In this conversation Michael and Bailey examines issues of pastoral accountability, elder qualifications, and servant leadership regarding spiritual authority, obedience vs rebellion, and unhealthy power dynamics in churches. We wrestle with questions around how far a pastor's authority reaches, if titles afford leaders spiritual authority over congregants, and how much members should submit.

Walking through Scripture chronologically, we explore proof texting, congregational rights, and verses often used to justify absolute pastoral authority over issues of church politics, spiritual manipulation, and cult dynamics. We then see a fuller biblical context showing leaders are called to serve without domineering—being examples rather than demanding respect by position alone.
There's tension around authority, submission, and avoiding foolish division or authoritarian abuse. Plurality leadership that is accountable cares for souls but doesn't lord power.
With humility and mutual respect, the body of Christ works best when no pride exists and hearts are transformed by Christ's love, not sterile clergy/laity divides. Do we need reformation regarding these unhealthy ecclesiological power structures and leadership dynamics overemphasizing charisma versus integrity and community trust?
