Good Work!

I'm a consultant; this book was useful to me, in that it helped provide context for understanding there are many types of distance; not just physical distance. Important to understand this set of concepts when working on e-collaboration or knowledge management initiatives in corporations. In terms of writing style, sometimes I got the feeling this was Karen Lojeski's graduate thesis worked up into a book, but if true, that's OK; still good info.

Not just for business executives...

This new addition to the Wiley Microsoft Leadership Series provides an updated perspective, not only for business leaders, but for executives, managers and leaders of all types of organizations. Whether we work in public libraries or for Hewlett Packard, communication in the digital age is a challenge!

Authors Lojeski and Riley present a timely, innovative response to workplace teams. Their virtual distance model cleverly intertwines the threads of physical distance, affinity distance, and operational distance into a visual shape that helps to understand the broader picture of today's workplace and its impact on work success or failure.

The reader learns about the history of the notion of teamwork. This context is not only relevant to corporate society, but all societies where work is done, both the private sector and the non-profit and government sectors. The discussion of pre-Industrial Age teams and Guilds to the teamwork models of today conveys a chronology of the past that helps to put the workplace of today in clearer perspective. The authors state: `...it is no longer possible that virtual workers build emotional ties to one another in the ways that people have done for centuries. The loose organizations of the Digital Age are not usually built for this purpose." This is a thought-provoking insight encouraging all leaders to take more responsibility for bridging the "affinity distance" gap.

Overall, I recommend this work to all readers currently in the workforce, not just managers, not just students, not just academics.

Boring, boring, boring

This author repeats himself over and over again, throughout the book, throughout the chapters, until you finally decide to stop listening. Basically this book provides some vague notions about lean dynamics and is referencing Southwest Airlines and Toyota in every paragraph - without actually touching any specifics. Honestly, this book was a waste of my time and I would not recommend it to anyone.

Not exactly what I was looking for...

I was hoping for a book on how to write a business plan step by step. This one just tells you why you need a business plan and the uses for it.

Truly for dummies

This is a book of common sense. The insight to business planning is superficial and the simplicity of the knowledge presented captures the title brilliantly. After listening to this, I now know that I am not a dummy when it comes to business planning. I would only recommend this book to folks with a cursory education.

Concise Overview of Necessary Planning Steps

For those seeking a quick study on business planning this is a good guide. I recommend it!

Ummm....

I tried to listen and read along (a sound tactic for ADD studying) but the recording was all over the place. In the last part, it jumps ahead over 100 pages. What? Why? It never covers the missing pages. I wish I had my money back.

Informative.

Easy listening. Very clear and helpful. I'd recommend for any "dummy" who'd like an intro into what a business plan outline looks like.

Rip off

This is mostly filler offering such useless "smart tips" as use a card table or maybe a separate desk to set up your computer, and remember to have a good attitude in conducting your business, as the type of medical billing tutorial advice given. In addition more than half of this is justcopy pasted stuff from other entrepreneur magazine articles relating in general to accounting and marketing. I know this is how they make money just putting out the same thing over and over again but it's four hours that could've been done in 25 minutes in terms of actual information conveyed. In addition it is very annoying and hard to listen to because there's so little information and it is so stuffed with mindless filler. I am returning this book for a refund. I will never get my 4 1/2 hours back though

unless english is your second language AND you have never worked a day of your life around food AND you say things like "outside the box" numerous times a day, this book is not for you. at least it was not for me.

For someone with No Clue!

If you take the time to endure the entire listen, and feel like you know enough to start a restaurant, PLEASE DON'T

The deep, authoritative, scary voice character used to emphasis "important" points is a joke.

If you find that the information provided in this audio is not common sense, or thing you learned in your first job in a restaurant, you are not ready to start a restaurant.

This was a waste of a good audible credit!

Don't waste your money

This book is completely outdated and only the first few minutes are about a consulting business. The rest of the book is nothing more than general business principles most of which don't even apply to a service business like consulting.

not worth it

I enjoyed the first 45 minutes. Then I noticed the word "consulting" dropped completely. Then I notice that this audio book is just a compilation of articles on Entrepreneur most of which I am familiar with. Compared to "Small Business Bible" a real audio book this is just popular business ideas put together not worth the $41.00 I paid.

I think this is a new selling technique like Movie Trailer Syndrome. Watch the movie trailer and you have seen the best of the movie, Free. This audio book is like that. But thinking about it what can 3hr + tell you about business?

If you want to know about the field aviod this one

Not much information about the field it self and more information about how to establish a consulting office.I expected more information about the business, historical overview and recent changes but I was wrong.

The book had some good basic information, but the appendices were not included. The author/reader made several references to the "good and more advanced information" that could be used by the book buyer that were in the appendices. The appendices are not included in the download.

Awesome book

There's more here than first meets the ear. There are lots of great historical examples from both history of warfare and business to illustrate the concepts.

You need to listen multiple times to get the full effect, and it's written and read so well, that repeating is not a chore. I'm buying the actual book as a reference.

What did you love best about The Marine Corps Way?

This book you cannot put down, so make sure you have an afternoon to read it from cover to cover.

Boring, but probably useful.

I am both a business owner and a former marine. I found it boring, but somewhat useful if you can get through the boredom. Just a thought here, but I have a feeling that if the two marines would have done this book without the help of the Ph.D that the book would have been more interesting to read and listen to. I always cringe when I am about to read a business book and see that the author has a Ph.D after his name. It was still an ok book though.
