Today's episode comes directly from Chuck's keynote presentation at the 2019 Midwest Dental Assembly.
What if you had 100% engagement by every team member, and you could depend on keeping people 10 times longer than the norm. That's what this topic is about today. It's about the participation age. The participation age is basically about two things; participation and sharing. In the emerging world of the participation age, people want to share and they want to participate in building a great practice, not for you, but with you. They want to share the results of having done that.

Today, we're going to talk with Dr. MaryJane Hanlon about personal growth laws, the laws of life. She has 10 things to share today that she's accumulated over her years of working as a dentist, and just living life.
Having more than a passing interest in dentistry as a young girl, Dr. MaryJane Hanlon began her career at 14 years old in an orthodontic office as an extra set of hands for the assistants. From there, she worked as a dental assistant, ran the front desk of an office, became a dental hygienist and worked in the profession for 15 years followed by dental school to finally fulfill her long-term goal of becoming a dentist.
Currently she is the Associate Dean of Clinic Affairs at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine where she manages the clinical operations across the school. In addition, she is actively involved in organized dentistry both at the state and national level. Nationally she serves on the Membership Committee of the American Dental Association and locally she serves as the current Vice President of the Massachusetts Dental Society.
Today we are talking with Mike Buckner and want to talk specifically about how to use text in regards to patient retention. We alluded to it in the last podcast with Mike about how how we build relationships, and that that email and phone are things that people are opting out of, but the text is still working. But, you need to make sure you're using it in the most personalized way.
Mike Buckner has been working in the Dental Technology Field for 8 years. He is currently the Director of Business Development for Weave and continues to share with offices how to stay relevant in today's overwhelming communication channels. He has twin boys at home that have enough energy to power a city, and a wife that knows just how to handle them.
Today we are talking about how to go from manager/employee, to leader-leader so that we're all in this together. It's one of the hallmarks of the participation age. We've talked about the 12 tools of the participation age, how every one of those tools is specifically designed to take us from a top down bottom up relationship structure to a horizontal relationship where we're all just working together to get to the mission, and we're all working as friends and community.
Why would you want to get started as a dental speaker? Vanessa finds that many dental professionals get to a point in their career where they feel pulled toward sharing the information that they've learned. Over the years, they've perfected different strategies or processes and they feel they have something to give back. Whether that be through speaking or consulting or both, whether they want to make money with it or not, whether they want to create a whole new business entity or just be able to speak occasionally and give back to the industry.

Today I want to talk to you about three things brain research says causes us to actually change something. We learn things, but we don't apply them. Why we have two choices, and we don't choose the one that would push us forward?

Join us on today's show where Dr. MaryJane Hanlon shares her journey in the dental profession, her challenges and her successes. Great insight!

Today I'd like to talk to you about why victory and defeat have no place in your practice. We want to get rid of the idea that victory and defeat even have a place in your practice in any way, shape, or form. Every situation in life, we deserve only one response. Fascinating. Whether it's a victory or defeat, respond first with, fascinating. Then, respond with, how did it happen?
If the person who was defeated in some way started with fascinating, how did that happen? Immediately, they're trying to figure out how to keep from repeating that again. And if someone who thinks they want it, they perceive it as a victory.
Today I'm speaking with Mike Buckner about marketing and a different spin on marketing. We talk about how the best marketing you can ever do is to deliver your services incredibly well. How can we break through the "noise" today to connect and communicate with our patients? Mike is sharing with us some amazing ways to do so.
