A Relatable Heroine and Lots of Action
In the second volume of the Elk Riders fantasy epic, siblings Gabriella and Dameon Carlyle continue their quest to save their island homeland, Harkness, by finding the treasure of Nicomedes and returning in time to pay the Servior, a wicked group of sorcerers who are trying to obtain the Tower of the Dead which is in Harkness. The book begins with their skyship crumbling, its captain dead, and Gabriellaâs mentor, Omanuju, wounded. Now, Gabriella, with her autistic brother, the greedy Mortimer, and Omanujuâs magical elk, Adamantus, are left to find the land of Dis where the treasure lies. But danger and betrayal lurks behind every corner, and Gabriella is faced with one obstacle after another (dragons, the evil twins Sybil and Libys, the Furies â) as they rush against time to save Harkness.
Ted Neill has created an unusual and entertaining fantasy in the Elk Riders Series. Gabriella is a fourteen-year-old girl who must find the strength to save her home while contending with one catastrophe after another. But even more than the exciting, fast-paced plot which keeps you reading to discover what lies in store for Gabriella, this is a book about loyalty, friendship and family. Gabriellaâs brother has for most of her life been a burden because of his perceived weirdness, costing her friends and making the family pariahs in their community. Now that they find themselves in peril, she is even more resentful of having to care for him. How can she keep her promise to return her brother safely back home when he is so useless? And will she even be able to retrieve the treasure if her resentment means she isnât pure? Neill creates a relatable heroine in Gabriella; one with inner conflicts and faults which ring true. The story is a good read for both young adults and adults alike.
Readable Fantasy
This story opens on Gabriella, who is attempting to rally after several setbacks. Sheâs been joined by her autistic younger brother (Dameon) and a trapper from their village (Mortimer), who may both be more trouble than theyâre worth. If that wasnât bad enough, the ship theyâve been traveling on has started falling apart. Meanwhile, Sade and his brother are forced into slavery until he loses control and torches everyone on their ship but the two of them. Then they're rescued by a group of unscrupulous magiciansâ
Even if readers didnât start with the first book in the series, this one should be easy enough to follow. It basically chronicles Gabriellaâs adventures, with some chapters about Sade and his brother thrown in for good measure. Readers of the previous book will automatically understand why the villainous duo is included in the narrative.
