Yakovlevitch is at pains to rid himself as quickly as he can of the nose, which he recognizes as belonging to one of his clients, Major Kovalev. Kovalev, on the other hand, awakes to find his nose missing and leaves no stone unturned in trying to track the missing organ down....with each twist of the tale, the story gets odder and odder as the nose develops a life and personality of its own. Gogol at his surrealist best!

The Nose

The Nose is a short story written by Nikolai Gogol. Written somewhere between 1835 and 1836.

Nikolai Gogol wrote this book to entertain the masses using satire and events that could never possibly happen. It was written from a 3rd person view. As previously stated it is a fictional and absurd short story about an official whose nose falls off and goes on an adventure. The intended audience of The Nose would be young teens. Using an informal writing style Gogol uses words that teens would know and not many they would need to look up, though there are a few examples of word I didnât personally know. I enjoyed the story while I read it.

Theme: A nose who runs off on its own adventure and the officer who must deal with it.

Thesis: There is no thesis because itâs a simple short story

Gogol tells his story starting first at the end of the story and then goes back to tell the whole story much like The Death of Ivan Ilyich.

Nikolai Gogol is known for his stories of surrealism. He has written many plays and short stories such as The Overcoat and the play Marriage.

The Nose contains four âchaptersâ none of which are named. The book has 38 pages but the pages are laid out with wide margins and larger font.

The Nose

The Nose was written by Nikolai Gogol and is a short story written between 1835-1986 the actual year is not known.

The book starts out with a barber named Ivan Jakovlevitch. Ivan lived at home in St. Petersburg with his wife Prasskovna Ossipovna. As soon as he wakes up him and his wife are fighting. When he sits down at the table to eat a loaf of bread she threw at him he starts to investigate the bread. After digging around for a little he pulls out a nose! Prasskavna does not find this funny and accuses him of cutting off someones nose while shaving them and threatens to tell the police. When he suggests putting in in the corner for the day she gets even more mad, so he leaves very early in the morning with the nose.

Ivan is known the be a drunk and does not groom himself well, even his overcoat is missing all of itâs buttons. Early in the morning he stands on a bridge to let the nose drop. When he does a police man sees him and asks him what he just threw. He refuses to answer and the story cuts off there and turns to a man named Kovaloff, who is a member of the Municipal Committee and prefers to be called Major.

That morning the Major wakes up to see that him nose is missing. He decides to go in search of his nose and walks outside with a napkin over his face. While looking at his reflection in a barber shop he looks outside to see a carriage and a gentleman in uniform step out.

If The Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk is the best known of Nikolai Leskov's works outside Russia, that is owing mainly to the opera Dmitri Shostakovich made of it in 1934. Like Soviet critics of the time, Shostakovich saw the heroine as the embodiment of protest against a corrupt and stultifying bourgeois society and therefore justifiable in her actions, if not exactly innocent. To make that reading more persuasive, he eliminated the third and most terrible of her crimes. Andrzej Wajda did not go so far in his film version, A Siberian Lady Macbeth (1962), but he did make the third victim a selfish and manipulative little creature and therefore "deserving" of his fate.

Leskov's story allows for no such simplifying social explanations. It is a dramatic portrayal of the amoral, ambiguous, elemental force of sexual passion, as intense in its heat as in its coldness. In stylistic directness and narrative concentration, it is unique among his works. He wrote it while visiting relatives in Kiev, where he was given space in the university's punishment room. He later described how his hair stood on end as he worked on it alone in that unlikely place and swore he would never describe such horrors again. The story, one of Leskov's earliest, was first published in Dostoevsky's magazine Epoch in 1865.

This lecture series covers the proper/academic definition of the "modern novel," that is, novels written as part of the Modernist movement in the earlier part of the 20th century. Don't be a dummy like me, not read the production description, assume the colloquial term for modern, and think the series was going to cover novels all through the 20th century well past the period actually addressed.

That being said, Prof. Elkins offers a wonderful little series of lectures about some books that definitely deserve a second (or first) reading if you haven't tackled these novels since school that provides great insight into the writing, and social and historical context behind the books.

I would definitely listen to a lecture series from Prof. Elkins that's a traditional length for the Great Courses (15-20 hours) and would recommend this series to anyone interested in 20th century literature. A very enjoyable listen.

I specifically picked out this selection because of Prof. Elkins. My only disappointment is that it is half the length of her course on the giants of French literature.

As a long time lover of poetry of all kinds, I decided to purchase this collection. A fun read.

The poems in this book were really good. I enjoyed it quite a bit. My only wish is that there were new poems to accompany the older poems from deceased writers. Still, it was a fun read.

Loved it!

I really enjoyed these poems. Yes, a couple of them are a little too long and complicated to understand, but all in all I thought it was a delightful collection. Although Im sure most of them were a little "scandalous" for their time, I wouldnt call them erotic. Its more of a collection of love poems, poetry lovers will enjoy!

Where does I Miserabili [Les Miserables] rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Letto e interpretato veramente in maniera superba, ma a mio avviso troppi intermezzi musicali.

What disappointed you about I Miserabili [Les Miserables]?

This was my first time using Audible but I stupidly ordered it in Italian ( which I don't speak), the book is probably perfectly fine but I will never know. Luckily it was a gift.

Abridged? Silent mode?

I should probably have bought the abridged version, going against my principle of only reading unabridged, because the pieces of text that actually don't belong with the story are easy to cut out without hindering comprehension, the reader wouldn't miss anything important (is anyone really interested in the history of the sewage system of the city of Paris?). However, this is the version I bought and listened to, so this is what I'll review. And since there are tons of comments on the actual book in the reviews of the English language editions, I'll limit my review to the narration. I don't know if narrators are supposed to read before the books they're going to narrate, but I would guess Silvia Cecchini does that. She certainly knows what she's reading, she gives everything the right intonation, she's not 'flat' as a narrator. But she's too fast. Always. At least for my taste. I appreciate the fact that the books she narrates are cheap and I understand why (no studio is involved in the recording), but I don't appreciate the end result. Basically, she works at home. And while the occasional ambulance siren is inevitable, the vibrations of the mobile phone are not. Being deprived of one's mobile phone while working may be unpleasant, but there are options such as the silent mode. On the other hand, I don't have many alternatives to jumping whenever her phone vibrates while she works and I listen to the recording...
