Probably would have enjoyed this when I was age 13

I believe this is for young adults/teens. The story had no depth. The summary sounded so good, I started to purchase two books featuring this couple at the same time, I'm so glad I did not.

Poor Narration

What disappointed you about The Anatomist's Wife?

Never got to the story because narrator read every sentence the same. Very annoying.

I put off reading this series because of some negative reviews. I finally broke down and got the first book and was pleasantly surprised. It is a good, solid and entertaining read. I immediate read the next two books and enjoyed them as well.

A Victorian Puzzle...A very good read

A weekend party at a highland castle and a gentle woman is murdered in the maze.

Lady Darby, a talented artist and the disgraced widow of a famous anatomist, spent the last 16 months hiding out at the castle with her sister and brother-in-law. Lady Darby and the insufferable Mr. Gage, a friend of her brother-in-law and guest at the house party, are tasked with uncovering of a murderer. What follows is the puzzle Piece by piece.

I found the character development in the story very good and the story more than held my interest. Unlike some other reviewers, I enjoyed the narrator. I plan to read the rest of the books in this series.

Probably good for a 14 year old

Nearly returned this one. The story is predictable, the reader pretentious and the herione is not particularly loveable. It's something I would have enjoyed as a teenager, not quite a bodice ripper, but definately a romance(ish).

I love sweet historical romance stories. Especially mail order bride stories. This story has some great unexpected twists in the plot. The ending was happy but I wanted a bit more. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a sweet (clean) entertaining story.

Utterly satisfying!

As one of Diana Gabaldon's huge fan base, I came to this eighth "big book" expecting it to be wonderful -- and I was not disappointed!

Written in my own Heart's Blood weaves four separate story lines effortlessly together, resolving all the cliff-hangers from An Echo in the Bone (while introducing some tempting new questions), enlarging our understanding of the characters -- and providing heart-stopping thrills pretty well all the way through!

When I get a new Outlander book, I find I have to read it very, very fast -- just to be sure everyone I care about will survive -- then I can go back and re-read it slowly, savouring all the delightful details, fascinating historical information and character development. And this is where the audio version really comes into its own: my first race through the book is always done on my Kindle, but enjoying all the details with Davina Porter's wonderful reading (she really is one of the very best readers around!) is utterly satisfying.

No spoilers in this review, I'm afraid -- but I cannot recommend this book too highly!

It's everything I wished for!

Diana Gabaldon and Amy Harmon (my favourite authors) have written some amazing books and I rank all of their books equally at the very top of my listening tree. Written In My Own Heart's Blood is a book I have been eagerly anticipating for four years and it is everything I hoped it would be.

What other book might you compare Written in My Own Heart's Blood to and why?

At first I was going to say that I haven't read any other books that I could compare to this one but that wouldn't be true. The first one was named Outlander and was the story of a time traveler named Claire and a young Scotsman named Jamie.

Which scene was your favorite?

I had many favourite scenes but there were a couple of notables that I keep thinking of over and over again. One would be when Bree was reading the letter she found from Frank Randall. It showed just how much he loved and treasured Bree and how he had done all he could to prepare her for the life ahead.

UTRED AND THE DANES

I like my history with a healthy dose of political fact, intrigue. treachery. love and blood! Bernard Cornwell always provides all of these, His research is impeccable and his delivery spot on. The story of Utred continues to unravel in the entertaining fashion that you come to expect with Cornwells' novels and did I mention the blood ? The narration is not just great it is outstanding ! All the characters live just as intended and the delivery of the action grabs you and doesn't let go. Thank you Jonathon Keeble.You just cannot resist moving on in the series.

Is this a bad elementary school play?

This story started out briskly enough, and the subject matter was interesting. I also enjoyed that it was coming from the perspective of the maid, as I expected sort of an an "Upstairs, Downstairs" feel. The first road bumps happened with the introduction of the Shippens. The stilted, uneducated dialogue combined with the cardboard cut out characters brought me back to the days of watching awkward, albeit enthusiastic, grade school dramatizations. I appreciate that the story was well researched, yet have trouble reconciling that with the naive story telling. Nothing had a colonial period feel, except for the extensive detail given to the clothing. Clara as a character was more fully fleshed out than any other, yet the reader is still left to imagine how she leapt from timid subservient, to history changing revolutionary, as there is so little growth in this direction. The audio edition is even worse. I played it at book club, and there were accusations of the voice being a computer auto read feature, as it is so stilted and halting. And the awkward impersonations brought me back, again, to an elementary school auditorium. While fun to brush up on my dusty American History, this historical fiction novel proved very disappointing.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Daughters of the Dragon?

I am about half way through listening to the book. Unfortunately I am so distracted by the awful narration that I have to keep going back to hear the story. I am only persevering because the actual story is so interesting but I am ot convinced I will be able to make it all the way. Such a pity.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Valerie Gilbert?

Anybody.

Was Daughters of the Dragon worth the listening time?

It is only out of respect to the author and the subject matter that I am continuing to listen to the excruciating narration.

This is not fiction.

If history is written by the victors, how do we keep finding massive cover-ups like this? Holocaust deniers, masked and hidden histories? The story unfolds in painful and specific detail. I appreciate that. Truth does indeed help minimize shame. Great story telling. Don't quite understand where the narrator is coming from in her interpretation. Sounded condescending. But maybe not.

A Cry For Womens Justice

While I kept thinking, This is the script for a drama serial" , I kept reading because it was for book club. By chapter 25 I knew it was the right way. This is an excellent way to learn why there is so much acrimony in the area. It is also a Cry for many women, not just Korean.

Absolutely, I love all books about The Titanic! I wish I had more titles in mind to order more! This was fiction? But I could definitely see reality.

The grandmother was able to keep quiet and not pass judgement throughout the entire story on to the granddaughter. Lovely story!

Love Titanic!

I loved this book! I was very well done. Instead of a single time line, this book want from 1912 to 1982! I fell in love with all the characters. I loved the ending, it made me cry! I would recommend this book highly!

It was genius having to narrators with very different dialects! The ladies brought life to the characters!

Such a lovely story and so well performed! I loved the readers voice and accent. Soothing and perfect for this story.

I couldn't put this down

I couldn't put this down. Once I got over the confusion of Maggie and Margaret and Peggy the book was a delightful, although sad, story. I was teary in Chapter 3 before they ever got on the Titanic. Seamus and his letters! I'm glad this wasn't a re-telling of James Cameron's movie (which was not as good as earlier movies) and was instead the tale of a group of friends from a small Irish village. My grandparents left Ireland at about the same time so I was very moved by the story. I usually don't like audiobooks with multiple narrators but this worked well to differentiate the change in time and POV. The ending was a bit predictable (there were subtle clues) but I enjoyed this very much.

I am interested in Viking history. I am working on my masters, and my thesis is within the field of Viking studies. The author has a wonderful grasp of the history of the northmen.

Another great tale of Raven's exploits

Continuing the Raven Saga, the author again wound a believable tale of the plundering Norsemen.

Good book if a bit rough

well told but a little rough. the narrative was well done I don't give 5 star rating unless a book is stellar so I would recommend this book for all who like me love historical fiction.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I had to go to half speed to follow him. The narration ran far too fast for easy listining

Hobie's introduction into bounty hunting as he follows Luke after the bank robbers.

What does Jack Garrett bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

His depiction of the characters make them more real than my reading about them myself.

Some of the violence was too gory for me, so effected me negatively.

This is book 2 of Mr. Johnstone's series of Luke Jensen, Bounty Hunter and ranks among the other Johnston's book the same. He keeps your interest from page 1 to the end.

What other book might you compare Dead Shot to and why?

I can not really compare it to any other books written by the Johnston's, for I have only read the 1st.

What does Jack Garrett bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

As I have noted in my review of Book 1 by this author, Book 2 kept me up at nights. I think Mr. Garrett is an excellent narrator and I could listen to him every book I read. He has a gruff voice which gives all his male characters different sounds and very mild for the ladies and others.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I can not point out any particular moments that moved me, for Luke handles himself extremely well in all the situations he finds himself in. He places Luke in very serious predicaments and he always comes up with an answer or solution to keep you interested and not want to put his books down. I think he depicts the Old West as I have visualized it in my mind since childhood. I would recommend his books to all that enjoy good old Western stories. Suitable for younger Western lovers.

Any additional comments?

I am just now getting ready to start book 3 and I can't wait to get immerged again. High O Silver Away! Ha! I mostly listen to his books rather than read them, for I find it more enjoyable.

Im still enjoying the Johnstones writing. They have crafted some wonderful stories. Their characters are well crafted and fit within the Western genre. I highly recommend this book and series. I have recently discovered the Johnstones and have enjoyed all the books I have read/listened to.
