    Publisher's Summary:
    Pulitzer Prize, Biography, 2016
A deeply rendered self-portrait of a lifelong surfer by the acclaimed New Yorker writer.
Barbarian Days is William Finnegan's memoir of an obsession, a complex enchantment. Surfing only looks like a sport. To initiates it is something else entirely: a beautiful addiction, a demanding course of study, a morally dangerous pastime, a way of life.
Raised in California and Hawaii, Finnegan started surfing as a child. He has chased waves all over the world, wandering for years through the South Pacific, Australia, Asia, Africa. A bookish boy and then an excessively adventurous young man, he went on to become a distinguished writer and war reporter.
Barbarian Days takes us deep into unfamiliar worlds, some of them right under our noses - off the coasts of New York and San Francisco. It immerses the listener in the edgy camaraderie of close male friendships annealed in challenging waves. Finnegan shares stories of life in a whites-only gang in a tough school in Honolulu even while his closest friend was a Hawaiian surfer. He shows us a world turned upside down for kids and adults alike by the social upheavals of the 1960s. He details the intricacies of famous waves and his own apprenticeships to them. Youthful folly - he drops LSD while riding huge Honolua Bay on Maui - is served up with rueful humor. He and a buddy, their knapsacks crammed with reef charts, bushwhack through Polynesia. They discover, while camping on an uninhabited island in Fiji, one of the world's greatest waves.
As Finnegan's travels take him ever farther afield, he becomes an improbable anthropologist: unpicking the picturesque simplicity of a Samoan fishing village, dissecting the sexual politics of Tongan interactions with Americans and Japanese, navigating the Indonesian black market while nearly succumbing to malaria. Throughout, he surfs, carrying listeners with him on rides of harrowing, unprecedented lucidity.

An Amazing Performance by the Author
    Any additional comments?
An important caveat about this book - its not just for those who surf. As someone who has never attempted this sport in her life, I thoroughly enjoyed William Finnegans lengthy memoir. A detailed, and nicely-paced story, Barbarian Days begins in 1960s Hawaii, and from there takes us on an adventure around the word. Finnegans memoir is more than just an ode to a past time its a story of balancing an obsession with the inevitable responsibilities of adulthood. He reflects on his past with humor, panache, and of course, a reverence for the sport which profoundly shaped his life.
Wishing for a never-end of this book
If you could sum up Barbarian Days in three words, what would they be?
    perfect reminice, haunting
What other book might you compare Barbarian Days to and why?
Most of Russell Chatham's books on fishing. especially Dark Waters
    Which scene was your favorite?
    Loved every last page
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
A time and a place gone forever
    Any additional comments?
I deeply loved this book. The Hawaii chapter took me back to my Kahala childhood of the 60's. It's all true, exactly as Finnegan wrote. I physically flinched at some of the really awful passages about local brutality to outsiders in those days. The surfing life of the 60's and 70's are perfectly captured in Finnegan's memories.

Length: 3 hrs and 35 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-14-15
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 14492 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Hailed by Toni Morrison as "required reading", a bold and personal literary exploration of America's racial history by "the single best writer on the subject of race in the United States" (The New York Observer).
"This is your country, this is your world, this is your body, and you must find some way to live within the all of it."
In a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation's history and current crisis. Americans have built an empire on the idea of "race", a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men - bodies exploited through slavery and segregation and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden?
Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates' attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his son - and listeners - the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children's lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative, reimagined history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, Between the World and Me clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward.
    Critic Reviews:
    "The language of
Between the World and Me, like Coates's journey, is visceral, eloquent, and beautifully redemptive.... This is required reading." (Toni Morrison)
"Ta-Nehisi Coates's delivery of his own book is so memorable because the material is charged with emotion and a tone of self-disclosure. There's also a highly personal sense of connection between himself and his audience because of his frequent use of 'you.'" (

    A Heartfelt Self-aware Literary Masterpiece
This book manages to do something that is rarely accomplished with such a serious subject. It's well thought out and methodical but simultaneous emotional and sincerely heartfelt. Written as a letter to his son Coates explains how to exist in modern day America as a black man. He gets very introspective and deeply personal when sharing annidotes about his life and each story lead to a deeper understanding for him. If I were to write a handbook on how to raise a black male who's conscious of his circumstances but not resigned to other people's ideas of who he is, and taking those lessons to transcend what America thinks he's capable of, this would be that handbook.
After listening to this book, I ordered 10 hardback copies and gave one to each of my nephews and my uncles. I find myself quoting Ta-Nehisi now like some pretentious fanboy posting Bieber lyrics on twitter.

    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
An extraordinary insight into life under one of the world's most ruthless and secretive dictatorships - and the story of one woman's terrifying struggle to avoid capture/repatriation and guide her family to freedom.
As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee was one of millions trapped by a secretive and brutal communist regime. Her home on the border with China gave her some exposure to the world beyond the confines of the Hermit Kingdom, and, as the famine of the 1990s struck, she began to wonder, question and realise that she had been brainwashed her entire life.
Given the repression, poverty and starvation she witnessed, surely her country could not be, as she had been told "the best on the planet".
Aged 17, she decided to escape North Korea. She could not have imagined that it would be 12 years before she was reunited with her family.
She could not return, since rumours of her escape were spreading, and she and her family could incur the punishments of the government authorities - involving imprisonment, torture and possible public execution.
Hyeonseo instead remained in China and rapidly learned Chinese in an effort to adapt and survive. And 12 years and two lifetimes later, she would return to the North Korean border in a daring mission to spirit her mother and brother to South Korea on one of the most arduous, costly and dangerous journeys imaginable.
This is the unique story not only of Hyeonseo's escape from the darkness into the light but also of her coming of age and education and the resolve she found to rebuild her life - not once but twice - first in China then in South Korea. Strong, brave and eloquent, this memoir is a triumph of her remarkable spirit.
    Critic Reviews:
"The most riveting TED talk ever." (Oprah)
"This is a powerful story of an escapee from North Korea. In the hallowed meeting rooms of the United Nations in New York, ambassadors from North Korea recently sought to shout down stories like this. But these voices will not be silenced. Eventually freedom will be restored. History will vindicate Hyeonseo Lee and those like her for the risks they ran so that their bodies and their minds could be free. And so that we could know the truth." (Michael Kirby, chair of the UN commission on human rights abuses in North Korea)
"When I first met Hyeonseo Lee, the unflinching manner in which she told her story was inspirational. She experienced hunger, coldness, fear, terror, threats and pursuit. All this she had to endure, simply for being a North Korean refugee. But the one thing that she held on to was her humanity, ever stronger as she continuously sublimated her hardships into hope. This is a sad and beautiful story of a girl who could not even keep her name, yet overcome all with the identity of what it is to be human." (Jang Jin-sung, author of Dear Leader: Poet, Spy, Escapee - A Look Inside North Korea)

Length: 8 hrs and 53 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-11-15
    Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Volume two of Rae Earl's hilarious teenage diaries chronicles her all-important final year of high school...but how can school compete with more pressing crises like romance, her looks and a crazy family life?
Rae Earl is about to enter the most important year of her life - her actual bloody final year of school. But how the hell can she concentrate on that when it looks like the love of her life, Haddock, may be about to seriously do it with her?
The thing is...is she ready? What if she's actually meant to be with Battered Sausage? And are either of these boys really that interested in her at all?
She's certainly not getting any thinner; in fact she's getting fatter. Every time she thinks of her final exams, she has to have another biscuit. Or five. And it's very difficult to concentrate on anything when her mum's Moroccan boyfriend is singing along to the radio in Arabic....
    Critic Reviews:
"Funnier, sadder and ruder than Adrian Mole, this will delight teenagers past and present." (Financial Times)
"This show actually is my mad fat diary. I have already pretty much lived this show, for real.... Reminds you how rarely you see teenage girls on television doing anything other than looking sexy in short skirts, endlessly texting their friends about parties, or wailing 'It's so unfair' when their parents won't buy them a car." (Caitlin Moran for The Times)

Way Different Than the TV Series but Just as Good
Would you consider the audio edition of My Madder Fatter Diary to be better than the print version?
It's difficult to say, as you get different things from the print version. In print it is more like reading a real diary but the audio version brings the characters to life, particularly because of the authentic accent.
What did you like best about this story?
The honesty, really describing what Rae feels inside. It is very comforting to know that others are not as together as they outwardly appear.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
    Can't choose, all good!
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    It was spot on.
    Any additional comments?
    Great read, great listen!

I loved this book so much! Entertaining! Addictive! Glad she got there in the end!

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Rae Earl's hysterically funny and very touching real-life 1989 diary. If Adrian Mole had a teenage sister, she'd sound like this.
It's 1989, and Rae Earl is a fat, boy-mad 17-year-old girl living with her mum and their deaf white cat in a council house with a mint-green bathroom suite and a kitchen Rae can't keep away from.
This is the hilarious real-life diary she kept during that fateful year - with characters like her evil friend, Bethany; Bethany's besotted boyfriend; and the boys from the school up the road (who have code names like Haddock and Battered Sausage).
My Mad Fat Diary evokes a vanished time when Charles and Di are still together, the Berlin wall is up, and Kylie is expected to disappear from the charts at any moment. It will appeal to anyone who lived through the 1980s. But it will also strike a chord with anyone who's ever been a confused, lonely teenager who clashes with their mother, takes themselves very seriously and has no idea how utterly funny they are.
    Critic Reviews:
"You wouldn't catch many people revealing their true teen thoughts. Hurray then for Rae Earl, who dug out her 1989 diary and published it in the raw. Hilarious and gut-wrenchingly familiar." (In Style)
"Full of 80s nostalgia, this journal will make you laugh out loud." (Closer, four stars)

    Release date: 06-09-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 1677 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
When she was suddenly given the opportunity of a new life in rural Jutland, journalist and archetypal Londoner Helen Russell discovered a startling statistic: the happiest place on earth isn't Disneyland but Denmark, a land often thought of by foreigners as consisting entirely of long, dark winters, cured herring, Lego and pastries. What is the secret to their success? Are happy Danes born or made?
Helen decides there is only one way to find out: she will give herself a year, trying to uncover the formula for Danish happiness. From child care, education, food and interior design to SAD, taxes, sexism and an unfortunate predilection for burning witches, The Year of Living Danishly is a funny, poignant record of a journey that shows us where the Danes get it right, where they get it wrong, and how we might just benefit from living a little more Danishly ourselves.
Helen Russell is a journalist and former editor of MarieClaire.co.uk. She now lives in rural Jutland and works as a Scandinavia correspondent for the Guardian as well as writing a column on Denmark for the Telegraph.
    Critic Reviews:
"A lovely mix of English sensibility and Danish pragmatism. Helen seems to have understood more about the Danish character than I have! My only worry is that it will make everyone want to have a go and my holiday home area will get overcrowded." (Sandi Toksvig)
"Russell is possessed of a razor-sharp wit and a winning self-deprecation - two of the things that make this book such a delight." (The Independent)
    Members Reviews:
    Interesting content. Unfortunate delivery.
Where does The Year of Living Danishly rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This book ranks right in the middle. Time well spent and very interesting, but not touching or miraculous or life changing.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I do wish that the author had read this book herself for the audiobook as there was a lot of subtle humor and personal musings that were totally lost in Lucy Price-Lewis's delivery. There were quite a few very funny moments - big and small - that managed to fall noticeably short. Knowing nothing about her beyond reading this book, I imagine that the author is very sharp-witted, fun and bold. This was a story about her personal life and it was unfortunate that it somehow felt flat and impersonal.
What three words best describe Lucy Price-Lewiss performance?
Not well matched, too proper, lacking a flair for subtle humor.
    Any additional comments?
I truly enjoyed taking a step into Danish culture and felt like the author hit every mark - from pastries to neighbors to politics to parenting. Her professional writing experience offered an unexpected quality of perspective and observation. I came to appreciate that her story wasn't just a meandering "year in the life", but followed a rather diligent and purposeful (but still lighthearted) path.
The concept of "hygge" (even if it was pronounced incorrectly) is a major theme that stands out as one of the only things I have any hope of embracing or emulating in my own life. I hope to do so though as it seems to be a wonderful thing! Unfortunately, most of the social norms and programs described could never exist outside of such a small and unique country.

    Publisher's Summary:
From the author of the New York Times number-one best seller The Untethered Soul comes the astonishing true-life story about what happens when you just let go.
A thriving spiritual community on over 600 acres of pristine forest and meadows in Florida, a cutting-edge software package that transformed the medical-practice management industry, a billion-dollar public company whose achievements are archived in the Smithsonian Institution, a book that became a New York Times best seller and an Oprah favorite, and a massive raid by the FBI that would lead to unfounded accusations by the US government - how could all of this spring from a man who had decided to live alone in the middle of the woods, let go of himself, and embrace a life of solitude? But this man had made a radical decision - one that would unwittingly lead him to both the pinnacle of success and the brink of disaster.
Michael A. Singer, author of The Untethered Soul, tells the extraordinary story of what happened when, after a deep spiritual awakening, he decided to let go of his personal preferences and simply let life call the shots. As Singer takes you on this great experiment and journey into life's perfection, the events that transpire will both challenge your deepest assumptions about life and inspire you to look at your own life in a radically different way.
    Critic Reviews:
"A lone voice in the modern wilderness calling for surrender instead of striving, Singer shows how surrendering to life does not mean giving up our dreams." (Shawn Achor, happiness researcher and
    NY Times best-selling author of
    The Happiness Advantage)
"Only the rarest of books has the power to clearly explain the difference between a human being and a human doing, and why that distinction is so important.
The Surrender Experiment is such a book. Inspiring, authentic, and intensely compelling." (Dean Radin, author of
    The Conscious Universe)
"Michael Singer writes a beautiful, touching memoir on the amazing power of surrender in his life. With courage, spunk, and thoughtfulness, he has reached beyond the status quo to dare to trust life and surrender to its ultimate perfection." (Judith Orloff, MD, author,
    The Ecstasy of Surrender)
    Members Reviews:
    The Highest Path Of Freedom
Michael Singer recounts vividly his path through life living it as it arrives. Acceptance and surrender trump personal plans and preferences. The author demonstrates, through his own journey that peace and happiness are achieved when we cooperate rather than compete with what it presents us.
Having read 'The Untethered Soul' and put its sacred truths into practice during the most challenging period of my life, I can say without hesitation that Mr Singer's life of surrender is truly liberating, the essence of real freedom and the secret to unsurpassed peace.
    Riveting! Superb!
If you could sum up The Surrender Experiment in three words, what would they be?
    Riveting, transparent, intriguing, mind-blowing stories!
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Surrender Experiment?
This made VERY aware of just how many thoughts of RESISTANCE crossed my mind. Michael's other book, Untethered Soul, made me aware of the constant chatter, but Surrender Experiment made me acutely aware of thoughts of RESISTANCE which was truly transformative.

Fell in love all over again.
Would you consider the audio edition of I Hate Myselfie to be better than the print version?
I subscribed to Shane when he was still under 1000 subs (I am now 24). Hearing his voice narrate his life is something i think only he deserved to bring to life. She really added so much enthusiasm. The audio is always best!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Shane. Since the begging of his you tube we have all been by his side rooting for him. He has a great outlook on life i adore him.
Have you listened to any of Shane Dawsons other performances before? How does this one compare?
I'm sure this is his only book. but i do follow his podcast and videos. he never disappoints. he has a great voice.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It was, and i did! .. It was one of those ones you cant put down.
    Any additional comments?
Shane, I love you. always have always will. this is a great book i would recommend to anyone. He really helped me feel happy on days I didn't think i would see tomorrow.
    Laughing!
I honestly did not expect this when I bought this book! In all seriousness I just liked the title.
Lucky for me I enjoyed it a lot! I've been listening to it in the living room over the last two days and even my mother enjoyed it - which is saying something. So I do recommend this! I like the fact that it's "real" and "raw". If there is more books coming from Shane - I'll definitely buy them!
    Simply fantastic.
It was greater than any expectation I had. As a viewer of Shane's since the beginning, I knew this book would be great although I knew most of the stories before hand! None the less, it was even greater to hear him say a collection of them at once and to hear his true heartfelt voice telling each story. It's great to hear these relatable stories because you know the hard times made someone who they are today! It was an amazing "read" and I would recommend it to anyone who would enjoy a laugh, an "aww" and a "wtf?".
Never heard of Shane Dawson and still loved this!
I listened to this not knowing that Shane Dawson was/is a huge YouTube personality, and having no background on him at all made no impact on my enjoyment of his essays.

Groundbreaking, thrilling and revealing, The Reaper is the astonishing memoir of Special Operations Direct Action Sniper Nicholas Irving, the 3rd Ranger Battalion's deadliest sniper with 33 confirmed kills, though his remarkable career total, including probables, is unknown. In the best-selling tradition of American Sniper and Shooter, Irving shares the true story of his extraordinary career, including his deployment to Afghanistan in the summer of 2009, when he set another record, this time for enemy kills on a single deployment. His teammates and chain of command labeled him "The Reaper," and his actions on the battlefield became the stuff of legend, culminating in an extraordinary face-off against an enemy sniper known simply as The Chechnian. Irving's astonishing first-person account of his development into an expert assassin offers a fascinating and extremely rare view of special operations combat missions through the eyes of a Ranger sniper during the Global War on Terrorism. From the brotherhood and sacrifice of teammates in battle to the cold reality of taking a life to protect another, no other audiobook dives so deeply inside the life of a sniper on point.

    Vivid and Sincere Military Spirit
Would you consider the audio edition of The Reaper to be better than the print version?
Have only listen to the audiobook. But I would have to assume that if the written copy is like the audiobook than its good to go.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Reaper?
The part were Mike falls into that underground cave which was some 75 to 80 feet below the surface and his only injury was a broken Tibia.
What does Jeff Gurner bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Jeff brings this story to life through his own spirit and annunciation of the outstanding story which Nick lived while he went through his many tours of duty. He brings the story full circle in a very unique way which brings authenticity and a true military demeanor through its chapters.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Afghanistan the land of the Reaper and the U.S. Rangers.

    Great story
This is a very interesting description of modern combat and how our Rangers operate. Nicholas is a very brave Ranger and this shows how our Rangers take care of their own and risk their lives for their brothers. I'm glad we have men like Nicolas. My son is an officer in the Rangers and I'm very happy he has men around him like this.
    Disjointed and tough to follow
Irving is a great man but whoever edited this story could have helped structure the flow and dialogue to be more engaging. It seemed like they let him just talk into a dictation machine and then they simply spell checked it.
    Moderately Okay
It's a basically a play by play of a mid twenties guy in a war zone. One real fascinating mission, the others are fluff pieces that are very unexciting. You can tell the author was in his twenties with his constant use of the word awesome. He repeats several stories from his past over again.
