Another Absolutely Marvelous...

Great Courses lecture series! My graduate and post graduate degrees are in the Humanities, but I also have a minor degree in psychology with an accent on the physiological and perceptual aspects of consciousness, and I have continued my study in this latter area through the years. Thus, I can tell you that the material presented in Vishton's lecture series is scientifically accurate, presented clearly enough for the layman and is interesting enough for someone who has done much study in this field. I listened to Grim's lecture series on the Philosophy Of Mind (also in the Great Courses selections) before this one, and I highly recommend that they be taken together. Much of the material dovetails in a way to make both series much richer and more comprehensible.

Easy to perceive at all levels...

I wasn't sure what to expect when I first started this series. I was a little worried it would be a little over my head since I had virtually no background in the field of human perception, but I was SO wrong. The speaker never once spoke down to me, but he still kept each lesson easy to understand and enjoyable. As a teacher myself, I really appreciate that! He used real-world examples, actual experiments, and gave experiments we could recreate at home to helps us understand how we process the world around us! I listened to several chapters back-to-back because it was enjoyable.

Worth it -- great material, explained well.

Not very useful

I've really enjoyed several of The Great Courses, so I was particularly disappointed in this one given that I've come to expect so much from them.

Most of the course (about 90%) has to do with categorizing every single nuance of the study of learning and assigning every nuance a vocabulary term that the listener will most likely never hear or use again in their lifetime. Of the remaining 10%, 5% dealt with scientific studies that just made me think, "Wow, it's amazing what some scientists get paid to study."

The remaining 5% that was actually useful information can be summed up as follows:

1. Test yourself frequently in the process of studying. Don't wait to test yourself until you think you know the material. The more frequently you test yourself on whatever you're studying, the more likely you will retain the information. (This was from chapter 12)

2. Test yourself continually, not only on the information you don't know, but also on the information that you believe you've learned. That's because you can actually teach yourself to forget that information by ignoring it in the review process. (This was from chapter 12)

3. Foreign language learning can be greatly enhanced by listening to anything in that language in the background on a routine basis. Basically, when you do this, you are faking immersion, but your brain senses the immersion experience as being real and absorbs more than you think even if you don't understand what's being said. (I've forgotten the chapter for this, but I think it was around chapter 10 or so.)

4. Your brain is always expandable at any time at any age. Forget your IQ, forget the way you think you learn best (by hearing, by seeing, by doing), and forget your past experiences with learning a particular topic. Just do it.

Worthwhile read

Each chapter is a story of a psychoanalyst's (Stephen Grosz) experience with a patient or series of patients. These vignettes are clearly selected to demonstrate valuable principles about how the human mind works. Each story is entertaining and insightful and beautifully read by the narrator who has a soothing baritone voice.

As a person who took a few psych classes...

As a person who took a few psych classes in undergrad, and I reflect on my life a lot, I really enjoyed that this book is entirely patient stories, extrapolating insights about individuals and humanity, and explaining the author's professional technique.(

Not Pop Psych; actual observatns of psychoanalyst

This book is worth a credit. This isn't Dr. Phil. A psychoanalyst examines common problems observed in patients over many years. Interesting, significant and relevant problems, some of which you have either seen or suffered [er, well, losing the wallet, losing everything, yes].

If the book were a little longer, I'd have given it 5. I'll say 4.5, erring on the side of 4 overall and 5 on the substance. ANALYZE THAT!

Exceeded my expectations

After reading reviews I was reluctant to try this book as I was looking for books with tangible to do list advice type topics. Still, the premise intrigue me and I am very glad I did not pass it up! I enjoyed each chapter's featured story and definitely feel like I got the insights intended in each chapter. They intend to listen to it again and see if I can come up with my own journaling based on the chapters which I do not expect to be too difficult! I found it to be an enjoyable listen and would recommend!

I really enjoyed it.

I could see myself in several of the patients and gleaned from the insights he shared.

A sampler of spicy ideas to liven up the mind

I'm finding this series habit-forming. I like the quickness of each little vignette: it introduces an idea or new phrasing or view of things that may be novel to me (great!) or not (fine, it's not too long). From time to time one hears a very gifted explainer: it introduces me to authors whose full-length books I also read.

The title really does deliver, but beware, there is a lot of hugely differing ideas in this book that moves very quickly. Take your time reading and processing this, and maybe give it 2 reads. Well worth it.

I would not recommend this book. I thought it had an interesting idea, but after listening to the content it was a bit bland. It wasn't anything new that I could use as within an educational standpoint.

What made the experience of listening to Nutrient Power the most enjoyable?

This book not only shows the scientific evidence that psychiatric drugs only treat the problem, just the symptoms, but also explains how nutrients can really fix the problem, which problems are quickly to fix (like pyrroluria) and which are harder to fix (such as autism).

What was one of the most memorable moments of Nutrient Power?

There are several small sample cases which describe real people who got cured. This makes me think my daughter could be listed there.

What about Richard Allens performance did you like?

The narrator lacks in emotion, but yet the book is fascinating.

I don't read many books so it's probably sound shallow to say this is the best I have read. What matters is that I truly enjoy listening to the deep and assuring voice, narrating such a well told story. Stories of real life experiences, on how we lose and find ourselves. Thank you Stephen. Fascinating insights into peoples lives

Loved the narration and the stories. The book gives a great insight into the issues people struggle with and how a skilled analyst can help them.

I first heard some of the chapters from this when it was broadcast as Radio 4's book of the week and was so impressed that I had to download the audiobook. It is definitely my listen of the year so far. I loved the insights into people's lives and behaviour and the reasons offered for why we do the things we do really resonated with me. This is beautifully written and the narrator absolutely does justice to the writing with the slow, hypnotic reading. Stephen Grosz' words have stayed with me long after listening. An absolute must for anyone interested in the human experience.

Great listen, Great Narrator

Really enjoyed this, very different from what I'd normally listen to. There is about 30 stories in here, allowing you to listen in to peoples lives for a while, very engaging. I also loved the narration, it was almost hypnotic which really suited the audiobook.

Interesting Study

I would and have because it is a very interesting topic and gave me a different perspective on psychopaths.

The individual stories of various psychopaths was intriguing.

Did Erik Bergmann do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

There really wasn't much cause to differentiate since it was a non fiction book. He fell flat while trying one accent though...he should just have read it straight.

No. It is a non-fiction and scientific type book. It would not make a good movie.

You'll be talking about this book a lot to your friends and colleagues after you read it. It is very interesting.

Absolutely - as the title suggests, there are traits found within a serial killer's psyche that suggests we all have something to learn from the way their brains are wired.

Eye opener!

Would you listen to The Depression Cure again? Why?

Yes, I plan too. Because of all the good information. You will learn more about depression than you ever thought possible. I found myself saying "oh my God I do that!" over and over again. I found out more about myself and why I think or do what I do! I began seeing a difference in my depression within 1 day of listening to this book. I began simply with Omega-3 vitamins and once I felt better I worked my way up to sunny day walks. I am now socializing again and feeling the happiness I once felt. I plan on slowly getting off my depression pills within the next week because I no longer feel I need them. Sometimes all it takes is the right vitamin and the right words. This guy "gets" me more than I got myself.

Better than a counselling session!!!

I got more out of this book than all the years of counselling I've had and countless books I've read. I've read reviews about a book being life changing. This is the first time I've ever felt that this book alone could help cure your depression permanently!! I've listened to this book twice in just a month. Very straight forward steps to take and able to go as quickly or slowly as you are able to go.

There is not one negative about this book.

In just a couple of weeks since I first read this book I've started taking the supplements, more aware of ruminating(harder habit to break but have greatly reduced amount), improving my eating/sleeping habits and planning to get back into working out and socializing more. I'm following most of his recommendations and I'm already noticing improvements. I'm hopeful and excited of how much better I will be and feel once I get all of them implemented !

If you suffer from depression, feeling down or just can't get yourself into gear this book is truly a game changer.

Excellent book. Truly very helpful.

This is a great book on a very dry subject. It was full of very sound, practical and "do-able" advice. Only wish the narrator had been someone else.
