Austrian classic now in English
A charming and serious book by a Viennese-American journalist. Praised by Clive James in Cultural Amnesia (2007) and now available in English from Ariadne Press.
A masterpiece, the funniest german book i know, but also a profound and complete description of an era.
The book portrays a time and a place that is virtually lost from memory: the 100 years betweeen Napoleon and WWI in central europe, a shared cultural space politically contained in the austrian empire, but culturally as varied as europe can be. That period and time that are lost because of the shock of WWII obscures all that happened before.
The title couldnt be more appropriate: the book is a sequence of anecdotes from Torbergs environment, the jewish upper class, around the 1900' and captures the whole era with amazing completeness. Even now, in Vienna, the present is permeated by the remains of that era, and if you go to Vienna after reading this book, you will see a few things that many locals dont see anymore :)
