    Publisher's Summary:
Comics kill. Or so the esteemed Dr. Werner Frederick would have people believe - people like the Congressmen holding hearings on banning violent crime and horror "funny books". And when the crusade provokes a most un-funny murder, Jack Starr - comics syndicate troubleshooter - has no shortage of suspects. Was it the knife-wielding juvenile delinquent or the naked seductress? Perhaps a frustrated publisher or an outraged cartoonist. Or was it a comic book reader?
No One Delivers Like Max Allan Collins.
Inspired by the real-life 1950s witch-hunt against Tales From the Crypt publisher EC Comics, Seduction of the Innocent pulls back the curtain for an insiders view of the history of comics.
    Critic Reviews:
"Collins masterfully blends fact and fictiontranscends the historical thriller." (Jeffery Deaver)
"Collins makes it sound as though it really happened." (New York Daily News)
"Collins witty, hard-boiled prose would make Raymond Chandler proud." (Entertainment Weekly)

    Fun enough
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I'm a long-time Collins fan, and this does the trick: good atmosphere and good historical research. The plot's unusually predictable, though.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
    The comic industry history.
How could the performance have been better?
The narrator has a fine voice and he's a pleasure to listen to, but he does female (and gay) characters without a trace of subtlety. It got so clumsy at times that I nearly stopped listening.
    Always a good listen
This author/narrator combination never disappoints. Story lines are drawn from the headlines of the day. Dan John Miller is an outstanding narrator. His transition from one character or one accent to another is flawless. He brings each character into separate focus while blending them together to follow the story. It is always a pleasure to find another of these books. Always a good listen.
Seduction, but miss many sexual ones. Brave.
Only a 3 star overall because. i like several of his other books more. He is an author to check out. most of his stories push in one direction then 'bamb' a 360 degree turn.
if you like comics-strip or books, gives some insights. if you like a hero underated, this is good. if you like the passion of nontraditional person and use creativity in quite strong matter, then this book is for you.
Quick read. Audio great. Worth the small price. Recommended.

    Title: Chains of Folly

    Narrator: Susan Duerden
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 3 mins

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 64 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
That Nelda Roundheels had been murdered would have been of little interest to anyone - except that her body turned up in the bishop of Winchester's bedchamber with a letter to the bishop, from the king's most important enemy, rolled up in her breastband. The bishop and his knight, Sir Bellamy of Itchen, realize immediately that the purpose of putting the body in Winchester's bedchamber is to embarrass and discredit the bishop. And the reason for this attack on Winchester is his calling of a convocation to chastise the king for acting high-handedly against the bishop of Salisbury. Had the king himself ordered this outrage? Had the king's favorite, Waleran de Meulan, ordered it? Unfortunately the answer is not so simple to find; there are many other noblemen who want the king's favor and might attack Winchester to get it.
To save Winchester's reputation it is urgently necessary to discover who killed the woman and who placed her in Winchester's bedchamber. Bell, to his mingled joy and distress, is ordered to ask Magdalene la Batarde, whoremistress of the Old Priory Guesthouse, once his lover but now estranged, to help him solve the mystery.
    Members Reviews:
Great book. A real shame about the narrator.
Would you consider the audio edition of Chains of Folly to be better than the print version?
Sadly, no, the print edition is much better. This is a wonderful story - much more involving that the first three books. (As hard as that is to believe! The first three were amazing!) The narrator made this recording painful.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Chains of Folly?
I would have to re-read the book. Thinking back at the recording I've just finished, I keep grinding my teeth at the painful "personality" the reader tried to give the characters, and can't get past them. I think perhaps the early battle scene where Bel protects the Bishop?
What didnt you like about Susan Duerdens performance?
Her narration was sing-song. Her characterizations were massively irritating. The Bishop always snarled. Bel always hissed and drawled. Magdalene sounded continuously air-headed. Diot sounded like a back alley tough. Although everyone was "speaking" French, one character had an affected French accent. Right up until the narrator forgot who was talking, then the wrong painful "voice" said the next line which didn't belong to them.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
A lighthearted bit of slap and tickle is a lot of fun - right up until someone steals the state secrets.
    Any additional comments?
    Re-Record? Please?
    My First Audible Return....
What disappointed you about Chains of Folly?
The narrator was horrible - I don't believe she had read/listened to any of the earlier works. She made Madelaine sound simpering and stupid. I couldn't get past the first few chapters.
What was most disappointing about Roberta Gelliss story?
    The narrator
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Didn't understand the characters - completely distracting
    Any additional comments?
Miss May did a wonderful job with the earlier books - I encourage the publisher to record this one again...
    I miss Nadia May's reading
Good story but this narrator is too sing-song-y for my taste. Every sentence seems to have the same rhythm, the same inflection.

Length: 7 hrs and 12 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-05-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 182 votes
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
This eagerly awaited fifth book in John Maddox Roberts's Edgar-nominated historical mystery series once again takes the reader back to the Rome of Julius Caesar and the Roman Senator Decius Caecilius Metellus the Younger. Decius has won himself a reputation as both an investigator and, most unfortunately, a bit of a playboy. Having been banished by his family for sometimes embarrassing activities to a rather leisurely lifestyle on Rhodes, he is puzzled to be suddenly and unexpectedly summoned home to assist in an investigation.
Quintus Caecilius Metellus Celer, a relative of Decius and his family and the head of a powerful political clan, has been poisoned, and his infamous wife, Clodia, is immediately suspected of disposing of her rather inconvenient husband. Not entirely convinced of Clodia's guilt, Decius delves into the intricacies of Rome's ruling class and discovers that a clandestine, forbidden witches' cult is inextricably intertwined with some very highborn people. A trial for Clodia would be most unwelcome, as it could bring to light some well-kept secrets. To get to the bottom of the corruption that accompanies the intoxicating allure of this ancient city, Decius must form an uneasy alliance with Clodius, Clodia's brother and his sworn enemy, and be extremely careful not to step on any toes.

    It just keeps getting better
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, if they were a fan of historical detective fiction.
    Any additional comments?
This series gets better with every book. I have just finished book 5. I love the historical detail and the characters are becoming more interesting as they are met in each book.
    Great historical Fiction
It's really great to have a historical fiction murder mystery book, where the characters do not have to be politically correct by today's standards. It is a must read!
The book includes all the great Roman historical figures, and as far as I can tell its historically accurate
Although I need to do more research on the history of the Vatican grounds which the book describes in some interesting ways
Each story in series gets better
Where does SPQR V: Saturnalia rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
As far a historical novels in a series, it is one of the most exciting and interisting. John Maddox Roberts knows his history and keeps the time lines perfect.
What did you like best about this story?
I really like the way Decius and his betrothed are working together to figure out the plots and mysteries. Julia is starting to help him, and it's a nice feature. Also in this story Decius really does get rid of the bad guy.
What does John Lee bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I love John Lee as a narrator, he is one of my favorites and he's wonderful with emothions and voices. I'm so glad that when they changed from Simon Vance, who is also one of my favorites they changed to John Lee.
    Any additional comments?
It seems every book in this series is getting better, and the characters that we know are interacting and we learn more about who they are and why they behave the way they do. There is some deep thought going into many of the stories. Looking forward to the next in series.
    Saturnalia
I love this series. Roberts is not only a talented writer, he is also an accomplished historian.

    Publisher's Summary:
In The Bughouse Affair, this first of a new series of lighthearted historical mysteries set in 1890s San Francisco, former Pinkerton operative Sabina Carpenter and her detective partner, ex-Secret Service agent John Quincannon, undertake what initially appear to be two unrelated investigations. Sabina's case involves the hunt for a ruthless lady "dip" who uses fiendish means to relieve her victims of their valuables at Chutes Amusement Park and other crowded places.
Quincannon, meanwhile, is after a slippery housebreaker who targets the homes of wealthy residents, following a trail that leads him from the infamous Barbary Coast to an oyster pirate's lair to a Tenderloin parlor house known as the Fiddle Dee Dee. The two cases eventually connect in surprising fashion, but not before two murders and assorted other felonies complicate matters even further. And not before the two sleuths are hindered, assisted, and exasperated by the bughouse Sherlock Holmes.
    Members Reviews:
    Terrific, engaging detective story!
Would you listen to The Bughouse Affair again? Why?
Yes, I would. It's a terrific book with excellent characters and is also a very good detective story. It proposes an interesting "impossible" crime -- the kind of crime where it seems nobody could have done it -- and while I was busy looking to the left, the book sneaks its solution from the right, only to surprise me when I turned my head around. While not the most ingenious locked-room problem I've ever read -- for that, we'd need to turn to John Dickson Carr -- it's excellent as is.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Sabina Carpenter was a terrific character. I really liked how she keeps coming across women who have been abandoned by society -- widows, the elderly, mothers, etc. left to fend for themselves. A free spirit by nature, Sabina sympathizes with these women and tries everything in her power to help them, giving them the kindness and support that they desperately need.
Which character as performed by Nick Sullivan and Meredith Mitchell was your favorite?
I preferred Nick Sullivan's narration, because the Sherlock Holmes impression is uncanny. It sounds like he's channeling Basil Rathbone from those old radio shows, and it's a blast to listen to. Meredith Mitchell does a terrific job with the female characters, but when she reads the "bughouse Sherlock"'s lines, the English accent was unconvincing.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Well, I loved it -- does that count as extreme? It combines an interesting time period and a great detective duo with a tricky plot. The clues are all there and the reader is on equal footing with the detective. Theres a good locked room mystery. The historical colour is terrific. Sherlock Holmes sort-of shows up as a crazy Limey who calls himself Sherlock Holmes, but it couldn't possibly be Holmes because he fell over the Reichenbach Falls, right? (It's a very fun little parody.)
    Any additional comments?
Its a delicious book and a promising start to the series incarnation as novels -- Bill Pronzini previously wrote some short stories with these characters, but this is the first novel and the first collaboration with his wife Marcia Muller. It was a very enjoyable, entertaining book.

    Purchased the wrong audio book.
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Not really, I'm not interested in abridged books. I thought I was purchasing an unabridged addition.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The book was excellent. The audio book left out interesting and to me important detail.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The pace was good, just wanted more detail.
Could you see The Husband List being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
That would be good. I do not know.
    Loved this book.
If you could sum up The Husband List in three words, what would they be?
This book was funny, romantic and I love Janet Evanovich's writing.
What about Lorelei Kings performance did you like?
It was a little strange hearing Lorelei King's voice in an historical, since she usually does all of Janeit Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books, but it was still good.

    Publisher's Summary:
Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin are ordered home by despatch vessel to bring the news of their latest victory to the government. But Maturin is a marked man for the havoc he has wrought in the French intelligence network in the New World, and the attentions of two privateers soon become menacing. The chase that follows through the fogs and shallows of the Grand Banks is as thrilling, as tense, and as unexpected in its culmination as anything Patrick O'Brian has written.
Then, among other things, follows a shipwreck and a particularly sinister internment in the notorious Temple Prison in Paris. Once again, the tigerish and fascinating Diana Villiers redresses the balance in this man's world of seamanship and war.
    Members Reviews:
Fine Writing, Great Characters, Immersive World
The Surgeon's Mate (1980) is the 7th novel in Patrick O'Brian's addicting series of age of sail novels about the lives, loves, and careers of the British navy captain Jack Aubrey and the naturalist-spy-ship's surgeon Stephen Maturin. It takes place during the War of 1812 and begins with the HMS Shannon sailing into Halifax in Nova Scotia with its American prize frigate the Chesapeake, captured after the ferocious fifteen-minute battle that closed the sixth novel, The Fortune of War (1979). Although ecstatic about finally having a British naval victory over the Americans to celebrate, Jack is afflicted by a badly healing broken arm, the uncertain state of his financial affairs back home in England, and absent letters from his wife Sophie. Stephen is pleased to have escaped from Boston with a passel of helpful American intelligence documents, including names of American spies among the British, and with Diana Villiers, the woman he has loved for years (and the previous six books in the series), and who has finally agreed to marry him. However, despite the obvious benefits of marrying Stephen, including regaining her British citizenship, she is getting cold feet, and Stephen himself is having to deal with a kind of void where his passion and love for her once burned.
This book shares the strong points of the earlier entries in the series. First, without boring veteran readers O'Brian efficiently brings new readers up to speed, here by having Jack and Stephen report about their recent actions to their superiors and colleagues. Second, O'Brian evokes a believable, fully-realized historical world, that of the Napoleonic wars, with characters thinking, speaking, and acting the way one might expect them to think, speak, and act back then and there, rather than as 20th century people transported to the early 19th century. Third, he excels at making long periods of inaction compelling and then suddenly disrupting them with brief, intense scenes of suspenseful, never repetitive action of various types, in this book ranging from naval battles and storms to covert actions and interrogations. Finally, the deep friendship between the perfectly complementary odd couple, Jack and Stephen, is a pleasure to behold. Jack is huge, florid, loud, emotional, good natured, open; Stephen small, sallow, circumspect, intellectual, misanthropic, secretive. At sea on land, Jack is an instinctive and confident leader aboard a ship; adept ashore, Stephen is quite out of place, if not in the way, aboard a ship.

    Publisher's Summary:
On October 30, 1938, rising radio star Orson Welles boondoggles the American public into believing that Martians have attacked Earth. With his clever adaptation of The War of the Worlds, the great showman proves he can get away with anything - maybe even murder.
Minutes before the fictitious invasion goes live on the air, a dead body is found in the studio and the polarizing Welles is the obvious suspect. Convinced that the star has been framed, Walter Gibson - creator of pulp superhero the Shadow - has exactly one hour, the length of the radio show, to solve the murder. But in show business, appearances are deceptive, and the facts of this case are not what they seem.
The sixth in the series of Max Allan Collinss disaster thrillers, The War of the Worlds Murder offers up historical high jinks of Welles-ian proportions.

    Hoax within a hoax
Meticulous historical research as always. But this is the worst of the series. It is a hoax within a hoax and the worst hoax is on the reader. The only thing you feel after reading it is - why did I waste my time with this thing. Very disappointing.
    Best One Yet
I have thoroughly enjoyed all of this series but this one is the best. I love that the author changes his style to match that of the featured author that is the protagonist. And the narration has been excellent throughout. But this narrator truly became the characters. I kept forgetting that Orson Welles and John Houseman are deceased and couldn't be actually participating. I'm really going to be sad when I finish the series and have no more to enjoy.
It was free and I still feel tempted to return it
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The entire story was disorganized and did not meet the expectations given by the title.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
This story could have been organized with a clear point and clear characters. It had the promise, just no follow through.
What three words best describe Dan John Millers voice?
    Better than Average.
Was The War of the Worlds Murder worth the listening time?
Probably not. I've been forcing myself to let it play through.
    Any additional comments?

    Unique style
I love the Max Alan Collins Disaster series. This one is really good but just a bit different than the others. I will now have to listen to the actual broadcast of Orson Welles.
Ran Out Of Heller Books Soooo...
    Any additional comments?
I would highly recommend that before you read or listen to this that you first pick up the MP3 or Audible file of the actual radio broadcast of Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater from 1938. The two together are great fun.

    I Want a Sequel!
This reminded my of an Agatha Christie murder mystery: a predictable set of charismatic characters in a closed environment style whodunit.
I loved the two main characters and their relationship; I really got into it and rooted for them, in fact at times I cared more about them than I did for the mystery. I want a sequel surrounded on their lives!
I was impressed with the authors description of life aboard the Lusitania; I want to read a non-fiction book about it now.
I read it all in one shot on a flight; it was a great diversion since my media-screen wasnt working and I could not watch any movies!
Another good entry into this series
Intriguing plot with a well researched historical setting that readers of this series have come to expect. The factual information in the afterword is as interesting as the book itself.

    Publisher's Summary:
1963: John Fitzgerald Kennedy is a lightning rod for public opinion. The handsome, youthful leader, who is prepared to take America into a brighter future, earns love from cheering crowds. But those who oppose his political agenda - including some who consider themselves betrayed by the Kennedy clan - dare to think the unthinkable: kill an American president.
Nathan Heller is Chicagos most celebrated private detective, hobnobbing with Hugh Hefner, getting written up in Life magazine, enjoying the fruits of a long career that began in a one-room office and now is a coast-to-coast agency. When he does a small favor for a friend - who handles PR for the Teamsters - Heller runs into an old West Side mob crony, a small-time hustler named Jack Ruby. And when that friend is found dead, warning signals start to flash.
Suddenly Jimmy Hoffa wants to talk to Nate...and so does Hoffas arch enemy, U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. Back in 61, Heller acted as the reluctant matchmaker in the ungodly marriage between the Mob and the CIA that created the ill-fated, JFK-sanctioned plot to assassinate Fidel Castro. Now JFK is coming to Chicago and Cuban assassins have been reported in the Windy City. RFK appoints Heller as a "consultant" to the local Secret Service, knowing that Nate understands why conspirators might well target the man code-named "Lancer".
Its a big job for a PI. But with a murder to avenge and a mystery to solve, Hellers up for the challenge.
Rigorously researched, fleshing out a little-known but vital piece of the JFK assassination puzzle, Target Lancer is charged with the electric suspense of real events, and is far more truth than fiction.

    The Best Nate Heller Yet
Well, maybe it's the best yet because it's the latest.
Every one of the books in the Nathan Heller series has been excellent: meticulously researched and expertly written by Max Allan Collins, and narrated with perfect pitch and atmosphere by Dan John Miller.
Foremost on my mind when I downloaded this book the day it was released were the recent disappointments I had suffered with other latest books by my favorite authors. John Grisham brought me to tears with The Broker: it was that bad. Hordes of fans stood in virtual lines to download Michael Connelly's latest Harry Bosch, only to find a so-so story read by a blah narrator.
This book sure wasn't a disappointment. It has everything we've come to expect from Nathan Heller and the A-1 Detective Agency: mobsters, famous politicians, petty crooks, labor union thugs, cops, and fan-dancers, all combined in a wonderful period piece set in 1963 Chicago. It's the month before John Kennedy's assassination and the town is crawling with made men, mad Cubans, and an ex-Marine who bears a strong resemblance to Lee Harvey Oswald. Nate gets recruited by Attorney General Bobby Kennedy to help out with the protection of the president during his upcoming visit to Chicago. The presidential motorcade route goes right through a warehouse district (where the ex-Marine works) where the cars have to slow for a turn onto a downtown street. Publisher's Summary:
It's 1959, and Judy Cooper, the Black Stiletto, sets out to confront a dangerous gangster known as the heroin king of Harlem, when the teenage daughter of her beloved martial arts instructor ends up a prisoner in an uptown narcotics den. The Stiletto has troubles of her own - a shady filmmaker is threatening to reveal her identity to the world - a close friend of her landlord and substitute father may be in cahoots with the Harlem criminals - she's fighting for racial equality - and she has fallen in love again, this time with an FBI agent who has standing orders to arrest her.
Meanwhile the Stiletto's son faces his own blackmail crisis when he finds out that there is a second copy of an 8mm film he found in his mother's strongbox - showing the Black Stiletto unmasked in a film studio dressing room. As he tries to stop the filmmaker's son's extortion plot, he learns that his daughter, Gina, has been brutally assaulted in New York City. The past and the present meet.

    Drug deal in Harlem
This is book two in the Black Stiletto series and it is already evident you must read these books in order. If you did not read Black Stiletto stop and do so before you start this book. This book picks up at the ending of book one. It also goes back and forth between the present day with Martin Talbot vising his mother Judy Cooper Talbot in the nursing home and current events in his life. The other part is 1959 with Judy Cooper telling her diary the newest escapes of the Black Stiletto. In this book she is after a drug dealer in Harlem who has her Japanese martial arts instructor's daughter held drugged in brothel. The dealer is also extorting money from her instructor to return the daughter. Judy goes into action and the problem is bigger and she discovers a crooked FBI agent. Do not let this description fool you the story is far from boring but is action packed, fast moving, some humor and romance, the story just flies. Raymond Benson writes with tight prose and grabs your attention. Martin daughter, Judy's granddaughter is attacked in New York City and is in hospital with a broken jaw. This gets me to wondering if in the future Gina may pick up her grandmother's role. Can not wait for the next book in the series. Book makes a nice relaxing fun read.
    Excellent, EXCELLENT, E-X-C-E-L-L-E=N-T
loved it. The story, narration, made it one of my favorite books to date.
    Absolutely hooked!
The voice actors do an amazing job at telling this fascinating story. It's so well written that I've been drawn in deeper with each word. I'm trying to pace myself as I go through the next 3 books in the series. I don't want the story to end yet!
