    Publisher's Summary:
Think of iron, and two names immediately spring to mind. The first is Andrew Carnegie, the man who went from Scotland to the United States. Anticipating the need for iron in American industry, he started manufacturing it at lower costs and became one of the world's richest men. This was in the 1890s. The second is Lakshmi Mittal. Carnegie only anticipated the needs of the U.S., but Lakshmi Mittal foresaw the global demand for iron.
Mittal would take any iron manufacturing unit in any corner of the globe and, if it was making losses, he would turn it around. He would buy up the factory and make its foundations as strong as iron itself. Every single factory that Mittal took over started to make profits as soon as his Midas hand touched it.
His factories produce more iron than the entire production of India's iron-smelting facilities. How did he achieve this? His is no magic or miracle. He used hard work and self-confidence. Because of this, he has managed repeatedly to raise production higher than the capacity of the factory.
Lakshmi Mittal is today the fifth-richest man in the world. But this high-achieving Indian does not own a single iron-manufacturing unit in India. The story of this super achiever, written by N. Chokkan, is certain to amaze the listener as he hears it.

    Language: English
    Release date: 05-16-06
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 430 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
After growing up on Manhattan's Upper East Side, Cooper felt a magnetic pull toward the unknown. If he could keep moving, and keep exploring, he felt he could stay one step ahead of his past, including the fame surrounding his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, and the tragic early deaths of his father and older brother.
But recently, during the course of one extraordinary, tumultuous year, it became impossible for him to continue to separate his work from his life. From the tsunami in Sri Lanka to the war in Iraq to the starvation in Niger and ultimately to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and Mississippi, Cooper gives us a firsthand glimpse of the devastation that takes place. Writing with vivid memories of his childhood and early career as a roving correspondent, Cooper reveals for the first time how deeply affected he has been by the wars, disasters, and tragedies he has witnessed, and why he continues to be drawn to some of the most perilous places on earth.
Striking, heartfelt, and utterly engrossing, Dispatches from the Edge is an unforgettable memoir that takes us behind the scenes of the cataclysmic events of our age and allows us to see them through the eyes of one of America's most trusted, fearless, and pioneering reporters.
    Editorial Reviews:
Anderson Cooper has a pleasant, distinctive, and recognizable voice, but that's not the reason he's effective as the narrator of this memoir of war, disasters, and survival. The book is a compelling listen because Cooper is a talented writer, filling his text with riveting images and compelling phrases. The images speak for themselves. But Cooper's narration is not without energy and emotion. He parcels them out, using them for effect at just the right moments. Cooper moves effectively between reporting on the cataclysmic events of (from the tsunami through Hurricane Katrina) and reflecting on his childhood and early professional career. The audio concludes with an interesting interview with the author.
    Critic Reviews:
"Cooper is an intelligent, passionate man." (Publishers Weekly)

    Dispatches from the Inner Self
Like many highly successful people, CNN reporter Anderson Cooper is driven to compensate for inner conflicts. Unlike many successful people, he reveals this discord in a best selling book. Some of these conflicts are fully disclosed, such as putting himself in dangerous situations to compensate for two childhood tragedies. Others are superficially alluded to, inviting the reader to do some interpreting.
Cooper's book, "Dispatches from the Edge" at first glance appears to be an autobiography. But only a small part of his life is covered in any detail. In fact, he claims to have forgotten most of his childhood before age ten. He clearly remembers the death of his father when Cooper was ten and the suicide of his older brother when Cooper was 21. Maybe too clearly.
Cooper tells us that he has few vices except for one: he's a workaholic. He enjoys the company of many associates but has no really close friends. He can't relax and is in his prime on the chase for a story. If the story is a war, famine or natural disaster where he could be killed, all the better. All of this culminates as he reports on the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina. Seeing how people cope in the worst situations gave Cooper some insight into his inner self.

    Thought I would like but....
Love the initial phone call that started it all and had hoped the book would be more about that story an the first of the book was but now I'm getting bogged down with the principles they established, followed and why they implemented them. Not a fun read.
Interesting story but nothing new here
I like stories of people who build businesses and while I am unfamiliar with this company I took a chance on the story. The storyline is interesting how they got the company turned around and built it into what it is today. The timeless principles are nothing you havent read but hey these ladies are successful and it is a nice read but no big lessons just a good success stroy.

    Title: The Hearsts
    Subtitle: Father and Son
Author: William Randolph Hearst, Jack Casserly
    Narrator: Jeff Riggenbach
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 12 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-15-05
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 36 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Business Leaders
    Publisher's Summary:
As founder of the largest U.S. prewar media empire, William Randolph Hearst, Sr., forever changed the face of American journalism by using his newspapers to aid in forcing the outbreak of the Spanish-American War. As a public figure he was larger than life, first as ambitious congressman, then as reclusive yet active businessman in the famous castle that rises above the Pacific at San Simeon. The elder Hearst was known for his extravagance as well as his long affair with Marion Davies, images that were highly embellished in Orson Welles' reproach of the Hearst persona, Citizen Kane.
In The Hearsts: Father and Son, William Randolph Hearst, Jr., and co-author Jack Casserly tell the extraordinary story of an American family from the gold-diggings of California to the present Hearst media empire. They also profile a cavalcade of reporters and columnists who became the stars of the Hearst newspapers, and portray the colorful New York nightlife of the 1930s and 1940s.
    Critic Reviews:
    "Brisk, unpretentious, opinionated." (Publishers Weekly)

    Terrible reading
Sorry, I have been to the Hearst Castle several times and was truly looking forward to this book. Unfortunately the reader is the worst I've ever heard. Do yourself a favor and listen to some excerpts first. He reads way to fast and with a completely dispassionate tone.
    Performance detracts from copy
As a journalist, the story is fascinating and draws you in - such an interesting family and fascinating era(s). Oh to have worked during that time! The performance of the material is very distracting at times, though. Mr. Riggenbach needs to take a breath and some of his mispronunciations are distracting!
    Mundane and superficial
This book manages to make an interesting topic thoroughly uninteresting--and if you stick with it, increasingly annoying. The problem is the modest literary ability (even with the help of a co-author) of William Randolph Hearst Jr., a basically boring, uninsightful account of what should have been a fascintating story, and a narrator who does nothing to improve the mundane and superficial narrative. A bad book by a spoiled rich kid who apparently learned very little worth knowing in his 80+ years of life.

Nothing about driving growth or passion here!
This is the most disappointing book I have come across audible so far. The book is supposed to be about passion and driving growth in today's internet driven world, instead the author gives you advice on things that really should be norms in business today. If you are a shady type of person that lacks business ethics and values money over your customers then this is for you. As for passion, if the author would start with a more passionate voice maybe I would have at least finished the book, but the dry monotone reminded me of my grade 8 physics master who used to lull the whole class to sleep. I had to turn it off. There is nothing about driving growth or passion here, instead its a pitch about how good Schwab is and how ethical they are, which takes me back to the first point I made, if you lack ethics in the way you do business and want to change that then this book is for you.

    Publisher's Summary:
The 1970s were known for free love and experimentation. Few cared if you were gay, straight, bisexual or transgender. It was the era of "sex, drugs & rock 'n' roll". In the midst of all this appeared a woman who had turned the head of Al Capone, married into the famous Maybelline company, and possessed more than enough beauty, magnetism and allure to make men do most anything. When Evelyn F. Williams and her enigmatic young male companion arrived in Hot Springs, Arkansas, they took over the famous town in a whirlwind of lights, rock 'n' roll, cameras, beautiful people and a grand lifestyle. They created a media frenzy wherever they went - until jealousy and resentment led to stories of orgies, twisted sex, drugs, Mafia hits...and the mystery of the Maybelline Queen's fiery death, which some still call an unsolved murder. This is the uncut version of that high-living time written by the young man who lived it with Evelyn the man who was supposed to never be heard from again Danné Montague King, aka The Maybelline Prince, who went on to found a skincare dynasty of his own. Hobnobbing with decadent bluebloods, politicians, movie stars and social activists, Danné amassed a large and loyal following the world over.

    The Maybelline Prince
The Maybelline Prince: Danne Montague King
A mysterious fire and the carnage are irreparable. The site horrific and the end result would take the life of the home and the person who lived in it. As author, hairdresser and cosmetic king, Danne Montague-King relives that experience, describes what he saw and takes readers back to the beginning where life was complicated yet simple and one manâs passions are revealed. Imagine shopping with stars like Diana Ross and Jane Russell for their own personal wigs. The setting is Newport Beach in the 60âs an exciting time. Danne lived a life so many envied and would have loved. Living in the home of Maybelline heiress, Evelyn F. Williams. Walking directly into his shop changed the entire course of his life forever. Living with Evelyn as her friend, adopted nephew, companion and the one person she relied on and trusted, when she died in a strange fire, rumors flew and his reputation became tarnished and many thought that he was into drugs, associated with the mafia and unusual sex. This is an outstanding tribute to an amazing and wonderful woman that everyone will want to read. The Maybelline Prince is not just the story of Danne and Evelyn but the story of Maybelline itself, a roller rink, helping youngsters stay out of trouble and an era that was filled with excitement, drugs, the birth of my favorite music, rockânâroll and donât forget Woodstock.
Evelyn Williams had her own style and personality. She was headstrong, vibrant and at times you might even say vulnerable to the whims of others. Creating a place where kids could skate, put on shows and express themselves she became quite an icon among the younger set. Living in Hot Springs, Arkansas both Evelyn and Danne took the town and the people by storm in their own flamboyant ways.

    Publisher's Summary:
Alan Cumming grew up in the grip of a man who held his family hostage, someone who meted out violence with a frightening ease, who waged a silent war with himself that sometimes spilled over onto everyone around him. That man was Alan's father, Alex Cumming.
Alex was the dark, enigmatic heart of Cumming family life. But he was not the only mystery. Alan's maternal grandfather, Tommy Darling, had disappeared to the Far East after the Second World War. The last time Alan's mother saw her father she was eight years old. When she was 13, the family was informed that he had died in an accidental shooting.
Curious to explore this second mystery, Alan committed to filming an episode of the BBC's Who Do You Think You Are? Then out of the blue, his father, who Alan and his brother had not seen or spoken to for more than a decade, called. He had a secret he had to share, one that would shock his son to his very core and set in motion a journey that would change Alan's life forever.
At times suspenseful, at times deeply moving, but always brave and honest, Not My Father's Son is a powerful story about embracing the best aspects of the past and triumphantly pushing the darkness aside.

This book is honest and touching
This books explains abuse and the effects of abuse in the most honest way. It sheds light on the dark places. It exposes and reveal the unspoken in the most beautiful and strangely caring way. The scariest thing about abuse is the silence that follows. It's the silence that makes it commonplace and acceptable. Allan Cumming is a courageous man
    Wonderful
A wonderful moving book that navigates the pain of abuse and the joy of love, life and family. I have loved Alan Cumming as a character actor I now love him as a person. A beautiful book.
A really great book, from start to finish
What a heartfelt story. Mary Darling - such a beautiful beautiful name. Thank you Alan.
Something in this book for everyone
This is a book for anyone who has grown up with an abusive parent, anyone who loves a mystery, all those researching their family history, and everyone who has despaired and found the way back or is still looking for the way back. And for anyone who just likes a well-written entertaining read, with tears and laughter along the way. Congratulations to Alan Cumming for so openly documenting the milestones in his life, from his harrowing childhood to his eventual discovery of what is best left in his past and what he can take into the future. The story is beautifully told, the then and now format perfect for unfolding the inevitably converging dramas, introducing new facts as they come to light in the now chapters, all the while maintaining the tension in the build up to the denouement. The book is all the better for being narrated by the author who conveys all the emotions associated with the story, and his soft Scots accent is delightful. Thanks, Alan, I suspect a lot of readers will be inspired by your story.
    Enjoyable
I really enjoyed this book. Alan's voice is very easy to listen to and as I didn't know much about his life, I was surprised at each new chapter. I only really knew him from The Good Wife
