Format: Unabridged

Spieldauer: 21 hrs and 31 mins

Sprache: Deutsch

Veröffentlichungsdatum: 07-29-14

Herausgeber: Vorleser Schmidt Hörbuchverlag

Bewertung: 5 von 5 von 1 Stimmen

Kategorien: Classics, European Literature

Jahrhunderts bezeichnete.

Title: The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Confession

Author: Leo Tolstoy, Peter Carson (translator)

Narrator: Ken Kliban

Format: Unabridged

Length: 6 hrs and 16 mins

Language: English

Release date: 07-09-14

Publisher: Audible Studios

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 5 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

A pairing of Tolstoy's most spiritual and existential works of fiction and nonfiction from the renowned translator of Turgenev and Chekhov.

In the last two days of his own life, Peter Carson completed these new translations of The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Confession before he succumbed to cancer in January 2013. Carson, the eminent British publisher, editor, and translator who, in the words of his author Mary Beard, "had probably more influence on the literary landscape of [England] over the past fifty years than any other single person," must have seen the irony of translating Ilyich, Tolstoy's profound meditation on death and loss, "but he pressed on regardless, apparently refusing to be distracted by the parallel of literature and life." In Carson's shimmering prose, these two transcendent works are presented in their most faithful rendering in English. Unlike so many previous translations that have tried to smooth out Tolstoy's rough edges, Carson presents a translation that captures the verisimilitude and psychological realism of the original Russian text.

Title: Am I Insane?

Author: Guy de Maupassant

Narrator: Larry Oliver

Format: Unabridged

Length: 8 mins

Language: English

Release date: 01-17-14

Publisher: Spoken Realms

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

In the decade between 1880 and 1890 Guy de Maupassant published over 300 short stories in a variety of modes, including the supernatural legend, the surprise-ending tale, and the realistic story. He also contributed to the sophistication of the horror story by pushing it even further than Edgar Allan Poe into the modern mode of psychological obsession and madness.

In Am I Insane? Maupassant's focus is on how an obsession becomes so powerful that it is translated into murderous action. The narrator loves a certain woman to madness. However, he also hates her passionately, he intensely desires both to possess her and to kill her. The madness here is similar to the meaningful madness in many Poe stories; there is some basis for the narrator's jealous obsession, both figuratively in the powerful male symbolism of the horse and literally in the narcissism and autoeroticism that the womans daily rides suggest.
