    Publisher's Summary:
In an exquisitely written memoir, Mia Farrow introduces us to the landscapes of her extraordinary life. Moving from her earliest memories of the walled gardens and rocky shores of western Ireland and her Hollywood childhood to her career as an actress, she writes of these experiences and her struggle to protect her children in a painful custody battle with Woody Allen. It was this crisis that led her to reflect upon the incidents that had brought her to a place so incomprehensible. Now, in What Falls Away, a memoir resonant not only in its honesty but also in its beautifully written prose, Mia Farrow speaks for the first time. Told with grace and deep understanding, as well as humor, What Falls Away goes beneath the surface of this amazing life, with all its drama, success, and pain, and exposes the inner workings of a mind and spirit for whom truth, compassion, and faith are essential.

    Publisher's Summary:
Former president George Bush has no plans to write his autobiography, so this collection of letters, diary entries, and memos, plus his commentary, fills that void. The volume includes letters from Bush to his parents during World War II, a love letter to wife Barbara, letters to his children (written just before Richard Nixon's resignation and at the beginning of Desert Storm), and many more. They offer insights into Bush's career, from the Navy to the oil business, and his political life: two terms in Congress, an ambassadorship to the U.N., his tenure with the Central Intelligence Agency, the vice presidency, the presidency, and the post-presidency. As the Bushes continue to emerge as a major political family, this portrait of its unassuming patriarch is timely and important, offering an intimate look at one of America's most private public figures.

Length: 7 hrs and 22 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-31-17
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 81 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Raucous family memoir meets medical adventure in this heartfelt, hilarious book exploring the public and private theaters of illness.
After a tumor bursts in Mike Scalise's brain, leaving him with a hole in the head and malfunctioning hormones, he must navigate a new alien world of illness maintenance. His mother, who has a chronic heart condition and a flair for drama, becomes a complicated model as she competes with him for the status of "best sick person". The Brand New Catastrophe is a moving, funny exploration of how we define ourselves by the stories we choose to tell. And here, in audio, Scalise tells his stories directly to the listener, bringing added depth and unmatched sincerity to this very personal story.
Mike Scalise's work has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Agni, Indiewire, The Paris Review Daily, and elsewhere. He has received fellowships and scholarships from Bread Loaf, Yaddo, and the Ucross Foundation and was the Philip Roth Writer in Residence at Bucknell University. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.
The Brand New Catastrophe is the winner of the Center for Fiction's Christopher Doheny Award, which recognizes excellence in writing about serious illness. The prize was created by Audible in honor of Chris Doheny, a long-time employee who lost his battle with cystic fibrosis in 2013.
    Cover design by Oliver Munday.
    Editorial Reviews:
Instead, Chris liked to talk about books. (And music. And good coffee. And soccer. But a lot about books.) In our work together at Audible, Chris championed his favorites - Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, Pastoralia by George Saunders, and Tinkers by Paul Harding...long before it won the Pulitzer. The first book he ever recommended to me, Ann Patchett's Bel Canto, is still one of my favorites, and my children love Jon Klassen's darkly funny I Want My Hat Back, a gift from 'Uncle Chris' that perfectly reflected his wicked sense of humor. Chris's discerning taste and deep love of literature was prevalent in all facets of his life - he even named his pet rabbit Vonnegut. Towards the end, he was almost done writing his own novel, and it was at his request that his vast collection of books was given away at his funeral - the best way for a book lover to leave a piece of himself with his friends.
And when we knew that the end was coming, Audible's publisher, Beth Anderson - the woman who hired both me and Chris and had been our mentor since 2004 - worked with Chris to figure out the best way we could honor him. And so The Christopher Doheny Award was established with The Center for Fiction to recognize excellence in fiction or nonfiction on the topic of serious physical illness. The author has to have personal experience dealing with life-threatening illness, either his or her own or that of a close relative or friend. Because even though Chris didn't let CF define him, he thought it important that more books address the toll that serious illness can take.
I'm honored to serve as one of the judges for the Doheny Award each year - despite the pressure of living up to Chris's high literary standards! - and am proud to share that the latest winner is now available: The Brand New Catastrophe by Mike Scalise. In his frank and funny memoir, Mike wrestles with how we define ourselves by the stories we choose to tell.

  • Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven Audiobook by Susan Jane Gilman

Length: 7 hrs and 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-24-09
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 128 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Best-selling author Susan Jane Gilman's new memoir is a hilarious and harrowing journey, a modern heart of darkness filled with Communist operatives, backpackers, and pancakes.
In 1986, fresh out of college, Gilman and her friend Claire yearned to do something daring and original that did not involve getting a job. Inspired by a place mat at the International House of Pancakes, they decided to embark on an ambitious trip around the globe, starting in the People's Republic of China. At that point, China had been open to independent travelers for roughly ten minutes.
Armed only with the collected works of Nietzsche, an astrological love guide, and an arsenal of bravado, the two friends plunged into the dusty streets of Shanghai. Unsurprisingly, they quickly found themselves in over their heads. As they ventured off the map deep into Chinese territory, they were stripped of everything familiar and forced to confront their limitations amid culture shock and government surveillance. What began as a journey full of humor, eroticism, and enlightenment grew increasingly sinister-becoming a real-life international thriller that transformed them forever.
Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven is a flat-out page-turner, an astonishing true story of hubris and redemption told with Gilman's trademark compassion, lyricism, and wit.

  • Mayhem Audiobook by Sigrid Rausing

    Title: Mayhem
    Subtitle: A Memoir
    Author: Sigrid Rausing

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 55 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-05-17
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 11 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
A searingly powerful memoir about the impact of addiction on a family.
In the summer of 2012, a woman named Eva was found dead in the London townhouse she shared with her husband, Hans K. Rausing. The couple had struggled with drug addiction for years, often under the glare of tabloid headlines. Now, writing with singular clarity and restraint, Hans' sister, the editor and publisher Sigrid Rausing, tries to make sense of what happened.
In Mayhem, she asks the difficult questions those close to the world of addiction must face. "Who can help the addict, consumed by a shaming hunger, a need beyond control? There is no medicine: the drugs are the medicine. And who can help their families, so implicated in the self-destruction of the addict? Who can help when the very notion of 'help' becomes synonymous with an exercise of power; a familial police state; an end to freedom, in the addict's mind?"
An eloquent and timely attempt to understand the conundrum of addiction - and a memoir as devastating as it is riveting.
    Critic Reviews:
"A profoundly articulate and harrowing memoir of a family grappling with addiction. With love and tenderness, respect and reserve, Sigrid Rausing explores the evolution of her brother and sister-in-law's addiction and its effect on her entire family. Her deftly layered observations about how one can be both knowing and not knowing capture a parent's innate sense of a child's being in danger; one sibling's desperate attempts to save another; and a deeply private family who find themselves suddenly exposed. Ultimately, what Rausing finds is a way to tell her own story, including among objects from the past that remind her of what once was, or might have been. I was impressed and moved." (A. M. Homes)
"In this mesmerizing account of her brother's descent into addiction and her sister-in-law's untimely death, Sigrid Rausing explores sweeping questions about what it means to choose or refuse a moral life; what tragedy looks like when it is woven into privilege; and how we control or surrender to our perceived destinies. Written in elegiac, lyrical prose,
Mayhem is deeply passionate in its impossible attempt to adduce a redeeming vitality from an agonizing chaos. This is a brave, elegant, inspired book." (Andrew Solomon)

  • Beyond ADHD Audiobook by Jeff Emmerson, Robert Yehling

    Title: Beyond ADHD
Subtitle: Overcoming the Label and Thriving
    Author: Jeff Emmerson, Robert Yehling
    Narrator: David Colacci
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 51 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-16-17
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Beyond ADHD weaves Jeff Emmerson's personal story of his ADHD diagnosis, exploring along the way the latest medical, scientific, and societal explanations and tools for managing and living with the condition. Including interviews with a number of experts at the forefront of next-generation ADHD diagnostics and treatment, he questions the cookie-cutter way ADHD is commonly diagnosed and treated. Suggesting that the list of symptoms often used to identify ADHD can be attributed to many other disorders and conditions, he explores how and why ADHD diagnoses have increased by 50 percent in the last 10 years.
Emmerson advocates a different approach to ADHD, arguing that it should be a diagnosis of exclusion rather than the other way around, and that we must look past the label, recognizing that individual symptoms vary and treatment plans should be better tailored to the individual. He examines mental and behavioral issues from all sides, including the possibility that nurturing - rather than trying to alter or suppress - the active, "360-degree" mind is a viable way for those diagnosed with ADHD to realize their gifts and lead purposeful lives.
    Critic Reviews:
"A beautiful amalgam of lived experience and first rate science writing. Helpful and inspiring for those who suffer with ADHD; essential for those who need protection from misdiagnosis and careless drug prescriptions." (Allen Frances, MD, DSM-IV Task Force; and professor emeritus, Duke University School of Medicine)
