I try to be fair in all my reviews so I always re-evaluate myself before writing a review in hopes I keep objectivity. I am an autistic man who was told he is and was retarded or defective all my life. When I read about otherwise normal people in poverty making really bad investment and or realestate decisions, even I wouldn't make I immediately think WOW they are so beyond retarded. It's taken me a while to realize that good people of sound mind often make horrible decisions I know enough to avoid.

The main character in The Great American Foreclosure Story made some really horrible decisions that I would have never made. If you read The Great American Foreclosure Story with only the cold light of logic as your guide, the main character sounds like a damn fool who deserved to lose her money. It is only a compassionate reading of The Great American Foreclosure Story that unlocks the human side of the foreclosure.

It's just like a new book. It's in brilliant condition and the price is also reasonable. One of the best second-hand book I ever bought.

back to work in the "golden years"

I can't get this book out of my mind. I had never heard of the Vita Needle Company, but I now see it as an alternate path to a meaningful old age in our culture. My bachelor uncle spent his last ten years in a nursing home, hungry for engagement and meaning in his life. My mother lived her last years in a "retirement community", a not unhappy place, but one in which her age cohort seemed to me to be segregated from our society at large. Isn't there a better alternative? The author, a cultural anthropologist and college professor, spent five years researching this book, part of that time actually working on the line with the seniors. She shares intimate portraits of the employees, of why they are working and what they have gained from this opportunity. She explores whether the company is exploiting the fact that , because these employees are old enough to receive Medicare, it need not pay for health insurance or other benefits. The majority of the employees are part time at relatively low pay, BUT they do receive a generous Christmas bonus that is based on how well the company has done that year (a sort of profit sharing), and their hours are entirely flexible. Some do work because they need the extra money, but many work in order to feel useful again and for the camaraderie they develop with fellow workers. They admit to feeling like a family. The factory, a family owned business begun during the Depression, is successful, despite the fact that they employ more workers than needed to allow for some to be off at any one time, and despite the fact that machines could possibly do some of the tasks. A German film company made a documentary , "Pensioners Inc." , about the company because , in Europe, after retirement age, people can rarely find work.

Wild east, a country rebuilding

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. I enjoyed this book. it takes place primarily in 1996-97, and was written in 2001. Reading this after the most recent events in the Ukraine/Crimea, it is astounding how so many things can happen.

The opulence and the inflation and the fortunes won, lost, and held on to for dear life... quite compelling.

I know very little about banking, and these portions are definitely confusing and harder to follow, but overall, this book was a good read.

Any additional comments?

This book is an interesting look into a country that has been a bit of an enigma to me. The narrator was a good choice as well. I think I would have wished a bit more personal touches to this book, but that's a minor quibble in a suspenseful chronicle... I can't imagine a life where hefty bribes are the only way to get things done.

Ferguson Hits His Stride

I really enjoy listening to the author on the news and talk shows. Very interesting guy who doesn't overreach in the interest of getting air time. From what I can tell he works hard and has mastered a fairly rare combination of fields. History, economics, and writing, to name three. This is a gentleman who beyond the pedigree has written books that survey in sometimes painful depth his field of study. I have tried to read his prior books and just couldn't get through them. Great material, great writing, but really boring tedious stuff to listen to. This book, however, I could not put down.

I think the author has some very good points. You'll find a bunch of negative reviews because of the last few pages of the book, he gives a rather hefty slam of Obama's "you didn't build that" speech. He really could have done without those few pages and I think you would find Republicans and Democrats interested in finding a solution to our country and world's problems finding common ground with many of the ideas in this book.

I am somewhat off-putted by the frameworks that the author uses. I am used to more of the more systematic Stuart Mill, etc frameworks and he always seems to have some rather higher level "fresher" way of reframing what are probably issues that could fit within these other frameworks. Interesting, refreshing, thought provoking but leaves me wondering how this lines up to historical methods of analysis. And where did the ideas come for these nouveau analyses? Might be footnoted, but that is a hazard of audio books. Anyway, many of the reviews at Amazon capture the specifics. I enjoyed this book and if you haven't read the author yet, would highly recommend starting here. If you have like me tried an not been able to get through the prior works, perhaps like me you'll find a gem here. If you're reading and listening to the author right now, you may be a little disappointed as the book is a bit of an overview of a number of speeches / discussions he has had recently. Might not be enough new material to interest. I really enjoyed it.

Great description of what ails America & the West

With reservations this is one of the best short listens you can make. Those limits relate to Ferguson's history and his place therein. In short, his model of the future means an extension of the past, by better management of the present.

What did you like best about The Ultimate Obama Survival Guide? What did you like least?

There basically three parts to the book. Part 1: Obama does everything to kill/destroy small businesses; Part 2: to survive Obama's quest to destroy small businesses. . . . start a small business. ??? (makes sense, doesn't it?);Part 3: if you worth one million, two million or better yet a cool one billion dollars, then buy gold, 1000 acres land, profitable farms, authentic arts (ie. Picasso or Kandinsky), private islands, etc. While at it, the author provides "very useful" recommendation to build yourself a shelter and stock it with "bare" necessities such as: gold, 1000 acres land, profitable farms, authentic arts (ie.
