Fantastic!

If you could sum up The Serpent Sword in three words, what would they be?

Taking up this book based on the comment about it being a good one for Bernard Cornwell fans, of which I am a huge fan, it started a bit slow. But I stayed with it and was rewarded by a gripping tale every bit as worthy of the genre. The tale covers a wide array of emotional tides other than revenge and grief. Mr. Harfly weaves this tale well and makes it a hard book had to put down. I look forward to the next two books to see what happens to the boy who became a warrior, Beobrand.

Have you listened to any of Barnaby Edwardss other performances before? How does this one compare?

I've never listened to any of Mr. Edwards' narrations but I am now a fan. It is difficult to remember that all of those voices are being said by one narrator and not an entire company of actors.

Amazing story, needs a warning in the description.

I purchased this book thinking it would be an epic story of honorable warriors accomplishing great feats of power. That's pretty much what I got. But when the author would go into detail about rape scenes and the like, it was disgusting. I saw no such warnings in the description of the book as I was contemplating the purchase, at least nothing obvious. But aside from that, it was a great book full of satisfying revenge and violence (minus the aforementioned scenes). So if there was a warning in the description notifying potential customers of the TYPES and EXTENT of violence, this would be a 5/5 star rating all-round.

WWII Homefront Struggles

I'm of two minds about this book. On one hand I think the author captured the rigid, dire and harsh realities of loss, war and grief. This story had all of the elements needed to portray WWII homefront life with historic accuracy. The blend of religiosity, domestic violence, and the paternalistic approach was probably how many people actually lived at the time. Grim but true.

On the other hand, the characters seemed so one dimensional and undeveloped. I never felt that I understood what motivated the actions and behaviors of these unlikable and almost card board cutout beings. There were places in the book where I really hated the story. I dreaded the predictable interaction between several of the family members.

To make this book work the author needed to find a way to breathe life into the characters. Instead it became just like the joke about the people we all know who love to regale you with what I call the litany of disaster. You know the stuff--and then his right leg fell off, and then the dog died and then the house burned down--and then...and so on.

In the end, while this was probably an accurate portrayal of life during WWII for some people, I had trouble feeling empathy and connection with the characters and the story.

Just a Good Story of the Pain of Real Life

The book is a good story, well told, and superbly read of the pain and ordeals of real life in a small town. A bit overdramatic at times, but that was ok. I think most people will really enjoy. I am glad I tried something a bit different.

The story is set during World War II. It follows the members of the Beecher family. We learn about Jonathan, the father who lost his wife to cancer, his two sons Matthew and Luke and his daughter Mary. We see that each character is not perfect and they each have their own vulnerability and challenges. They are after all human.

Johnathan made a promise to his late wife on her deathbed not to marry again and he believes he has to honor that promise and he works hard to keep his store and keep his promise. Matthew the oldest son left town to try and be more independent. and ends up on an island in the Pacific working as a contractor. Luke the younger son is reckless and joined the army against his father's wishes.

this book should be read by every high school senior. a real look at the early 1900.

the story is more on point in 2017 then it was in 1972 and it was written.

Excellent

Although this story takes place at the time of the Great Migration mid 1800s ~ the relationships and characters and the challenges they face with government corruption is timeless. The characters are perfectly sketched for the reader, by that I mean they're lifelike with heroic attributes as well as tragic flaws. The main character Joseph is a strong character and Caldwell has the reader rooting for this tough Irishman throughout. I read this book years ago. A movie was also made but was nowhere near as good as the book. I loved the audio presentation here.

An old favorite

Melodramatic, in a style no longer used by most writers, Captains and. Kings is an old favorite of mine. My dad and I read these books by Taylor Caldwell when I was a young adult, so part of my pleasure listening to this audiobook was my memories of my dad.

As to the content of this story, I remembered in particular the idea that world bankers ruled the political scene for at least the Western world. I don't think that's true in particular but we certainly know that money plays a huge part in politics and that people in governments and high positions conspire against other people and other nation states. Lots of things were interesting in this story but our language has changed and melodramatic novels are not generally the rule these days. Still this one is worth a listen.

Excelente libro

Un libro de historias cortas que te mantienen en vilo, a filo de la butaca por así decirlo. Con una prosa muy descriptiva que te transporta al momento y al lugar de la historia. Los finales no son lo mejor, pero creo que eso no importa, ya que el trayecto de el relato es el que te hace vibrar más que el final.

I grew up

I first read this collection newly released, more than 20 years ago. I was astonished by the freshness of it. Now I have some experience as a reader and re-reading Doce cuentos I am astonished how strangely old-fashioned they are. Not bad at all, Márquez can write splendidly, he keeps the rhythm and is utterly colourful. But the topics are somewhat inmature, somehow childish, like a wild, talented teen-ager composing mad, márquezesque stories with high level of predictability. There are some that work, but the most of them don't. Times changes and some writings stand simply outdated. Or this is only me growing too old for playfulness? Maybe.

The narrator was unnecessarily fast for me, I struggled for the first hour to keep the line. When you're a native he is surely OK.

Richly narrated, sweet and sorrowful

What made the experience of listening to The Velvet Hours the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed the slow, detailed pace of the book. It was relaxing and intriguing at the same time. I didn't realize until i finished the book that it was inspired by a real apartment found in Paris a few years ago. The story spun around that is very moving.

Who was the most memorable character of The Velvet Hours and why?

Marthe's collections, they are described loving and in great detail.

Any additional comments?

My only tiny criticism is that the author didn't seem to research the details clothing of the time periods she is describing enough. I'm a historical reenaactor and wear clothing from all of the periods described in the book from 1890s through the 1940s. The author wrote the descriptions of corsets and underpinning fit from a very modern point of view assuming they would be painful to wear. For example ALL corsets made and fitted properly can be laced my the wearer and laced from the back. There is no need to create something special. A correctly fitted corset also never digs into one's bones. As a seamstress Marthe would never create something that didn't fit right. It distracted me a little bit at times not appropriate to the narrative.

Great read/ listen.

Wonderful story. Very fascinating. Grandmother and granddaughters growing relationship is very meaningful. I Highly recommend.

Not at all what I expected...

but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The intertwining stories were much richer than the framed story I was expecting. Although I'm not a big fan of love stories, this kept my interest.

I quickly became absorbed in this romantic novel woven into WWII history. You will want to know what comes next...

Love this stuff.

But it had some inaccuracies that didn't make sense. It wasn't enough to make me stop listening because it was a good listen. I just don't understand the point of killing off his daughter Margaret as a newborn. It's nowhere near as shameful as Showtime's The Tudors mishmashing Margaret and Mary into one person-and I didn't stop watching-but still. Ah well. There's not much out there that focuses on Owen and Jasper, so, for that, I'm grateful to Mr. Riches.

Needs More Emotion

I enjoyed the historic aspect of the book. However, the narrator's delivery invoked very little emotion, and did not bring the characters to life. A less refined, more impassioned narrator could have greatly enhanced the listening experience.

Great story, poor narrator

I am a major history buff and I especially love the Tudor stories so I was really looking forward to this trilogy. The story itself is good and definitely worth a read if like me you enjoy this type of history. I didn't know much about Owen Tudor before so it was very interesting. What let this audiobook down was the narrator, who I unfortunately have to say was extremely poor. All voices and characters sounded the same, he was extremely robotic and wasn't 'acting' the story as well as I'm used to other narrators doing. I felt like it was just any old person reading the book to me with no real experience of being a narrator. I am definitely going to read the next book in the trilogy Jasper and I am relieved it is narrated by somebody different, hopefully they will be a lot better.

Not recommended

Dreadful narrator .... had to stop after a few chapters. Too slow and deliberate with wooden delivery - in particular of the dialogues.

Disappointing

My Audible library contains every Alan Furst book. This is the weakest. If your new to Furst, start with The Polish Officer.

Good book

Good, not great. The books of Furst that I'm familiar with all deal with pre-war years and, while I liked them, after a few, I found they started sounding the same. I couldn't distinguish them. This book deals with the war, specifically the French resistance. It is fairly short, but in that time, Furst has solid characters and gives an interesting view of how the resistance operated.

Decent Insight into Life in Occupied France but...

This is more or less a micro tale or abridged presentation of how the French resistance came to be and existed during the Nazi occupation of France. I expected it to include a lot about the destruction and disruption caused by the resistance, but that was very minimal.

The reader was excellent and his work with the sexy parts was fabulous. The author's handling of the sexy stuff was really good. We don't need details when our imagination is stimulated.

My viewpoint of the story comes from my travels and my reading. I have vacationed in France for over 100 nights on several trips since 1996 (mostly in Paris) and have represented French businesses for 15 years. I recently read a few excellent books that dealt with occupied France including "The Nightingale" by Kristen Hannah (fiction), "When Paris Went Dark" by Ronald C. Rosbottom (nonfiction), Between Silk and Cyanide: A Codemaker's War, 1941-1945 by Leo Marks (nonfiction).

What was really freaky for me was that in " A Hero of France" much of it takes place exactly where we have stayed may times. That would be the current Artus hotel, formerly the Buci Latin on Rue de Buci, just across from the Mabillon metro and about a block from the St. Germain des Pres church and metro. The book refers to the shops and stalls on that small street. Then there is the Rue Dauphine which intersects de Buci and where the hero lives in a hotel. That hotel is likely one of the hotels that exists today and I suspect the one where one can go for live jazz and nice adult beverages. Also, there is a scene in the book which reminds me of the famous French female couple Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas.

LOVED the last quarter of this book...

Narration: Kirsten Potter is one of my favorite historical romance narrators. I love how she does the accents, her male voices are on point and she makes stories more interesting.

Story: I really like Angeline Fortin and the last 25% of this story shows the passion, excitement and action I look forward to when I read/listen to her books. This story felt a bit long and about half way in it was getting boring. But I am soooo glad I finished it because that last quarter of the book Makes everything make sense and so exciting. This is a past life/reincarnation/Dejavu story of a love that survives death, travels time and countries, a love for ever and always. Beautiful!!

A love story to fall in love with

Usually reading time travel stories saddens me deeply. Leaving people one loves behind and moving on was always the part that weighed my heart down but not so here. AF does a fabulous job keeping the story upbeat and happy. Time travel is like believing in Santa Clause. You know it's not real and yet that does not reduce the ache of longing for it to be real. I absolutely adored this book

Awesome story by an awesome narrator..

I read this book the first time in 2013, and I loved it then. I listened to it over the past couple of day and loved it again. I had forgotten that there were 2 people inside the same body, Mikah and Hero, not trying to see who the predominate one was but to live harmoniously until Mikah could figure out what was going on. How could Mikah know absolutely everything about Heros castle when she was from the 21st century and this was now 1856? Not to mention shes met the man shes been dreaming about most of her life.

Sometimes I mention in a review that it seemed everyone was naked because the author never gave her character clothes. In this book Ms. Fortin has described every bit of clothing and everything about every single room imaginable. It was a little much for me but I know a lot of you like all that description. There are pages and pages of it. It was annoying to me but not so much that it took away from the story. Its simply information that might be helpful to those who love descriptions and a warning to those who dont like so much of it.

I did like Mikah/Hero and Ian/Jace but I had forgotten about what happened at the end of part 2. I really, really hated that part. BUT it ended up being a perfect, perfect time travel novel. Yeah, I cried and it was worth every single tear.

Besides hating Daphne (and I certainly wasnt surprised that she was one of the bad guys) I absolutely loved the Duke of Beaumont, Hero's father. With his touch of Alzheimers the author gave him the funniest and most loving lines in the book. His interruptions of Hero and Ian was just hilarious.

There was several love scenes, explicit love scenes.
