    Classic Book!!
I bought "el Retrato de Dorian Gray" because it is in a list of the -must read books. It is a nice story with a really sad ending. I recommend it
    One of my favorite books
Three things I love: books, music and movies. This one I used to teach Spanish to other people. As I know the book in English it was easy to take my students through certain pages where the Spanish translation is excellent for those that are practicing at the intermediate and advanced levels. The art of conversation and how it is portrayed in the written form is beautifully shared in this book. Hope you love it as much as I do.
    Great translation!
I'm a high school English teacher who had a non-English speaking student dropped my class. I decided to get her Spanish versions of the text we were reading in class, and this was one of them. She enjoyed the book and read it in record time. While the book is in Spanish, all of the supplementary materials I gave her are in English, and I have her give written responses in English. This translation helped her stick with the class. I was worried that the translation would alter the content, meaning she wouldn't be able to answer some of the questions I created off the English version, but she hasn't had a problem with it. Over Spring Break, I took this translation home to read myself. (I know. I should have read this before I gave it to her, but I didn't have the time.) It was very good. It is a high enough reading level that I had some trouble with it, but that says more about my Spanish skills than the book. I believe I will have five more Spanish-speaking students next year, so I plan on buying four more copies of this.

I suspect that he was overwhelmed and killed by his own guilt when his heart was broken by the beautiful Rebecca. In a sense
The writing for this classic book is old fashioned and tarried. The hero in this book seems to be King Richard, the Lion-heart, who has given more attention, descriptions and character dimensions by the author. He in result has become a character more interesting than the chivalrous Ivanhoe who even though has been given the title of the book. The final combat scene between Ivanhoe and Bois-Guilbert, to me, is an anti-climax, without clearly shown how Bois-Guilert being defeated and die by Ivanhoe. I suspect that he was overwhelmed and killed by his own guilt when his heart was broken by the beautiful Rebecca. In a sense, he is quite romantic, from the modern point of views.
Referring to the Modern Library Classics paperback edition
No wonder this novel is a classic! I'm sure there isn't much I can add to the praises of Ivanhoe. I will just say that I enjoyed it very much. I mostly wanted to comment on the edition that I read.
I purchased The Modern Library Classics (paperback) edition. The quality of the book is fair, for a paperback. There are a few footnotes throughout the book and quite a few notes on the text in the back of the book, some were written by Scott himself. I only found a few of these notes to be helpful; as for the rest, they did nothing to enhance my understanding of the text and some left me with even more questions than when I started. Many of them refer to other books for further explanation.
Also, there are quite a few phrases throughout the story in Latin and French. Some are explained in the text while the rest are left untranslated. I wish their translations would have been included in the above mentioned notes. I wish there had been a pronounciation guide for the names of the characters as well.
I would give the book 5 stars but for the problems I mentioned above. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the middle-ages, knights, chivalry, King Richard, etc...even if you have no particular interest in these things, you should at least give the book a chance. After all, it's a classic and as with most classics, you can hardly ever go wrong.
Fun Adventure, A Bit Slow In Places
I guess I am a romantic. I liked the action and the thought that men did the right thing because it was the noble thing to do. I was a little disturbed by the Christian treatment of the Jews, which was a key theme throughout the story. My only criticism is that right when I thought the action would "heat up," the author chose to describe some scene - like the castle of Coningsburg. Also, I expected the storyline to be more developed in places and it just ended abruptly. I was pleasantly surprised to see Robin Hood integrated into the story. Overall, I enjoyed reading it as a work of historical fiction.
This hasn't changed in the last century, or so. ...
My favorite part is when we are transported to "another part of the forest" to continue the tale.

TV and Movies versions were good, but the book is better. . .
One of my co-workers encouraged me to read this since I have only seen the TV/Movie versions. It was a quick read and very enjoyable. Fortunately, the TV/Movie versions weren't too far off the mark. Regardless, there were facets of the story that you would only get through the book, which is why reading the book will always be my favorite option.
BAH! HUMBUG!! "God bless Us, Every One"
A Christmas Carol is a beloved Christmas favorite. Nothing says Christmas like favorite Christmas stories. This timeless tale has been told in many versions. Iâve seen the movie and play but Iâve never read the book. I thought it was about time to finally read this tale.
The illustrations throughout the book were fun to look at. Not common to find illustrations in books today unless they are children stories.
Lots of great quotes come from this story but the most famous is BAH! HUMBUG! followed by:

As great to read vs as to watch as a production.
We've enjoyed many kinds of productions of this classic Scrooge story. The original makes us 'rise to the occasion' - or at least gets us to mentally take the time to step back in that era. Life was so different, so the real factor is (I think) a little richer, than already assembled viewables. Emotional, and the older language adds some incentive to digging into the story.
    A must read!
Dickens has always intimidated me. Somehow, I made my way through high school and college without having to read one of his novels. Finally, a few weeks before Christmas, I decided to give this a try when I learned it is relatively short. I figured if it took some work, at least it wouldn't take all that long. I'm sorry I waited so long. It was impossible for me to separate this from the many versions of A Christmas Carol I've seen over the years. I loved it. I enjoyed the glimpse into the time and place of the story. The story and theme are, of course, legendary.
Don't be intimidated. This is a book everyone should read at least once.
    Classic I Know
I have tried this one before and was distracted within the first five chapters but with the advise of a colleague I am going to attempt this one again. I am late 30's and sometimes have a tough time focusing for long spans of time unless the story is captivating from the get go, you have to appreciate writing for the sake of verb-age and description to get into this. So, because it is a classic and I think the classics should be read - I'll give it another go but not looking forward to it despite the wonderful reviews. Hated Pride and Prejudice too - just depends on personal taste I suppose. Loved The Divine Comedy....

Dick Young stays in his friend Professor Magnus Lane's house in Cornwall, on the understanding he will be a guinea-pig for a new drug that Magnus has developed. As a result of the experiment he is transported back to fourteenth century Cornwall.
With each 'trip' he becomes more and more involved with medieval intrigue, adultery and murder. Is it merely hallucination; a subconscious escape from his own complicated life, or a real journey into the past? He becomes obsessed with the world he visits, and past and present eventually become inextricably and perilously mixed.

Too much left out! I miss theUNABRIDGED Version!
I have gotten the unabridged version from my library (on tape) in the past, it was so much better. The abridged version leaves SOOOOOO much detail out that you miss much of the story and its hard to follow. You are better to hold off until Audible gets the unabridged version.
    Kept me listening!
I loved this story when I first read it and was a bit disappointed with the adbridged version, since it really leaves out so much detail.
If this is your first time with this story then you should love it.
But, please Audilble.com, please get the Unabridged version!
    Excellent!
After a slightly slow start, I found myself drawn into this audiobook much in the same way that the Dick Young is drawn into what may be a gap in time. An old college friend persuades him to try an experimental drug and he becomes quickly becomes drawn into a medieval mystery from the past. This audiobook is mesmerizing and was particularly enjoyable while making a long holiday car trip.
Look What They've Done To My Song...
Rebecca is Daphne Du Maurier's masterpiece but this is one of those little gems you dig in an author's back catologue hoping to find. You would expect a book from the '60's about acid trips and time travel to be goofy and dated but D. Du M brings to it the atmosphere and sense of longing all her books have. Instead of Manderley, it is 14th century Cornwall the main character is helplessly drawn to, and the reader gets pulled in as well. Reading at it's best can be a form of time-travel itself if you think about it. However-- whoever decided to abridge this audiobook should be drawn and quartered. It took all the magic out so it was just flat and confusing. Based on this version, I would never have picked this title as one of my favorite books. I agree with the first reviewer: "Wait for the unabridged version!"
    Medieval Masterpiece
Would you consider the audio edition of The House on the Strand to be better than the print version?
It's always fun to hear the spoken word describing the story. I love DuMaurier's books Frenchman's Creek and Rebecca are in a class by themselves. This one is quite different from the others but equally entertaining. It is like you are "there" in the story with the characters.
What other book might you compare The House on the Strand to and why?

    It's One Heavy Book
So I just wanted to let others know that this collection is one giant book of all Austen novels combined. You can't tell from the picture, but I was actually expecting (and hoping for) individual books packed in one box like other book collections I have. So I was definitely a bit disappointed when I received this book. And while I am used to reading large books like David McCullough biographies, this compilation is by far the heaviest I have in my possession. I'm not sure I will be able to read this in bed or even hold it up in my arms for any long period of time. So beware. I would have chosen differently if had this information when I was contemplating purchase.
    EMMA
A lot of water under the bridge since first reading this book many years ago. I do not know why I liked it so much them...possibly I was blinded by adolescents and want everyone to have a loving mate and played match maker myself thinking also I was above others..shame on me!! This book the second time around was so frustrating I could have screamed in parts. How dare Emma feel so superior in her small town and looked for others to make over in her image. How dare she play match maker with every eligible bachelor and made in the area thinking she knew best. Was she a true friend visiting all the families and offering her solicitations as if she were the queen and it being a big gift to shower her presence with others (all of whom she felt were inferior) on a regular basis.
Glad to have revisited this book and will revisit others but don't think they will be by Jane Austen. My book was downloaded onto my Kindle from Amazon.
Its starts off Emma becoming good friends with a girl named Harriet
Emma Woodhouse is a young girl growing up in a family of wealth and high class. Throughout the story, Emma becomes what some would call a matchmaker. Its starts off Emma becoming good friends with a girl named Harriet. Harriet doesnât know her parents therefore she doesnât have money or a high social ranking. Emma attempts to set her up with two different men and both come crashing down miserably. Emma attempts to help everyone Emma falls in love with a man by the name of Frank Churchill. She thinks they will wed, but later on you find out heâs already secretly engaged to a woman by the name of Jane. Emma is devastated by this but begins to reflect upon her feelings. She ends up confessing her love for her brother in law Mr.Knightley who has been guiding her throughout the story and Harriet marries Mr. Martin.
Jane Austenâs writing style was very witty, short, and sweet. She used clever wording that packs a punch in short sentences.

    Editorial Reviews:
Written in 1825 by Sir Walter Scott, The Talisman is an epic throwback tale of connivers, deceivers, lovers, and heroes.
Set in the Holy Land during the bloody 103-year battle of Christians and Muslims during the Third Crusade, and narrated with steady aplomb by Jim Killavey, the listener is taken along on sprawling adventure that follows the triumphs and tribulations of the Scottish knight Sir Kenneth, as he clashes and duels with his twisted foe, Sultan Saladin.
A "historical" novel that plays liberally with "facts", The Tailisman is nevertheless a solid and spirited yarn.

You need long stretches of time for this book,
First let me say that I did not read the trade revues of the other reading of this book. I am glad that I did not because they lay out the plot in great detail! The book is quite long and at my first attempt at reading I abandoned it after a little more that one hour. The language is very elaborate and florid and there seems to be no discernable plot. Some time latter, faced with a ten hour drive I decided to try again, I am very glad I did. The plot moves very slowly because of the elaborate dialog but it still held my attention with many unexpected twist and turns. You get used to parsing the long and elaborate sentences and they turn out to be quite charming as often it is the characters chastising each other in very polite terms. I also found interesting the portrayal of the European Code of Chivalry with the portrayal of the Code of Honor for the Warrior class in Japan as presented in the Otori Trilogy. I will listen to this book again when I have long stretches of time available, I am sure I missed many important clues in the early part. My ranking went from a one star to a five star.
The Talisman by Walter Scott read by Killevey
I enjoyed both the reading and the book to such an extent that I was disappointed when at the very climax the book skipped a chapter or two and went to the last few pages of the book. It was easy to fill in what had happened, but I would rather have been able to listen to the whole book. There is a serious flaw here and I have reported it and hope the audio book people correct the error.
would have been a good book
What disappointed you about The Talisman?
The recording skips the climatic chapter.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Anger. The recording skips the climatic chapter.
    Any additional comments?
The recording skips the climatic chapter.
Has anyone else listened to this recording?
Would you try another book written by Sir Walter Scott or narrated by Jim Killavey?
    Yes, and Maybe.
Has The Talisman put you off other books in this genre?
    no.
What didnt you like about Jim Killaveys performance?
Slightly stilted diction, some words mispronounced. The narrator isn't really the problem.,
    Any additional comments?
Most of the second half of this novel is missing. The narrative skips abruptly from Trial by Combat to the Court of Salladin. My download seems to think its complete.

Set in the days of the British Raj, Kipling's finest novel is the exciting and touching tale of an Irish orphan-boy who has lived free in the streets of Lahore before setting out, with a Tibetan Lama, on a double quest. This eventually leads to enrolment in the Indian Secret Service and a thrilling climax in the Himalayas.
    Editorial Reviews:
Enchanting music, ideal for an exotic Indian setting, is the perfect accompaniment to this marvelous tale. Narrator Madhav Sharma dazzles - whether he uses English, Irish, or various melodious Indian accents, along with the style of an old-fashioned storyteller. Kim sounds just like the lively, gutsy, and intelligent survivor he is. Sharma is engaging and very funny when he quotes Kim, particularly when Kim admits that he quickly learned to avoid white men and missionaries. In addition to telling an excellent story, audio promotes this dynamic country and its people, just as Kipling intended
