Du-du-du-dumb
This story was just plain dumb. Mind-numbingly dull. I kept reading until the end... actually, not true. I skimmed the last 10 pages. Wish I'd skimmed the last half of book. The reason I gave the book 2 stars is that the author can write... She just needs to find a story next time. I feel cheated out of the day I spent on this during my summer vacation. Ugh
Sounds campy and fun but doesn't deliver
I wanted to like this book. The description sounded interesting, funny and fun; a campy look at the drama of the 'burbs set against the background of the Santa Ana's and resulting wildfire.
The characters were not well-developed enough to form any emotion about and therefore their foibles just seemed silly and childish. Plot lines were started but not developed (i.e., Sam's crush on Belle) and the end was just too tidy a package.
I'll be reading the book again as I'm leading our book club discussion on it next month, and will add to my review if my opinion changes, but I finished this book today, in one day, and I've already forgot most of it.
Like her style
To me this story played out like a reality TV show - a little wacky with all the inter-couple intrigue, with an oversexed wacky babysitter thrown in...so very L.A. The message, through Lance, at times seemed a little preachy...I found myself skimming the last pages, growing weary of his inner voice replaying the same missive again and again.
Yet I really like this author's style of writing. I liked her choice of words, her use of metaphor and many of her descriptive phrases. I think her characters were developed, rounded, and complete with the inevitable flaws we all have, and some surprising ones too. I just felt a little cheated by the lack of a stronger plot line...but I really hope Thelma writes another, because I sure do like her style.
Great story
I enjoyed reading this book, the author tells a great story about family bonding, and coming back together after life gets in the way.
Wouldn't reccomend this book
I had a hard time getting into this book, and relating to the characters.
