Very good book. I could not put it down until I finished. Teaches us to all think of others and not ourselves.
wickedly funny and insightful
INTO WHITE is the story of LaToya, a high-schooler in Alabama who prays to Jesus to make her anything but black. The next morning â poof! â she wakes up blonde-haired and blue-eyed.
I confess, when I heard the premise of this book, I thought that it would either be a disaster or amazing, and Iâm here to report that itâs the latter. This is an off-the-wall, bonkers story â one thatâs full of deep insight, cutting social commentary, and emotional heartbreak, not to mention utterly fierce, wicked, goofy humor on every single page.
Toya has one of the most original voices Iâve read all year, so honest, charmingly odd, flawed but loveable, and funny as hell. Following her on her journey in her new skin is a revealing roller coaster ride, one that doesnât flinch or pull any punches when it comes to the experiences of being a young black woman in the South. This is a perspective that is sorely needed in YA, and I think this is a book that can start a lot of important conversations, while also simply being a funny and fabulous read.
In a broader sense, INTO WHITE touches on a lot of complicated and important themes, from family relationships to sexual assault. Itâs a rich read and â I venture to bet â unlike anything else thatâs waiting on your TBR list. I mean, at one point the character is riding in a stolen car with Jesus, talking about Twilight. If that sounds good to you, then please, please check out this book.

INTO WHITE is her first novel of hopefully many. She gave a Ted Talk in March of 2016 about her writing and experiences through life up until college. In it she states that she writes about things that her make angry, curious, happy, or some feeling that she does not even understand yet. She grew up in southern Alabama and is still a denizen of Alabama today. She lives with her husband and two rescue dogs (aaaawww)! She also works for the NPR branch in Birmingham.
In INTO WHITE we meet LaToya --- or Toya --- Williams, a black girl living in Edgewood, Alabama with a few problems. For starters, the white people in her town just cannot get themselves to get over the color of her skin and the black people at her school do not really like that much either with the exception of her older brother, Alex. Sweet Alex who wears weird T-shirts, collects quarters and is extremely smart.
