Love, Death and Obsession
Bruges-la-Morte is a novel, written by the Belgian author Georges Rodenbach, considered a masterpiece of symbolist literature.
In short, it is the story of Huges Viane, a forty-year-old widower, who lost his wife five years before. Even though so many years have passed, he is still mourning for her death and struggles to keep her memory alive. His solitary and monotonous life changes when he meets, on the streets of Bruges, a woman who looks identical with his deceased wife. Since Hugues sees Jane Scott - an actress and dancer - he becomes stupefied by the physical resemblance between the two women. Jane's presence not only makes Hugues fortify even more the 'cult' of his lost wife, but also forces his mind to enter in a game of appearances, pathological obsession and deceit.
The title refers to the city of Bruges, which is lacking of life - almost dead - an inert and dull place, with canals and deserted streets, where people gather only for religious processions and also gossip about Hugues' immoral affair. Here, Bruges is not only the background or the stage for Hugues' story, but a character of its own in this novel. The protagonist and the city display the same dark inward atmosphere or feelings. For example, when Hugues has a premonition of death, the swans in the canals begin to sing.
Bruges-la-Morte is written twenty years before Thomas Mann's Death in Venice and it is a pity that many people hadn't heard of Rodenbach's masterpiece. The text is written in a plain and simple French and the narration will make you more and more curious to read what happens next.
Therefore, buy this short novel, make yourself comfortable and enter the mysterious and decadent world of Bruges-la-Morte.
Rodenbach has given us an excellent, précis novel that is rich in meaning
This is an important example of French symboliste literature. As such, the imagery is exquisite. This prose symbolism is much more attainable than symboliste poetry, which is sometimes hard to decipher. Rodenbach has given us an excellent, précis novel that is rich in meaning.

A good novel
It was lovely to read in French about some of the most beautiful places in Bruges within the context of a novel with a fair plot and an elegant narrative style.
Fair novel
The book was a bit too short.
Descriptions of the city of Bruges was very poor depite the statement that the city was a major player in the story.
