly entertaining.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Actor. Writer. Whatever.?
The chapter on "Notes" was particularly raw and particularly humorous. The chapter on race was intelligent and nuanced, but again, very very funny.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes.
    Any additional comments?
Will deeply resonate with anyone in the arts, but really is a book for anyone wanting to think, feel, AND laugh.
Artists will relate. Everyone will laugh.
Would you listen to Actor. Writer. Whatever. again? Why?
Yes! You feel like your funniest smartest friend is taking you into her confidence.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The main character/author was my favorite. I particulary enjoyed her willingness to laugh at herself and ability to see the humor and ridiculousness in the entertainment industry.
Have you listened to any of Mellini Kantayyas other performances before? How does this one compare?
I believe this is her first audio performance.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I laughed out loud. A lot. In front of others!
    Any additional comments?
The book and narration reminded me of the radio show "This American Life." I loved the sneak peek into the plight of Actor, Writer, Whatevers everywhere.
Mellini puts into words what other actor. Writer. Whatever's want to say but haven't been able to put into words
This book inspires me to continue my pursuit in my creative field to keep plugging along... regardless of what others define as success. For those of us at the bottom of the bottom, Mellini is an inspiration. She gets it.
Funny&Sad But So Inspirational For Working Actor
If you could sum up Actor. Writer. Whatever. in three words, what would they be?
Humorous tales about being (barely) making a living as a working actor.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Actor. Writer. Whatever.?
The story about MTV's post September 11 shows on race.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The scene where she is wearing sweat pants on the subway and running into a more successful friend.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Not a moment, but the honesty of what it means to be in this life. It should be depressing, but there is something fulfilling about chasing your dreams even though the pot at end of rainbow may not be filled with lots of gold.

    Members Reviews:
    Fascinating!
What made the experience of listening to Pete Seeger vs. the Un-Americans the most enjoyable?
I enjoyed this deeper look into these proceedings by a longtime friend of Pete Seeger . An interesting and well documented account of how a word, and the fear of it, has been used to destroy artists and thinkers lives for generations. The world was not black and white to Pete. He paid for his convictions but never stopped questioning what would be a better way to improve society and communities.
What other book might you compare Pete Seeger vs. the Un-Americans to and why?
Not sure. I don't remember many other books quite like this one.
Which character as performed by Travis was your favorite?
Pete Seeger, of course. I felt that Travis had a voice with a mid western sort of flavor that lent well to this material. He was easy to listen to and clean in his narration of this story that has so many events and characters. He was easy to follow..
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. Wish I had. I may again.
    Any additional comments?
If you are a Pete Seeger fan or at all interested in getting a better perspective on this important part of the development of our American policies then I would recommend this listen!
    The truth behind Pete Seeger
I always wondered way Pete had the label of communist. This book tells the facts about his cause. Pete believed that we should look out for one another and this book tells that story.

    Title: This I Believe

    Narrator: Emilio Delgado
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 47 mins

    Release date: 04-29-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Artists, Writers, & Musicians
    Publisher's Summary:
In this masterly, deeply personal, and provocative audiobook, the internationally renowned Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes, whose work has been called a combination of Poe, Baudelaire, and Isak Dinesen (Newsweek), steps back to survey the wellsprings of art and ideology, the events that have shaped our time, and his extraordinary life and fiercest passions. Arranged alphabetically from Amore to Zurich, This I Believe takes us on a marvelous inner journey with a great writer. Fuentes ranges wide, from contradictions inherent in Latin American culture and politics to his long friendship with director Luis Buuel. Along the way, we find reflection on the mixed curse and blessing of globalization; memories of a sexual initiation in Zurich; a fond tracing of a family tree heavy with poets, dreamers, and diplomats; evocations of the streets, cafes, and bedrooms of Washington, Paris, Santiago de Chile, Cambridge, Oaxaca, and New York; and a celebration of literary heroes including Balzac, Cervantes, Faulkner, Kafka, and Shakespeare. Throughout, Fuentes captivates with the power of his intellect and his prose. Here, too, are vivid, often heartbreaking glimpses into his personal life. Silvia is a powerful love letter to his beloved wife. In Children, Fuentes recalls the births of his daughters and the tragic death of his son; in Cinema he relives the magic of films such as Citizen Kane and The Wizard of Oz. Further extending his reach, he examines the collision between history and contemporary life in Civil Society, Left, and Revolution. And he poignantly addresses the experiences we all hold in common as he grapples with beauty, death, freedom, God, and sex. By turns provocative and intimate, partisan and universal, this audiobook is a brilliant summation of an international literary career.
    Members Reviews:
    Heart Melting, Tear Jerking Autobiography
If you're going to read a Carlos Fuentes book, read this one. I've bought this book multiple times and I can't keep it on my shelf, I keep handing it to people and letting them know, that this book will change their life.
Say what you will about Carlos Fuentes, some people adore him, some people saw him as part of the aristocracy and the upper classes that didn't understand working class Mexico; but his adoration for his home country is equal parts endearing and heart breaking.
My favorite stories are those of love and the pain of losing a child. The deep and eternal love for the country of Mexico and the empathy for the generational oppression that has plagued it's people since La Conquista.
    Must read!
A hidden bit from a master.
What's not to like...It is Carlos Fuentes, after all.
a tour de force of erudition and sensitivity.
a tour de force of erudition and sensitivity. Truly a "must read"
    SUPER
Very intelligently written by a man with great wisdom. Gives good perspectives on current global issues and shares his own experiences with touching affection.
An alphabetical exploration of the world
I have read both the English and original Spanish versions of this tour de force and have found the book totally captivating. When Mr. Fuentes addresses a subject he expands the dinmensions and your perceptions of said subject to the point where you become enlightened beyond your initial understanding. His literary skills are beyond measurement.
