That's right! We're actually back! Many apologies for the several month hiatus between episodes. You can mostly blame Dave (he elaborates on the podcast). Hopefully, though, we will now be putting up episodes every Sunday (and working on streamlining the post-production process so as to reduce any further delays). Anyways, thanks for sticking with us, and on with the review! As you likely deduced from the podcast title, Dave and Diane review The Hangover this week. Directing: Diane didn't have much to say, but Dave thought that Todd Phillips (director of such movies as Starsky & Hutch and Old School) did a solid job relative to his previous directing efforts. Acting: Overall, Dave and Diane both generally enjoyed the acting. Diane's favorite performance was from Ed Helms (Stu), while Dave's was Zach Galifianakis as Alan. The hosts had an "interesting" discussion of Bradley Cooper (Phil). Music: The soundtrack of this film appealed to Diane's pop-music sensibilities (with tracks such as "Who Let the Dogs Out"), while Dave appreciated its use of older tracks (such as "Joker and the Thief"). Diane generally approved of the music in the film, while Dave thought it served its purpose, but that the music was not overly great. Plot: Diane was quite a fan of the plot in this film. She said in some ways it was rather brilliant, mostly due to a very unique set of comical devices (despite a very clichéd set-up for the movie's story). Dave had similar feelings. He quite enjoyed the humor, which he said was rather smart (despite sometimes resorting to some more low-brow gags). While Dave did not overly enjoy the plot, he felt it served the humor quite well. Overall Score: Both Dave and Diane had similar feelings on this film. While it was certainly not Oscar material, the hosts thought it was a very decent comedy with plenty of good laughs. Diane gave the film a B+, and Dave gave it a B. No Dave's DVD this week! Additional Notes: Dave would like to apologize for his audio levels being a bit high (creating a few rough spots). Dave and Diane review Disaster Movie. Acting: Both Dave and Diane despised the acting. Dave thought the dialouge was awful, the impressions were utterly off, and, in general, the actors were quite terrible. Diane felt that the fact that several actors played multiple roles, and that Kim Kardashian was the movie's biggest name were laughable. Directing: Once again, both hosts hated the work done here. Dave called Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer talentless hacks, and Diane said that they should never have branched of from the Scary movie team (they wrote, produced, and directed Epic Movie, Date Movie, and Meet the Spartans as well). Music: Diane actually thought the music was decent, noting that she liked the three Chipmunks singing and that the High School Musical parody was okay. Dave, on the other hand, disliked the music greatly, remarking that he hated the song at the end of the movie and that the music did a very poor job of highlighting scenes. Message: Diane thought the movie had no message whatsoever other than to take childish pokes at other films. Dave went on rather large rant on how movies of this terrible nature disprove the idea that movies, but not videogames, are art. Plot: Diane and Dave, once again, agreed that the plot was terrible. Diane, in her own words, summarized the plot by saying "blah, blah, blah." Dave believed that the plot was a terrible spawn of the one in Cloverfield, a movie which he liked a great deal. Overall Grades: Diane flatly stated that this movie earns a big fat F, and that it is perhaps the worst movie she has ever seen. Dave believed that this movie does not even deserve a place on the same scale as the other movies that he has rated. Instead, Dave said that it should be categorized as the "Worst movie of all time." (To this, I'm sure we all say "Nice work Dave, you've already violated the podcast rules that you created.") Dave's DVD of the Week: This week, Dave reviewed The Office: Season 2 on DVD. Dave stated that the show is fantastic, and is perhaps the best one on TV currently. He remarked that the humor is subtle, they make smart pop culture references (unlike Disaster Movie), and you can actually care about story lines. Dave also noted that there are some decent special features on the final disk. He gave the DVD an A, and the show an A+. His only complaint was that the commentaries weren't for all of the episodes, and that they weren't quite as sharp as he would have liked. Notes: Sorry on being a few days late! Dave and Diane review Traitor. Acting: Diane liked the acting alot. Dave, on the other hand, didn't think the acting was spectacular, but said that it was quite competent. They both thought that Don Cheadle and Guy Pierce had very good performances. Directing: Dave was pleased to see that this was Jeffrey Nachmanoff's first major directing credit, and said it was a great debut. Dave's only complaint was that the movie stradled the line between and action and intrigue a bit too much. Diane said that Nachmanoff did a very good job. Plot: Diane liked the story a great deal. She said it was quite interesting, and provided a slightly different look into the world of terrorism. Dave also liked the plot, but thought it was a bit slow and perdictable for the first have but picked up a great deal. He also remarked that it played off the stereotype of an extremist terrorist a bit much. Message: Diane liked the message of this movie. She reiterrated her point that it showed the story from the point of view of a Muslim, and said that it left her thinking. Dave took a different take on this film's messages. He believed that it was actually highlighting the point that, in every group of people, there are good and bad individuals. He quite liked this point. Music: Dave said that the music wasn't overly original, but that it was quite effective in highlighting the scenes. Diane said that she was so engrossed in the film that she didn't take much note of the music. She believed that this was a sign that it underscored the scenes well. Overall Grades: Both Dave and Diane gave this movie a B overall, and said that it was pretty good. Each recommended viewing it, as there is not a whole lot out at the moment. Dave's DVD of the Week: For the second time, this segment was taken over by Diane, who reviewed Hairspray. To all those who enjoy musicals, Diane highly recommended this movie. She thought it was great all around: the cast was phenomenal (especially Christopher Walken and John Travolta), the message was also very good, and the movie was filled with a great deal of joy. Overall, she gave the movie an A. It may be late, and there may be no notes, but heck, Dave got this beast out on Thursday and with no clicks. Thank you, and keep it Reel readers!
