Great book

this book was so inspiring and the reader was amazing! defiantly one of my new favorite books! READ THIS BOOK!

Shades of "Thirteen Reasons Why" and "If I Stay"

I had this recommended very highly by a friend of mine. I downloaded the sample from Amazon, and liked what I read, so purchased it from Audible.

I'm glad I did. It's a really, really good book! It made me go on detours to continue listening, which is always a good sign :) With shades of "Thirteen Reasons Why" by Jay Asher and "If I Stay" by Gayle Forman it is obviously a very sad read, but I didn't find it as emotionally manipulative as it could have been. It was horrible to read about the kids being bullied, and how Liz Emerson slowly got convinced that suicide was the only way out.

I liked the way the book jumped in time - the chapter headers kept it from getting confusing, and the patchwork style of the book really worked for me.

I also liked that the ultimate outcome was kept under wraps until the very end. Just like in "If I Stay" it isn't made obvious right from the start, but enough hints are given that the reader is prepared for it to go either way.

The author was 18 when she wrote this! I'm terribly impressed!

Not even close to The Walls Around Us

I have a new writer crush on Nova Ren Suma. After rereading her latest, The Walls Around Us, thought I'd check out an earlier novel. It's listenable, but not as well developed, taking a long time to tell us what we knew would happen at the conclusion. The main character, Ruby is an unlikable tall tale of a shrew. Had to listen to how cool she was, but never felt why everyone was so awed and frightened by her; especially her sister. Don't like giving a negative review of a talented writer, but also don't want anyone who may read this to spend their hard earned, expensive credit on Imaginary Girls, either.

Rolicking fun mystery

This 2nd book in the Jackrabbit Junction series is firing on all cylinders and expands the cast of characters. We have the same fun crowd as before with Claire, Harley and his besties (my favorite is Manny), Ruby, her daughter Jess, and Mac. Add to the mix Claires mother Deborah, her younger sister Kate and the very hot bar owner Butch, and things in the Junction just got jittery.

They mystery is less mysterious this time around, but thats only because it relies again on the misdeeds of Rubys dead husband Joe. This time we have a different person he did wrong. If Joe was so rotten, its hard to believe that Ruby was so blind she didnt see it.

There is also a recurring thread about Mac having told Claire he loves her but that he doesnt want the rest of the world to know he said that. I found those parts of the story really annoying. They could potentially be true to how people really are, but it made me want to tell the character to man up. He said it, so he should own it.

Narrator Lisa Larsen shines again with her performance. The sound is professional, and with minimal slips she sounds great and clear all the way through. Generally, the listener will immediately know who is being voiced even without the tags. There is one time where Chester didnt sound gruff enough, but that was an exception and not the rule.

Full disclosure: I received a free audible download of this book from the narrator in exchange for an honest review. I have enjoyed this so much, though, that I plan on immediately buying the 3rd book in the series just so I know what happens next.

Recommended.

Be careful

I understand the point of trying not to take sides, to tell the story from the bully's point of view. But I wonder if the teenage kids reading this book will. In the last pages Sara seems to finally understand what she did but most of the book she blames Emma and everyone else for what she did. The author does a great job of capturing a high school girl's voice. So well I think young readers may agree. And it is not a neutral subject. Just like the Prince case it is fictionalizing there are people who harmed others. There are bullies. And Sara is a bully. Not a victim. I worry that's not always real clear and that sometimes the book makes bullying seem okay and excuses or downplays terrible behavior. If a young person I know were reading this book I would be sure I had conversations with them to make sure Sara didn't end up a hero.

Really enjoyed this book, since it was unabridged it was a little long, but it's a good story for anybody to read/listen. bullying is a real issue. Writing was amazing! love the way she described situations

Yes. I loved how the emotions came through the narrator's voice, I think she did a great job with the MC's voice/tone.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Tease?

****SPOILERS****Sarah realizing the difference between her defense mechanism and Brielle's. Some moments with Sarah and her mom, and Sarah and her brother Tommy. The developing relationship between Sarah and Carmichael. Sarah reading her letter at court.

No, first time listening to her. Will definitely check out her other performances.

Good Story

While I enjoyed the story, it was a little hard to get through. Bullying is tough and so many pieces to types of involvement. Easy read but little excitement.

Powerful story and performance

Faking Normal is Courtney C. Stevens debut novel, and its one Ive had on my radar for a few months since Im a realistic fiction fan. Its about a girl dealing with the aftermath of a traumatic event, and how she copes, and who she can turn to in her darkest hours.

We piece together a mystery in Faking Normal. We know that Alexi is hurting from an event that happened over the summer. We can see her hurt herself, and avoiding social events, but we dont know why. Alexi keeps it all inside, like the title says, and cant confide in her friends or family. Help comes from an unlikely source in the form of Bodee, a boy who is also suffering a great deal. Even though his pain is also so raw, or maybe because of that, he sees through Alexis façade and is able to get through to her the way that no one else can.

Though I havent been in Alexis specific situation, it felt to me that her behavior was realistic given the circumstances. We all have things we keep to ourselves, and the pain of Alexis secret felt very real. My heart went out to her, wanting her to reach out to someone for help, but understanding she was not physically or mentally ready to do so. She cuts as a coping mechanism, and another source of comfort are the lyrics the mysterious Captain Lyric leaves for Alexi on her desk at school.

Alexis friendship with Bodee is one of my favorite parts of the book. Sometimes people are there for you right when you need him, and Bodee is so sweet and careful with Alexi that he makes her feel truly safe.

I picked up the audiobook of Faking Normal, because I saw that one of my favorite narrators Emma Galvin performs it. Galvin does well with a variety of genres, but I think shes particularly successful with action packed reads like Divergent. That said, Galvin connects with the characters and makes Alexis pain feel real. Galvin uses a Southern accent to go with the books setting, and makes both the male and female voices sound distinct. Lyrics play an important part in the narrative, so this book is probably just as powerful in print, though I didn't feel like I was missing out with the audio.

Faking Normal is a powerful, emotional read along the same vein as Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. Alexis story arc is satisfying even though everything is not completely tied up at the end.

Great writing. Poor plot

Good writing. Witty. I only gave the story 3 stars because the plot could have been SO much better. For example, at one point there are hints of a very ,bad thing the main character did. The âbad thingâ was referred to several times, before revealing what had actually happened. I was beginning to think we were going to find out the main character was a serial killer or some other horrific fact. Turned out to be a very small incident.

It's a sad but true book. Thousands of teens commit or try to commit suicide all the time. But it had a happy ending with lots of twists and turns along the way.

I love Jennifer!!

I read dead girls don't lie first, not realizing she had wrote another book. And it became my favorite book ever in the whole wide world! I love murder mystery kinda books and when I found out about Breaking beautiful, I bought the book without knowing anything about it. But I'm not much of a reader so I found it on audible, and listened to it in two days. That was a great twist at the end and I loved this book. If I could, I would rate it 100stars not just five. Jennifer shaw wolf is my favorite author and she inspires me, I can't wait until she writes another book, hopefully she will. I also read dead girls don't lie as a book and got it on audible too, it still amazes me and I read it in 2016. Let's just see how long this book stays in my head, Love you Jennifer!!

She has a nice voice, but she pauses every two or three words, and sometimes her mouth is so dry that there's a distracting clicking sound.

Not finishing books is something I try to avoid, but this one was very tough to slog through. I had to increase the reading speed by at least 2x to be able to tolerate the narrator, and the frustration at the protagonist just made it worse.

This was a DNF for me. I just didn't care about the characters enough to finish. I was able to figure out what had happened without needing to hear the full story.

Unique sequel

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I would because, as a sequel to the first book in his series ("The Geography Club"), author Brent Hartinger has gone in a direction that was certainly novel and opened up new opportunities for growth and experience among his characters. The unique setting for this second installment was enlightening, informative, and relevant. Certainly a treat.

Would you be willing to try another book from Brent Hartinger? Why or why not?

Yes, and I have. As mentioned in earlier reviews, I appreciate Mr. Hartinger's respect for his characters: teens who are figuring out the world, are admittedly confused about lots of things (including their own behavior), and (most of all) speak like teens.

What does Josh Hurley bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

He's awesome. The author really retained the "teen voice" throughout this book series, but that could have easily been lost with poor narration. Mr. Hurley did a fantastic job conveying all that the characters are at this point in their lives.

AMAZING!

I thought the first book was great, but this one totally blew me out of the water! Had an amazing story, and wonderful read I can't wait to read the next one!

A fun follow on to Geography Club

A fun story following on from geography club,and sees Russell and his friends going to help our at summer camp supporting children. Found the story engaging.

Good Book

I fell in love with this book when I read it in 7th grade. Rereading it years later, I realize that not a whole lot happens throughout the middle of the book (it's basically just her trying to run away from people), but I still like it.

Couldn't put it down!

I read the book really quickly. It's an easy read and I enjoyed it so I looked for more books by this author. Found out Caroline B Cooney is a teen & young adult writer. But I have to say, it held my attention and I am going to get more of Caroline's books. Hey, I loved the Twilight series and those are teen books. So, who cares....I enjoy what I enjoy and this is a great author. Going back for more.

So simplistic!

I barely got through this book and in fact, started and stopped it several times. It is has very shallow story and while it is written from the point of view of a teenager, it seems as if it was written by and about a much younger person. Is this a young adult novel? Even at that, it still doesn't have much of a story line.

Great for younger audiences

As an adult I sometimes read YA books that catch my interest. Wanted is one of these. I enjoyed reading it. While I like more guessing in the plot, I felt it was a decent read. I read it in one day. Cooney is one of those authors that I would recommend to teens.
