Enjoyable, clean romance!

Enjoyed this clean romance! The story entertained me so much I read the other books in this series. Sometimes I just want to relax, read, and let a nice clean story take me away for a little while. This book did not disappoint! However, a few parts regarding the father's behavior seemed inconsistent with the girls life before and leading up to where the story begins, thus my giving four stars instead of five.

BOTTOM LINE: Clean, enjoyable romance with few surprises!

A second helping of Cripple Creek

The second title in the Cripple Creek series introduces us to the oldest Sinclair sister - Ida.

Her dream, to go into business and work in the stock market, is at logaheads with the rest of the community and she very quickly becomes an object of scorn. Determined to stick to her guns, she determines to have no time for romamce or her sisters insistent matchmaking.

Enter the gentle character of Tucker Raines and all that slowly begins to change.

I enjoyed this second installment in the Sinclair sisters saga. Especially appreciate a proper series approach that sees the previous focus characters appear in more than token mention.

Enjoyable Read

I picked up book three of this series from a thrift store and ordered books one and two so I could read the story from the beginning. I am so glad I did as I enjoyed the author's characters, plots, and writing style very much. The three volumes depict the lives of a father and each of his two sons. When I finished the series, it went back on my shelf to be read again. I will definitely try other books by this author.

Murphy's Rainbow

Katie Murphy has just watched her husband die in her arms and the wagon train they were on, left her. She has nowhere to go and is taken to the closest town by the leader of the wagon train. Grieving, but still independent enough to know that she has to work, Katie finds employment as a cook for the local saloon and bawdyhouse. Katie cooks during the day and dances with cowboys at night for money. On one such night, Katie comes face to face with a hard-edged rancher who offers her employment as his housekeeper/nanny. Katie doesn't hesitate in her agreement and they leave for his ranch.

Jonathan Cantrell needs a woman to take care of his home and two sons. When his partner tells him about Katie, he travels to the saloon and takes a peek. What he sees is a lovely woman unlike any saloon girl he has ever seen and knows that she will be perfect for what he has in mind. Getting her alone takes a bit of convincing but soon Jonathan puts his proposition before Katie and she readily agrees.

Kate and Jonathan soon become friends of a sort, but there is something brewing in the air. Could it be love?

Murphy's Rainbow by Carolyn Lampman was a highly poignant and very sweet romance. I savored Katie and Jonathan coming to grips with their feelings towards each other because when it happened, the results were glorious. I enjoyed Murphy's Rainbow for its humor as well; the antics of Jonathan's children brought a smile to my face. I was more than pleased when Jonathan and Katie finally confessed their feelings for each other, to each other. I love nothing better than a happy ending and I got that and more.

Is Something Missing?

The book is well written, and intriguing, but a little confusing as it jumps back and forth from the character's era to the historian's era. As I got deeper into the story, and really hooked, it ended abruptly ... or am I missing something? It was rather disappointing, but the story did not seem complete, it just ended without a conclusion. It was, unfortunately, very unsatisfying.

Perfect listen

Spellbinding,enchanting,and in places heartwrenching but full of unexpected twists with layer upon layer of interwoven stories. Not my usual read/listen but I am so glad I did - can't wait to listen again and again.

Awful text formatting

Shipping was fairly timely. The book itself was in very good shape. Better than expected.

But the reason this is rated only two stars is that the layout of the text is awful. Almost no margin or gutter and no indenting of new paragraphs. Makes it not only hard to read but also doesnât invite the reader in for pleasurable experience. If you can, get a different addition.

A quaint town

I wasn't ready to leave Winesboro when the last story finished. Layers of the town are revealed slowly in the collection of stories.

Wings, feathers -- fingers -- voice.

One of my favorite books, it was the breakthrough of Anderson as a lion of his generation and the one that followed. It remains an important book although some think that is because it is a period piece. Not so: it is classic precisely because it is an effective literary barometer of human behaviors -- and the power of observation by the invisible young.

Interesting read, from another century.

An open window into the mind of an author from a century ago. Reminiscent of "Spoon River Anthology", but an interesting read, nevertheless.

Great read, but not a light one

Byer's research and writing style shine in this 400+ page tale about the human desires we all have and the lengths we go to in order to find/fuel those desires. The story is packed full (perhaps too full) with zanny, earthy and legally insane characters that will keep the reader anxiously waiting for their favorite storyline to continue. The search for Planet X (Pluto) is, at times, a side note, the vehicle used to move the story along, and yet it is still intriguing enough to keep up a decent core narration. At times, the supposed main character, Clyde, is left in the dust by far more interesting and dialogue rich characters, which can be confusing, and yet at the same time Clyde, who ultimately discovers Pluto, is perhaps the least interesting of them all so the reader doesn't much mind his sidekick statis. My only true complaint is that the beauty of the stars and the fascinating and complex mystery of the heavens are not fully appreciated by the author, who reduces space to mathematics and apathic characterizations (though, of course, astronomy is largely done through mathematics, it is not what usually captures the imagination). I enjoyed the book overall and would recommend it to most people. However, it could be unnecessarily "heavy" and slow moving and most of the meaning is not on the surface of the text and for this reason I would not recommend it to everyone. The search for Pluto is, when viewed as a metaphor, far more interesting than anything tangible.

This is one of the most engaging novels that I have read in a long time. Anyone potentially put off by the astronomy theme should reconsider as this book delves into much, much more. Fully realized settings, sympathetic characters, and a very clever writing style all made me read this book in great big chunks. My only complain, without giving away any of the plot points, would be that the author tends to overstate some of his symbols and ideas where subtext and a more nuanced touch would have done just as well.
