Sad stuff

This book doesn't work properly. It's unable to mark a word to see an explanation of marked word. I've already reported that, but no positive results obtained.

Title: The Impregnable Women

Author: Eric Linklater

Narrator: John Lee

Format: Unabridged

Length: 9 hrs and 11 mins

Language: English

Release date: 05-17-13

Publisher: Audible Studios

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

The Next Great War begins, and soon all Europe is involved. The war lasts a year - and then the women, robbed of husbands and sweethearts and sons, grow doubtful of the benefits of military policy, and begin to think that victory will come too late to do them any good. But what can they do? A remedy was discovered by Aristophanes about 2,350 years ago. It is re-discovered and reapplied. And it is again successful.

This is an Aristophanic comedy, and takes some Aristophanic liberties. It is satirical when the author pleases and when he cares to be serious he is very serious indeed. There is no monotony. The story shifts from realism to wild burlesque; from earnest appeal to uproarious extravagance.

The final scenes are in Edinburgh. Aristophanes made his insurgent women seize the Acropolis - here they take possession of Edinburgh Castle, as tall an eminence, and hold it against the infuriated men. The fight for the castle is the culminating incident in a vigorous and many-sided novel.

About the Author: Eric Linklater (1899-1974) wrote scores of novels for adults and children. He was also a journalist in India, commander of a wartime fortress in the Orkney Islands, and rector of Aberdeen University.

Title: Kept

Author: Alec Waugh

Narrator: Christine Rendel

Format: Unabridged

Length: 10 hrs and 28 mins

Language: English

Release date: 04-30-13

Publisher: Audible Studios

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

A rich tale centred around the lives of Marjorie Fairfield, a beautiful and penniless young woman who is the mistress of a wealthy business man; and the symbolically named Ransom Heritage, one of the many young men who were cast adrift after the First World War ended and who has been abruptly deprived of a sense of purpose, ambition, and hope. Around these young people and their circle whirls the carefree society of fashionable postwar London - a raucous, glamorous, and perhaps slightly shrill world of cocktails and nightclubs, tea dances and illicit tête-à-têtes. Waugh depicts a frenetic society where all too many people are "kept" in some way - financially, by a well-off lover, inherited capital, an unwanted husband; or more figuratively, by a reputation, a title - a relationship, even.

Alec Waugh (1898-1981) was a British novelist born in London and educated at Sherborne Public School, Dorset. Waughs first novel, The Loom of Youth (1917), is a semi-autobiographical account of public-school life that caused some controversy at the time and led to his expulsion. Waugh was the only boy ever to be expelled from The Old Shirburnian Society.

Despite setting this record, Waugh went on to become the successful author of over 50 works, and lived in many exotic places throughout his life which later became the settings for some of his texts. He was also a noted wine connoisseur and campaigned to make the cocktail party a regular feature of 1920s social life.

Title: Onkels Drm

Author: Fjodor M. Dostojevskij

Narrator: Karsten Pharao

Format: Unabridged

Length: 5 hrs and 43 mins

Language: English

Release date: 04-19-13

Publisher: Viatone

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

(Hakon Stangerup, Dansk Litteratur Historie)
