Great Read

Wonderful insight into the mindset and thinking of the Founding Fathers. A bit dense, but well worth the effort.

Critical thinking in RIghts of man

Get some insight into the Founders thinking when they were formulating the Constitution of the USA. These philosophical minds purported timeless truths that influenced many who were instrumental in our Foundation documents. Jefferson and Hamilton and others read and studied these, and n the bio you can get a feel for what influenced Paine to write these folk. Anyone interested in Constitutional History and thought should read this.

Everything old is new again

It's suprising how much things have changed and how much remains the same. Although it was written under circumstances quite unlike todays, he makes, for the most part, a good argument for revolution. It was fun to try to get inside the mindset of that time.

OIlder writings are so compelling to me because the majority of people today act and speak in a similar manner.

Relevant for today as you can see may parallels

"... let none be heard among us, then those of A GOOD CITIZEN, ANOPEN AND RESOLUTE FRIEND, AND A VIRTUOUS SUPPORTER OF THE RIGHTS OF MANKIND..."

If you don't see the above quote in your copy evidently there are different copies of "Common Sense" with some variances. All have the standard four chapters; additions have other materials... Most of the versions I have come in books marked "Common Sense and other writings by Thomas Payne."

As you read "Common Sense" you'll realize there are several ways you can approach this information. One way is to look at it in the time period that it was written as one of his target readers. Another is to apply it to today's way of life. I actually had chosen as a combination. I also thought that I knew the Bible pretty well but found that I had to look up some quotations that he used.

I'm not going to go into detail as I don't want to spoil the surprise of how well he writes on the subject(s). I will say this is one of those books that you want to read before you die but I prefer to read it early so I can live by what I've read. Also I was surprised as with most people quote things like the Constitution or of the Bill of Rights so forth they always quote the large esoteric statements or concepts and forget tell you that it can get bogged down with tedium. This is not the case of "Common Sense" as almost every one of his sentences as a standalone timeless thought.

Very quick read and the facts listed were enough to let you know about the events in history with out going very in-depth.

Reading books about our world history is always a good thing to do. Itâs very entertaining to read a book like this and at the same time youâll learn things that you didnât know existed. I usually read a book like this whenever I am bored or have a lot of free time to burn and I can proudly say that I really enjoyed reading this book.

It is short but somehow managed to capture my interest!

The stages of development right from stone age times

The book has well elaborated on the History of mankind and the stages that we have moved from the initial years before civilization right from Stone Age times and the development of tools that were used to make their hunting and general activities. including the ways and current activities that led to our modern technology and living.

Way too short

This is a 20 minute read. If you are looking for a good overview, find something more substantial. It lacks enough content to strike a narrative. Instead it's a collection of bullet points.

The e-book start off by discussing Emperor Constantine followed by his mother, Helena. The e-book contains three beautiful pictures of that represent Helena with the True Cross. The book describes in excruciating detail the founding and building of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The e-book claimed that I had never heard before that the prophet Mohammed was poisoned to death. The description of the first Muslim take over of Jerusalem was described. Pope Urban II and the Crusades followed next in the reading. I learned a lot about Godfrey of Bouillon and his family. It was under Godfrey that the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher came into being after the Crusaders sees Jerusalem. This e-book contains lots of information; sometimes the amount of detail makes the reading confusing forcing one to reread several pages to get the complete understanding of what was written.
