Not what I thought it was going to be.

No, it was not like the story I was expecting at all. Maybe it was my fault for not looking in to it enough.

Was CRACK99 worth the listening time?

I thought books like @WAR, Data and Goliath where way better. So no it was not worth my time.

What disappointed you about CRACK99?

II usually don't write reviews. But this book was not good and I don't want anyone else to waste nearly 11 hours of their life on it. I love true crime, especially when it comes to technology--but this was literally written from the most boring point of view possible--the US Attorney that prosecuted the piracy case. Here's what I didn't like about the book 1.) It was way too long--it was filled with fluff from the author about other unrelated cases that he prosecuted throughout his career 2.) He spent wait too much time on the details in the case, i.e.. repeating the name of every piece of software and what it was worth throughout the story,. It just seemed to drag on with no end in sight. This would have been much more interesting if it was told from another perspective or with more of the actual technology behind the cracks--which was actually pretty sophisticated but only talked about in passing. There was no real connection to the other characters in the book and the end felt anticlimactic. There are plenty of other tech-crime stories out there to tickle your fancy.

In May 1981, Ruie Ann Parks body was found by her adult son in a pool of blood in her own home. Her home was located on top of Log Town Hill overlooking the Arkansas River in Van Buren, Arkansas.

She was beaten to death and left for dead. The police and townspeople assumed her son was the murderer. Why?

This murder took place in an era where being gay was proof of being deviant and therefore he was an easy target for law enforcement.

But the years would uncover a much more sinister story. Until the night of the murder, the Park family seemed to have an almost perfect life. For fifty years they were the owners of "The Press Argus" newspaper.

Hugh Park was connected politically and his wife, Ruie Ann, was a local historian, a journalist, and a teacher. They had a biological son who Ruie Ann thought was brilliant and could do no wrong. The couple also adopted a daughter, named Linda who seemed to become the father's favorite.

Their golden life ended in divorce and the children remained with Ruie Ann, who stayed in the marital home, becoming bitter and more and more demanding of the daughter who couldn't seem to up her mother's expectations.

Fast forward to adulthood...

In comparison, adopted daughter, Linda, seemed to have a much more normal life. She graduated from college, married a lawyer and moved a few hours away from her overbearing mother.

So, if it wasn't the 'degenerate' son, who killed Ruie-Ann Park? If you don't already know the ultimate outcome if this murder case, the answer will surprise you.

I enjoyed listening to this audiobook and thought that the author did a terrific job of describing both the Park family's history as well as the complex family dynamics.

True Crime Body Of Proof Love Triangle Murder

This is the account of the true crime story recounting the murder, evidence collection, trial of Jessica O'Grady in May 2006. In the aftermath of trial we learn of questionable procedures and an overzealous sheriff.

I thought that it was going to be a mystery so I was a little bit bummed when I found out within the first 15 minutes "whodunit"

However, this is a meticulous accounting of the CSI procedures, a potentially shady sheriff. I held on and continued to listen and I am really happy that I did.

The book cast a light in different directions and the end Well you'll just have to listen to it!

Kevin Pierce is an excellent narrator who kept the material intriguing. While the descriptions of CSI protocol in recovering evidence could have been dull, he was able to engage and it made me stay interested.

I don't normally like to listen to real-life criminal books, it feels wrong to me. Especially given the victim was a young woman torn from the headlines kind of book. However, *I agreed to listen to the book in exchange for this review, so I did. It is a book for anyone who is interested in true crime &/or taken from the headlines.

Note: After the description of Jessica O'Grady's violent murder there is nothing to warn about.

Historic investigation, excellently narrated

What did you like best about this story?

It's exciting and suspenseful. Also it has historical importance. It was the first time investigators were allowed to bug the chambers of high-level judges. Until then, there was no way to get at them. The man who did this was the same man who wrote the book: Terrance Hake. And he was an amateur! He knew nothing about how to go undercover to ferret out corruption. His life was at stake. He learned as he went along. And as a result, something like 100 judges and lawyers and other court officers were arrested, indicted, and spent jail time.

Aside from the fact that this book is so historically interesting, it's also hard to put down because it's so exciting. Danger is everywhere. Until the end, you didn't really know if the good guys (the FBI and other agencies) will win or not. Also there are surprises thrown at you, which I won't mention because it would spoil your enjoyment of the story.

What does Charles Constant bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Constant is a hell of a good narrator. He knows how to build suspense with his delivery when it's appropriate, and how to create interesting characters with his voicings. Also, you can tell the difference between the various characters because of his skill with different vocal nuances. I did read the printed book first, and this Audible version adds so much more. It's like getting twice the enjoyment out of a single book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but since it's 10 hours long, no way.

I've listened to this narrator Charles Constant before, and he's always good, with both fiction and non-fiction. But IMHO I especially love to hear him read historical material. His narration of the Bismark book was first class. And in this Greylord book too, he knows when to give drama to a scene, without being melodramatic. Not all narrators can do this.

A story that disturbs, yet, you relish in each twist.

John Ferak weaves a tale of crime and its investigation, of bad guys and good cops, good guys and bad cops, and how easily things can go very, very wrong. I found myself compelled to postpone other tasks so I could listen to Rich Grimshaw's rich baritone as he led me through this story. CSI fans will love this work. Highly recommended!

Interesting first half, but the end drags. Despite the summary, there really isn't much of a twist in this story.

Amazing, Frightening, Horrific

Would you listen to Is He Dead? again? Why?

I have read the book and now listened to the audio version I am not certain i can make it through it again. When I was finished i couldn't relax, I had to walk off the stress the story created for me

What did you like best about this story?

It was so down to earth, the cursing and sexual content were rather strong but so realistic.

In a story like this it's hard to side with anyone except the good guys, but Andrew performed the Tom character very well scary even

Once I started listening to this book I did not stop until it was over. The narrator made such a horrific story even more frightening. Very graphic and very well well written. How those to kids were able to survive for so long. Thank God for cops like Rick Drew

This is a true-crime story about 2 children, Amanda and Robert, who have been abused for 10 years. When their stepdad, whos been in their lives for the last decade, ends up dead the police get involved and start asking questions. The book is the account of the investigation, statements, and a behind-the-scenes type view of police work. It is very much a statement, not a made up story. A warning to any that may be sensitive to hearing of abuse to others, you need to think about it before reading/listening to this book, because you might have problems at some parts of the book. Having a law enforcement background, I think this is well done.

Editor Needed

I have read just four short stories in this book and have already come across four typos and three punctuation errors. Ms Ramsland, you need a new editor.

Update: I originally gave the book two stars, but I am halfway through the book and have also found at least three instances of garbled "sentences" missing multiple words. I give up! There is better to be had in the true crime genre than this book. Even if it were free, I wouldn't bother reading it.

Interesting stories. Sad because they are unsolved. That McElroy story under the Bully. man some people get thrown in jail after 1 offense. That guy was Teflon for a while.
