Title: Columbia Workshop, Volume 3

Author: Radio Archives

Narrator: full cast

Format: Original Recording

Length: 6 hrs and 53 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-01-16

Publisher: Dreamscape Media, LLC

Genres: Nostalgia Radio, Comedy & Variety

Publisher's Summary:

When Columbia Workshop debuted on CBS in 1936, the concept of network radio was still in its infancy, just 10 years old. Many within the radio business were undecided about various aspects of this new medium, including whether or not it could yield anything of value, something that can be seen as art and not simply a forgettable derivative of popular culture. The concept of Columbia Workshop, conceived by Irving Reis, was essentially to try new innovations on radio, to push the medium's boundaries. Although early shows struggled to strike a balance between what the actors and the production crew contributed to the programs, the best shows from the program focused on both the cutting edge work of sound techs and producers, as well as the ability of performers to push themselves in ways other shows did not require them to. Extreme attention was paid to every aspect of the show's production.

Title: Curtain Time, Volume 1

Author: Radio Archives

Narrator: full cast

Format: Original Recording

Length: 9 hrs and 52 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-01-16

Publisher: Dreamscape Media, LLC

Genres: Nostalgia Radio, Comedy & Variety

Publisher's Summary:

Though the romantic drama anthology nature of Curtain Time usually eschewed any kind of "star", actor Olan Soule portrayed most of the male leads on the program, often opposite actresses like Betty Lou Gerson and Louise Fitch. (Soule later graduated to Nighter in 1943, frequently acting opposite Barbara Luddy.) Directed by Blair Walliser, with music by Henry Weber and the announcing chores handled by Don Gordon, the production offered plenty of the same fare as featured on First Nighter: light and innocuous boy-girl romances that were always lighthearted and entertaining. The show continued to become more and more like its predecessor, First Nighter, adding an usher to the proceedings who would show listeners to their seats in "seventh row center". The featured performers during this run were Harry Elders and Nannette Sergeant, with Chicago pros like Betty Winkler, Hope Summers, Art Van Harvey, and Arthur Peterson providing solid support.

Title: Claudia, Volume 13

Author: James Thurber

Narrator: full cast

Format: Original Recording

Length: 5 hrs and 39 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-01-16

Publisher: Dreamscape Media, LLC

Genres: Nostalgia Radio, Comedy & Variety

Publisher's Summary:

The tale of Claudia and David Naughton, newlyweds, just beginning their married life. Young, enthusiastic, and very much in love, they weren't suffering from any medical maladies or suspicions of infidelity. Instead, they were simply facing the many challenges of any new marriage - finding an apartment, getting used to each other's quirks, and learning to live together on a daily basis. Lacking many of the characteristics of a traditional soap opera, Claudia didn't offer the anguish and heartbreak that typified such long-running soaps as Valiant Lady, Backstage Wife, and Ma Perkins - and, being sponsored by Coca-Cola, it even lacked the traditional sponsorship of a soap company. But the very elements it was lacking quickly became its strengths: with very few of the 'tune in tomorrow' hooks that most soaps used to lure listeners back the next day, people returning to Claudia instead came back for the interesting, fully developed characters and the light-hearted banter between them.

Title: Dr. Christian

Author: Radio Archives

Narrator: full cast

Format: Original Recording

Length: 5 hrs and 58 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-01-16

Publisher: Dreamscape Media, LLC

Genres: Nostalgia Radio, Comedy & Variety

Publisher's Summary:

An underrated and long-running family series, Dr. Christian comes across today more as a quiet anthology of small-town life than as a straight medical drama, bringing the people of the small town of River's End to life through the eyes of the kindly Dr. Paul Christian. As portrayed by actor Jean Hersholt, Dr. Christian can perhaps best be described as a male Molly Goldberg with a medical degree; a gentle and well-meaning meddler who always manages to lead you in the right direction, whether you want to be led there or not. The series involved Christian and his nurse Judy Price in a wide range of situations in the lives of Rivers' End residents - family crises, ill-starred romances, and social or ethical dilemmas.

Title: Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street

Author: Radio Archives

Narrator: full cast

Format: Original Recording

Length: 6 hrs and 52 mins

Language: English

Release date: 10-31-16

Publisher: Dreamscape Media, LLC

Genres: Nostalgia Radio, Comedy & Variety

Publisher's Summary:

Everyone on the program is jokingly addressed as either 'professor' or 'doctor', thereby attempting to give the impression that they have a certain lofty, highbrow distinction. However, Gene Hamilton contradicts this image when he states that the Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street is out to "give culture its lumps", which it does, in a very delightfully musical, and humorous, way. In the middle of the show, guest commentators do such things as attempting to play an accordion under water, and an NBC page introduces a corny new song he has just written, which will never, ever make the charts. But, of course, the main attractions are the wonderful Dixieland band arrangements of Paul Lavalle and Henry Levine, which keep everything jumping.

A program that took the best of what had come before it and succeeded even further in production, performance, and storytelling actually debuted at the end of Radio's Golden Age. A direct descendant of the Columbia Workshop, CBS Radio Workshop not only continued to push boundaries in terms of utilizing story, music, voice and more in exciting, modern ways, it broke new ground in radio drama. From having author Aldous Huxley narrate the adaptation of his Brave New World for the show's debut, to producing an interview with William Shakespeare, to turning a stirring folk ballad into a mix of rhyme. With a performance by William Conrad in "The Legend of Jimmy Blue Eyes", the CBS Radio Workshop set the standard for modern audio drama. The man behind CBS Radio Workshop, which debuted in 1956, was William Froug.
