Publisher's Summary:
The social and political revolutions of the 1960s are well documented, their effects still felt today. But it was the scientific revolutions that took place in the decade that have had the most profound and far-reaching consequences for how we live our lives in the 21st century. So many of the daily facts that we hold to be self-evident, from why the continents we live on are the way they are to our ability to communicate with someone on a different one from our own, are only possible thanks to the monumental advances made in '60s science.
In Science That Changed the World, Tim Radford takes us on a tour of the major scientific breakthroughs from the decade of revolution. Taking us as far back as the origin of the universe, Radford's storytelling examines the impact that each development continues to have on our lives today and how, in less than a decade, the world leapt and lurched forward into the modern era. Rich in detail, this is the account of the other 1960s revolution - of the science and scientists that irrevocably changed the world.

Putting it into perspective
Do you ever wonder why it's worth spending so much effort and money on 'impractical science'? Here are three examples: plate tectonics, big bang, and smallpox. What seemed small discoveries ultimately had global impacts, and it is fascinating to imagine how they continue to contribute. This is marvelous history.
OK, an inch deep but a mile wide.
Yes, expected a bit more
For example how can you talk about Plate Tectonics and NOT even mention the work of Alfred Wegener is beyond me.
Connect the dots
This book was an interesting read that kept me entertained through a long night shift. Great understanding of how a small thing like the understanding of the age of the sea floor helped save millions of lives 40 years later through earthquake detection etc.
My Comments on Science that Changed the World
Author Tim Radford presents four scientific achievements that have had remarkable influence in the course of last 50 years:
* Worldwide communications, which is influencing every activity of our lives
* Eradication of smallpox in 1977, after thousands of years harming humanity
* Plate tectonics displacements that permit know more about the destructive earthquakes
* Broader understanding of the universe that stimulates the construction of powerful telescopes suspended in the space
Is a well-written book, which adsorbs and stimulates to a continued reading until its end. Unfortunately Mr. Radford missed the exceptional findings and treatments related to medicine.
