  • Get Learnt 13 - Political Science & The Canadian Election

This week we had the pleasure of having James, a UBC Alumnus who works for the Liberal Party, on the podcast to talk about his journey into politics, what happens behind the scenes, and the upcoming election October 21st! While James is a Liberal Supporter, we try to be scientific about any viewpoints and offer our own insights. We do talk about the other major parties in Canada, namely The Conservative Party of Canada, The Green Party, and The New Democratic Party (NDP).

As always we appreciate you listening and supporting our podcast, if you have any questions feel free to leave them in a review or tweet to us @getlearntpod . If you feel a particular political viewpoint was not given a fair share of attention or you would like us to have a member of another party on let us know!

  • Get Learnt 09 - Programming
On this episode Shane interviews Jesse on computer programming. Jesse is a co-host of Get Learnt as well as CEO & CTO of RSearch and a Computer Engineering student, so he brings an abundance of experience in software and hardware to the table.
One of the topics we touch on is why computer programming is important for everyone (including scientists) to learn, and some of the ways you may go about learning a new language.
As always if you can share our podcast we really appreciate it! If you have any questions send them via twitter to @getlearntpod and we will be happy to answer them!

  • Get Learnt 08 - Insect Apocalypse
Jesse and Shane discuss what the world would look like if we underwent an insect apocalypse - meaning every insect goes extinct. Some interesting questions we discuss are:
    How would this affect mankind?
How would this affect the other ecological systems?
As always listen, like, subscribe, share, and leave a review! Any questions can be sent to @getlearntpod on Twitter and we will answer in a future episode.

  • Get Learnt 07 - Zoology
We have a new cohost, Shane Simon who is a Neurobiology PhD Candidate @ McMaster University.  In this podcast, Jesse asks Shane a variety of zoology related questions such as:
    What is zoology?
What benefits does humanity receive from studying animals?
Why are C Elegans so fascinating? (hint: their entire neurological system has been mapped)
As well as many more questions, that lead us astray into the field of astrobiology. As always, we would appreciate a listen, like, share, comment, or even a donation to help us bring on more guests to the podcast!

  • Get Learnt 06 - Dr. Cliff Burgess, Theoretical Physicist at The Perimeter Institute
This week we have Dr. Burgess on to talk about his path in Theoretical Physics which has led him from Canada, to the United States, to Switzerland, and back to Canada! Dr. Burgess provides excellent explanations regarding effective field theory and it's usage in not only theoretical physics but in understanding almost anything. We also spend some time talking about multiple dimensions, ways the universe may end, black holes, Hawking radiation, and much more.
Note that some of this is just a discussion about possibilities and is not necessarily an accurate prediction by any metric - however we would love it if we could exploit extra dimensions( other than width, height, length and time) to connect to other universes, and surf the tide of the expanding universe to travel faster than the speed of light(with a given reference point).
