Waste of time

All this book tells you is there is still a whole lot we don't know about genetics, well no kiddin Sherlock... Do not recommend getting this.

A very good to read

A very good to read, fluid in style, balancedly and friendly informative of how a modern genetics underlined by the historicity of evolution (in broad sense) with powerful genomics tools could lead to an understanding of the disease and biological traits at realistic levels. Not a good read for the reductionist and comfortable seeker who sees simply mystic, "selfish" genes doing their job behind everything in a contextless fashion. A must read for the young naturalist or physician at the first steps of her or his career if she or he wants to start with a realistic picture of genetics and disease development.Furthermore, a book written by an actively working geneticist in the field, in contrast to books of similar genre overflowed by the rush popular arguments of second or third handers.

A Genetic Look at How our Quantities of Life effect our Quality of Life.

Barack Obama introduced to the U.S. Senate "The Genomics and Personalized Medicine Act of 2006". Greg Gibson, author of "It Takes a Genome", advises us that the title of this Act alone is indicative of how future medicine will have have to confront the dynamic nature of disease. "Dynamic" is the optimum word here since it tears down the traditionally static portraiture that we've been given of disease and the genome. Gibson, with this book seeks to challenge the idea that there is a "gene for this disease" and a "gene for that disease", and replacing it with the more accurate view of a variety of genes that are networked and talking to each other. Gibson's next mission is to show how changes in our environment and our lifestyles disrupts how this network functions.

Perhaps the greatest virtue of this book is how balanced Gibson approaches the idea of a genome that conflicts with modernity. I must admit, I picked up the book expecting (and, admittedly, welcoming) a certain amount of propaganda about how civilization is antagonizing our health. I didn't get it, and this is to the credit of the author. He is far more realistic, neither condemning nor condoning our contemporary lifestyles, but instead hoping to underscore the fact that, yes, it is largely the way we live that is determining the exacerbation of certain diseases. He presents his case through the course of eight chapters, covering Breast cancer, diabetes, hygiene, AIDS, depression and Alzheimer's. Most of our lifestyle habits that Gibson itemizes are things we've already heard before and have had a finger waved at us - smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise etc.

Different accents and tones of voice for different people, though she can't really sound like a man.

When looking at the title, I thought the author had ridden on horseback around Argentina, not used transport and ridden when opportunities arose. I found the historical interludes interesting but sometimes they took me away from the story so was difficult to concentrate on it sometimes.

What disappointed you about On a Hoof and a Prayer?

I had the hard copy of this book sitting on my shelf for the past five years and was really looking forward to reading/listening to it. Having travelled to South America, I was expecting to relive some of my memories. Instead, the book was a very average travelogue that didn't really do more than account for a British woman's summer holiday abroad.

What could Polly Evan have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Evan's occasional attempt at humour rarely hit the mark and she took way too long before she chronicled the history of Argentina. There was nothing really remarkable in what she did, to the point where I struggled to complete the book. It wasn't engaging, it felt like I was made to sit through a slide night for someone I didn't know and didn't really care about.

What character would you cut from On a Hoof and a Prayer?

The author. It appears Evan cut the horses already - despite the title, there's a lot of travel not done on the back of a horse.

An African tale well worth listening to

Tony Fitzjohns story is fascinating, and John Telfers narration fits very well.

There are a number of audiobooks available that proclaim that if you've spent time on the African continent, they will take you back when you listen to them. Having lived on the African continent for a while, not one of the books has given that feeling of reminiscence.

Except this one.

The story is first class - from the tale of when he first encountered Christian the lion (who was bought by John Rendall and Anthony "Ace" Bourke from Harrods department store in London, England, in 1969), through his experiences working closely with the tremendous George Adamson, this is a story for anybody who has been fortunate enough to spend time with African wildlife in their natural habitat.

Even if you haven't been to Africa, but you have an interest in wildlife conservation, please take time to download this book - you will not be disappointed.

From the multitude of books I have read and listened to, there are only a few that I would go back to again and again. This, along with Ray Mears' excellent 'My Outdoor Life', are two of them.

Excellent - truly excellent.

Captivating story

One of the most interesting books I've listened to . If you find Africa and it's wildlife interesting , I can recommend this Audible book. It's well narrated too.

Highly Recommended

Tim Flannery reads his own book and does it well. He has a subtle and pleasant Australian accent. Reading would be even better if he paused a little longer between paragraphs, especially when embarking on a new subject. But most of the time its an absorbing and easy listen. Flannery is extremely knowledgeable and a very good communicator. He is also a devoted and effective campaigner on climate change having written several other books which are also well worth reading. In this volume he discusses his ideas on human society and mankind's future in the context of anthropology and the study of other cooperative organisms. His ideas are always interesting if at times a bit fanciful. Indeed, I found the most interesting parts of the book those that were devoted specifically to biology and science in general. His descriptions of the amazing complexity of ant colonies for instance are fascinating.

Light in paper, weighty in content.

Where does Here on Earth rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Not my favourite but not the worst. Near the top of my list.

I don't know. it's unlikely I'd be able to read the book as I doubt it's available in braille so this is my only way of accessing it.

Enjoyable successful learning experience

Two pleasant people chatting together about woodland birds makes for a relaxing way of learning birdsong which is quite an achievement. Stunning examples of the beauty of birdsong mixed with totally laid back teaching done through friendly conversation. Genius!

I've forgotten already

Easy enough to listen to and quite descriptive but they sometimes spend so long chatting about something that I would forget what bird they were talking about and there's nothing on the screen to remind me.

Accanto a queste situazioni emotive, in cui si intravede vividamente la somiglianza con l'uomo, vi sono anche chiare analogie di atteggiamenti conoscitivi come curiosità, meraviglia, capacità di apprendere e di usare strumenti. Egli non misconosce certo le differenze fra gli animali e l'uomo. La più grande fra esse è il senso morale o coscienza; ma anche per questa è possibile trovare una spiegazione scientifica, individuando la sua origine nell'istinto di socievolezza e di solidarietà che manifestano gli animali.

La prosa darwiniana è molto 'narrativa' e di grande chiarezza e l'ascolto ne risulta facilitato anche grazie alla perizia nella lettura di Eugenio Farn.
