Titre: Le Silence de la mer
    Auteur: Vercors
    Narrateur: Jean-Claude Dauphin
    Format: Unabridged
Durée: 4 hrs and 36 mins
    Langue: Français
    Date de publication: 06-10-11
    Éditeur: Audiolib
    Evaluation: 4 sur 5 sur 1 votes
    Genres: Classics, European Literature

  • A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man Audiobook by James Joyce

Title: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
    Author: James Joyce
    Narrator: John Lee
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 35 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-28-08
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 270 votes
    Genres: Classics, European Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Through a series of brilliant epiphanies that parallel the development of his own aesthetic consciousness, Joyce evokes Stephen's youth, from his impressionable years as the youngest student at the Clongowed Wood school to the deep religious conflict he experiences at a day school in Dublin, and finally to his college studies, where he challenges the conventions of his upbringing and his understanding of faith and intellectual freedom.
Joyce's highly autobiographical novel was first published in the United States in 1916 to immediate acclaim. Ezra Pound accurately predicted that Joyce's book would "remain a permanent part of English literature", while H. G. Wells dubbed it "by far the most important living and convincing picture that exists of an Irish Catholic upbringing".
    Editorial Reviews:
With a rough-hewn Irish accent, John Lee narrates this classic novel by Ireland's favorite son. Joyce's first novel, this bildungsroman is nothing like his more daunting Ulysses, but it still shows the wide range of style and tone he used in his writing. Narrating any Joyce text is a demanding task, but Lee pulls it off expertly, not trying to make unique voices for characters, but melding them into a coherent overall narration. Americans not accustomed to an Irish accent may need some time to get used to this narration, but it's worth the effort as Lee's delivery certainly provides the local color of this timeless novel.

    Publisher's Summary:
What makes someone ordinary or extraordinary? Can a poor, sickly boy be considered extraordinary? Can extraordinary people take the law into their own hands? Crime and Punishment follows the story of a boy named Raskolnikov who commits a heinous crime because he believes he is in fact extraordinary.
Through an internal battle of whether to confess or not, we follow him through his interactions with a drunk, a prostitute, the government, and his family. We see him do incredible acts of kindness, suffer the consequence of his crime on a physical level, and fall in love with an unlikely character, all while trying to reconcile his ability to be extraordinary and what that really means to society.
Crime and Punishment links families and foes through coincidences as each character impacts Raskolnikov's consciousness. As secrets start to come out, families are torn apart, bonds are broken, and lies are being told; everyone begins to question the intentions of everyone around them.
Raskolnikov must decide whether to confess his crime or to keep harboring the secret, with no one ever realizing how truly extraordinary he is. Will the punishment fit the crime if Raskolnikov's secret comes out?

Sexual degradation, humiliation and erotic pain are eloquently and openly explored in a novel that was to become the most famous and infamous of all de Sade's work.
Despite six reprints the book's candor and sexual explicitness outraged the French establishment so much so that both de Sade and his publisher were arrested and instructed to relinquish any further copies and manuscripts in their possession. Today Justine Volume 1 remains a quintessential chronicle of unspeakable carnal desires.

    Title: Candide and Zadig
    Author: Voltaire
    Narrator: Neville Jason
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 7 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-28-08

    Publisher's Summary:
Voltaire's razor-sharp satire on philosophical optimism, Candide, is coupled here with another of the author's most celebrated works, Zadig. Both challenge the moral and philosophical orthodoxies of the day with humor and sly wit, while parodying the clichéd formulas of so many contemporary novels.
Candide traces the fortunes of its titular character, a staunch optimist who eventually becomes disillusioned by a series of hardships and misfortunes. Zadig likewise follows its main character Zadig, a Babylonian philosopher, as he is subjected to the whims of Fate and the machinations of those around him.

    Genres: Classics, European Literature

Stephen Mitchell's marvelously clear and vivid rendering recreates the robust masculine music of the original. It both hews closely to the Old English and captures its wild energy and vitality, not just as a deep "work of literature" but also as a rousing entertainment that can still stir our feelings and rivet our attention today, after more than a thousand years. This new translation - spare, sinuous, vigorous in its narration, and translucent in its poetry - makes a masterpiece accessible to everyone.

    Genres: Classics, European Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
This collection of tales is set in 1348, the year of the Black Death. Florence is a dying, corrupt city, described plainly in all of its horrors. Seven ladies and three gentlemen meet in a church and decide to escape from the charnel house of reality by staying in the hills of Fiesole; there they pass the time telling stories for 10 days.
They set up a working arrangement whereby each would be king or queen for a day; each day the ruler commanded a story be told following certain stipulations. Their existence is that of the enchanted medieval dreamworld: a paradise of flowers, ever-flowing fountains, shade trees, soft breezes, where all luxuries of food and drink abound. Virtue reigns along with medieval gentilesse in its finest sense.
The stories they weave, however, differ from their own idyllic sojourn. They tell tales about ordinary people, tales marked by intense realism in a world where dreams and enchanted gardens have little place. Boccaccio draws on the actual geography of the region to bring the stories alive; different social classes are portrayed with their own language and clothing. Within the stories told by his 10 refugees from Florence, the satire often bites deep, Boccaccio's comic mood embracing evil and holiness alike with sympathy and tolerance. Like Chaucer, he is indulgent, exposing moral and social corruption but leaving guilty characters to condemn themselves. In its frank, open-minded treatment of flesh as flesh, its use of paradox, cynicism, and realistic handling of character, this work transcends the medieval period and, going beyond the Renaissance, takes its place as universal art.
