Publisher's Summary:
In this hour, are we alone in the universe? Almost certainly not. For thousands of years, humans have wondered who and what might live beyond the confines of our planet. Now, a generation of out-of-the-box scientists are using everything in the worlds toolbox to develop the new science of astrobiology and bring us to the edge of the biggest breakthrough since Copernicus and Galileo. Science writer Marc Kaufman gives us an overview.
Next, investigative journalist Leslie Kean talks to Jim Fleming about her book, UFOs: Generals, Pilots, and Government Officials Go on the Record. As Kean writes, 95 per cent of all reported UFO sightings can be explained as ordinary phenomena. But the remaining five percent includes UFO events that have been well-documented and officially investigated.
Then, are we alone in the universe? Astronomer Dimitar Sasselov is leading the hunt for "super-Earths" -- rocky planets like our own that orbit other stars. He and his colleagues believe it's only a matter of time before they discover a super-Earth that is not only habitable, but home to some form of life. He explains that the search for extraterrestrial life takes to forms: planet hunting, and the creation of the world's first artificial cells.
After that, Guy Consolmagno is an American planetary researcher and a Jesuit priest. He's the curator of one of the world's great collections of meteorites, at the Vatican Observatory. He gets a lot of questions about how he can be both a priest and a scientist. Luckily, he has a sense of humor about it -- witness a recent appearance on the Colbert Report -- and believes science and religion can work together.
And finally, what if we find life on another planet? What will we do next? Science fiction writer Orson Scott Card has thought extensively about the politics and ethics of first contacts. His award-winning classic, Ender's Game lays out a few possibilities. He's just published a new addition to the Ender series. Steve Paulson takes the opportunity to ask him how he'd respond to news of the discovery of an alien civilization. [Broadcast Date: November 9, 2013]
