A Great YA "Issues" Novel

What did you love best about Speechless?

It's a great concept - the biggest gossip in school taking a vow of silence. Full of Chelsea's snarky internal dialog, which comes across perfectly in the audio-book version.

What other book might you compare Speechless to and why?

A little bit like Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. But much more lighthearted.

What does Emily Bauer bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Again - the snarky inner dialog of the main character, Chelsea, was almost written to be read into your ears. Emily Bauer did a great job bringing the sarcasm, compassion, and insecurities of Chelsea to life.

This is one of the best sequels I have ever read

This is one of the best sequels I have ever read. The characters are well drawn, and although I suspected the ending, it was very well done. I think this should be a required set of books for every early high school student. I would like it in the lower middle grades, but unfortunately there are themes too heavy for that age group.

I really enjoy this book

It's a perfect follow up to "The Body of Christopher Creed." I would love to say more but I feel like I would give away spoilers. Just know that it's a fantastic book!

rough draft?

I have read several of her other books, and liked them. This one, though, reads like a rough draft. The characters seem flat, and the "plot twist" is clumsy and obvious. Maybe I missed something, but a lot of the story seemed repetitive and unnecessary.

Awesome book :)

It met all expectations I had for it. I wasn't sure exactly how it would turn out but I was absolutely satisfied with the ending. Though I will admit I figured out the twist about 42 pages from the ending. Still loved it though!

Suspensful and fun. A good read. I didn't have a clue as to the real truth till the very end!

Nice, mindless fiction

Would you listen to Belles again? Why?

I would listen again. I love to listen to audio books while I work, so I need a story that is interesting, but not too complicated. This fits the bill.

What does Julia Whelan bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

I love Julia Whelan as a narrator. Her voice is pleasant, and she doesn't fall into a lot of the pitfalls that other narrators of fiction aimed at young women/girls tend to (i.e. too whiny, valley girl sounding, etc). I found this series because I looked her up to find out other books she has narrated after listening to several. My only complaint is some of the accents were fairly lame sounding.

Any additional comments?

This is an easy listen. If you like to listen to books that make you think, or want something profound, eloquent, etc - skip this.

Beautiful, Romantic Story & Excellent Narration!

Would you consider the audio edition of Graffiti Moon to be better than the print version?

Yes!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ed. I loved his back story and his personality.

What about the narratorss performance did you like?

Everything! Hearing the accents and different voices made such a difference. All the narrators did an excellent job.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! Even though I had a good idea where the story was going, I couldn't wait to see how it all played out. The style of writing is completely addicting and beautiful.

Sometimes when I have a book I'm really looking forward to, I find myself procrastinating when it comes to actually reading it. (Mostly because I have such high hopes for it and I fear disappointment.) This was one of those books for me. I fell in love with the premise of Graffiti Moon months ago, and bought it as soon as it became available. I finally just made myself start it, and I'm so glad to say that I absolutely loved it! It left me grinning for a long time after I finished it. It was one of those books that fuels my love for reading even more.It reminded me slightly of An Abundance of Katherines by John Green which I also loved. I just love when you get to see the thought processes of the characters. I like to know why they do and say the things that they say and do. It was a really interesting story too, and the writing style was the kind that I really enjoy reading. So many of the phrases were just beautiful, and the descriptions were so vivid that I felt like I was right there with the characters.The narrators were awesome! The main girl and main guy did excellent jobs, which just made the whole experience even better. Quote: "Where's the fire, Lucy Dervish?" "In me. Under my skin." (a thought, not an actually quote, but I loved it)

Adolescence, Art, Amazing

I love this book. I rented it from the library 3 times and finally decided I had to own it. This book is so fun and engaging. It is smart and witty. The adolescents in this book are written the way I think they should be, the way I remember myself. A good kid who sometimes makes the wrong decisions, but often making the right ones. These kids aren't just walking bags of hormones. They are thoughtful, caring, fun and flawed. The book is also very funny. The interactions between the two main characters are real and you feel for them. The narrators are great. I love the accents.

I just love Francisco Stork's style of writing and this 3rd book was moving, difficult, and you so want Kate and Mary to survive what life is throwing at them. Kate and Mary are two sisters with a strict minister father they love and a mother who has been in a vegetative state for two years since a car accident. Kate and Mary's lives are changed after their mother's accident and when her father refuses to keep her in a facility, she comes to their home; with some outside help to care for their mother. Mary has always been a gifted painter but finds it difficult to paint since the accident. Kate has secretly applied to Stanford; her wish to become a doctor and help others. Suddenly their father dies and they are pressured to make decisions about their mother, their home and their life. Stork uses imagery and the sister's thoughts, words, and actions to describe their lives before his death. As Mary and Kate struggle with their love and faith, they will meet people who help them deal with the crises that demand decisions during their time of sorrow. Mary and Kate have such different personalities but their love for each other and their mother are steadfast. It is how they choose to move forward that is so compelling. This is a gripping yet beautiful story of the Romero sisters, I highly recommend this. It is deep and I know some students I am definitely going to book talk this to in September.

Review of Irises

Here's what I love about Francisco X. Stork: He writes inspirational stories without feeling the need to preach.

I saw it in Marcelo in the Real World, then again in The Last Summer of the Death Warriors, and now... he completely turns away from the male-focused stories and focuses instead on two girls, sisters, ages 16 and 18, and manages to write with such an honest and clear voice I found my heartstrings being tugged at again and again.

While I didn't love this story as much as I loved Marcelo and Summer, I still found it had honest merit, and I could relate to it. I grew up in a fairly restricted environment, and my sympathies were definitely inclined toward the sisters.. but I also found myself disbelieving some things as well - such as the scenes with the new, young pastor.

Touching story

If you could sum up The Probability of Miracles in three words, what would they be?

honest expression of teenage feelings facing death.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The main character, because she could still be surprised by life even though she didn't want to be. She also learned that her attitude and comments, no matter how true, could hurt others. License is not grace.

What about Emma Galvin???s performance did you like?

He voice and narration were perfect for the main character and all the others.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The last scene when she followed the flamingo and her whole family was with her.

This story has stayed with me for a long time. I was really rooting for each person.

Very bittersweet

I didn't really get to into the book on like the first 3 chapters but after I kept reading more and more I didn't want it to end! It was absolutely fantastic and I sat and cried at the end. This book is a definite must have.

Ashleigh is now living on a small island in Michigan with her mom. Not only is it "-1000 degrees" it's also hard for her to thaw out. Within the first day of being at her new home she meets Nathalie, her soon-to-be new best friend. Not long after moving in, Ashleigh is drooling over two very hot guys Chase and Josh. She's attracted to both of them, but the one that's got her "heart beating" and "toes curling is off limits" due to him already having a girlfriend (who happens to be her friend Nathalie).

Though she is trying to avoid Josh it's nearly impossible when he and his dad are working on fixing up her mom's bed and breakfast. Though she likes Chase, she can't stop thinking about Josh. And I don't blame her I can't even stop thinking about Josh. But will an accident, that should never have happened, change how she wants things? And will she break her vow not to have a boyfriend until she gets older?

I recommend this book.

Cute teenage drama

This was a fun little read about a fish out of water in a new town after her parentsâ divorce. Quick read, very fun.

Snowed In -- Cute but Predictable

Ashleigh and her mother move from Texas to a small island on the Great Lakes after her parents divorce and open up a bed and breakfast called "Ashleigh Sneax". Ashleigh has always enjoyed dating around. Never more than three dates with the same guy is her motto. But here on the island there aren't many boys, and the majority already have girl friends, according to her new friend Natalie.

Still, Ashleigh manages to meet a cute guy named Chase in a fudge shop who asks her on a date. And she's pretty pleased with herself for finding someone so fast. But is it too soon?

Not long after she meets Josh Wynter, a gorgeous guy who's working with his dad to help remodel the hotel. And he seems to like her, he even asks her to come watch his winter volleyball game on the beach. But when she shows up to watch she's met with the sight of him lip locked with Natalie. And one thing becomes clear: Natalie is his girl friend. But she was sure he liked her. He'd asked her to his game hadn't he?

Suddenly for the first time ever Ashleigh becomes jealous and the story follows her funny tale of attraction to a boy who's off limits. And their inevitable secret affair.

The book is short and very predictable. But the prose was funny and delightful. Natalie's character seemed kind of unrealistic and childish at times but I feel that the author intended it to be that way. Ashleigh and Josh have great chemistry, and I could definitely see myself rereading this one again in the future.

Really really awesome

So first off, I loved this book. The ending is what totally made it for me. Maybe it was cheesy, but it was funny and romantic, so that worked for me. Only a couple things.....I thought it was weird how fast they started to like each other. I mean they had conversations that I don't think anyone would have the first time they meet.
