Not about Fundamentalism in its usual sense.

Skillfully written and a fascinating read. The point of view is first person narrative as told by the main character Changez, a Pakistani. Changez has spent 4+ years living in the U.S, attending Princeton University then finally getting a job in N.Y. at a management consulting firm (the letters of whose name also are U.S.) He chances upon an American on the street and invites him to sit down in an outdoor cafe to have some tea. There he spends several hours talking to the American while the two of them share tea and then a meal in an outdoor market place in Lahore. We never find out the American's name or occupation nor why he is there in Pakistan. He is dressed rather formally and seems to have a bulge under his suit jacket (a gun?)

We also do not hear any of the words spoken by the American man but his reactions, questions and answers are revealed by the narrator.

Changez: "I went to university in New Jersey."

(pause)

Changez: "Why yes you have guessed that it was Princeton"

(pause)

Changez: "Oh yes, I liked it very much."

It is a very unique method of telling a written story.

From the conversation we see that Changez, at first, loves his new life in the U.S. feeling fortunate to be a part of such a modern and progressive and forward thinking world. A world where nearly anyone can be successful. He even has the fortune of falling in love with a beautiful American woman. He seems happy. His job takes him around the world, where he is proud to be mistaken as an American.

Then while away on a trip in Manila he is watching the TV as a plane flies into the Twin Towers on 9/11. Returning to N.Y. he begins to notice that Americans, who have previously admired and befriended him, begin to act suspicious of him. He notes that the citizens of New York begin to rally around their flag. He feels like an outsider.

I listened to this book on a road trip w my 11 year old son. The themes and language were mature so I'm glad we listened to it together and often stopped to talk about issues and viewpoints that came up. It was a valuable book that portrayed a marginalized teen with great compassion. Seeing a "troubled kid" and those in his orbit with this type of dimension and humor instead of in a flat meme is important and it was written and read so beautifully we were both riveted all the way to Portland.

Great Narrator

Great book. Wonderful narration. I'm glad that Adam Beach collaborated again with Sherman Alexie. He had already done some fine work for him in the film "Smoke Signals".

Also I will try to comment on some interesting points that Heather remarked on the book. First, she pointed out that Zits trust someone in less that 12 hrs when he usually trust nobody. Well in my opinion he is alone and has nobody in life and many people in need or who lack some meaning in their lives will be instantly attached to someone who is willing to listen and who somehow can answer all of their questions. Many people in need will do anything to be always listened or accepted by this person (unfortunately a lot of the wrong people are aware of this).

Second point, she finds that Zits has an unjustifiable "deep connection to the Indian side of his heritage". I think that this can be somehow justified because he is trying to fill a great void in his life and probably his Indian face and looks encourage him to find out more about himself (or the part of himself that he is missing) and probably that's why he tries to get as much info on this subject as he can, that's why he watches films on History Channel and hangs out with Indian drunks.

Great reader. Hilarious yet serious story.

GREAT choice of reader! The voice just fits and he is extremely expressive. He seems to understand the characters' emotions wonderfully.

Fantasy, reality, religion, and humor

The rarest of combinations when you mix great humor, good fiction, characters you can't help but love, and throw in science fiction, history, and God. Oh and wrap it in a package of the perfect narrator for the story. I've always really enjoyed Sherman Alexie's writing, but hearing his work perfectly performed was even better.

Excellent, unforgettable!

I actually work with foster kids in the social work field. I enjoy books with the perspective of a youth.

I Love This Series

A really upbeat book that is such a pleasant listen. I really enjoy hearing about the ups and downs of life in the village and all the wanderings out in the countryside. Quirky outlandish behavior exhibited by doctors and patients alike. A recommended series.

Such fun!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Each character has his/her flaws and virtues and we truly care about each one. The main plot and all the smaller ones are suspenseful or entertaining or uplifting or just downright amusing. The narrator is tops. I highly recommend this book for its joyful approach to life.

Brilliant! A Lovely Read

Since my husband's family lives in Northern Ireland and I have visited many times, I could relate to the sayings and the manner of speaking. I started to check out airline tickets as soon as I was done! The time period was a few years ago but the basic life style is still there; not entirely gone. All the characters were precious in their own right. I plan to do a listen again. This book could not do itself justice by reading the print, but with Keating reading it the book just came to life.

A wonderful getaway

I loved this book. It wasn't hard to get into, the characters are warm and real. John Keating is the perfect narrator who gives the story a feeling of validity. If you want to curl up with a cup of tea and get away, this is it, as are the sequels.

a true pleasure

this is a wounderfull listen. I entend to buy a hard back for my library. it is bound to be a clasic. it made me laugh out loud, wishing i were there with them. it isn't often i find a book that keeps me wanting more and on the edge of my seat but this one has. thank you

Shudderingly Good!

I admit I am biased about this book. I read it as a teenager and it was one of my formative experiences. However, I would not be so biased if it were not genuinely great. This is a novel which plumbs parts of human experience that are not usually dealt with so bluntly. For example, it has things to say about body anxieties that are almost unheard today. And it has one of the best portrayals of the concept of the horror of the ordinary that I have ever seen. It is what I point to when I want to explain that concept to people who have never felt it.

Let me put it this way, I have read this book at least five times in the last five years. Then I downloaded this audiobook, and I have listened to it twice in the last two weeks. It is just that good.

If you are not in the mainstream, if you are a freak, you owe yourself this book. Really.

I long for another Geek!

Excellent. There is more here than words, the author set the stage for deep searching into oneself, who really are the geeks? The choices of the parents in this novel and the results there of are so unconventional it is shocking, but written so well you find yourself siding with the characters. I enjoyed every word spoken by this terrific narrator, one of the best, she is a marvel!

Love it!

i thought this book was brilliant, terrible, awfully, at times painfully brilliant. Ms. Moore has a lovely voice and tells the story beautifully.

Bizarre - Captivating - Intense!

I just finished listening to this book and am missing it already - I loved the ending but I didn't want it to end! If you are squeamish or averse to foul language then prepare to be horrified - if you are a bit twisted and used to graphic detail then prepare to be horrified as well (in the best way possible!) The story is intricate and chock full of sub-plots that move along at a perfect pace with the overall plot line. The narrator does a great job of relating the personalities and feelings of the characters, although the male voices are a bit off (however it's hard to fault a female narrator for not being able to pull off deep male voices with great success). Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will definitely be checking out other titles by this author.

Unpredictable

This was a captivating book. I hated to arrive at work or at home because I would have to stop listening and get on with real life. The characters in this book were so abnormal, but they became a real family as time went on. Just when I thought it couldn't get any more strange, something else would happen. It was a little disconcerting at the very beginning, but once I got into it and really listened to the characters, not just thinking about how insane it was to manufacture a freak show, I enjoyed the book and the relationships very much. I do recommend this book.

The book is wonderful as always, but.....

The book was good, like everything in this series has been. Karon is a wonderful writer, and this book has new and interesting information about things that have been mentioned or alluded to in previous volumes.

BUT..... I hate to say it, but it was positively painful for me to listen to the narration of this new addition to the Mitford series. I realize that John McDonough would be a hard act to follow. However, it wasn't simply that I was wasn't hearing the kind, wise voice of Father Tim I was used to. I was prepared to hear a different voice and I really tried to like it. But although Scott Sowers is a good narrator using a nice mix of voice changes for the various characters, the overall feel of it was disconcerting. So many of the things Father Tim 'said' in Sowers voice came off sounding faintly smart-alecky instead of thoughtful. That probably wasn't the intent, but that's how it sounded to me. I'm resolved to having to hear a different narrator. I'm just not sure that Sowers was the best choice.

IMHO

The book is great (as Ms. Karon's books are). However, I was disappointed in the narration. Not that it is not good narriation, but this is a character that has already been fully developed for audio and is unrecognizable in this narration. Fr Tim does not even come across as the same character.

Interesting start to a new series

Any additional comments?

I have to say right up front that I really miss John McDonough's narration for the Mitford series. The new narrator was just too young to do the story justice. The character he is giving voice to is 70 years old the the reader sounded very young---too young. Further, the tone used in the reading made well known characters from the series sound flip and sarcastic.

My feelings are mixed about the book. The story was helpful in adding depth to the character of Father Tim by exploring things from his past only hinted at in the pervious books in the series. However, at times I found the whole thing a bit overly dramatic and heavy handed--and on occasion down right unbelievable. But in the end I am glad I listened to this first book in the new series as it was atmospheric and portrayed southern country life beautifully.

Still a wonderful listen

Though accustomed to the other wonderful narrator who has done all of the Mitford books, I still found this recording quite nice. I recommend both the book and the recorded performance.

Give Him A Break!

Like many others have said, there is some good and bad to this story. You know Mr. Grisham is at his best with lawyers, courtrooms and the like. But I applaud his efforts to go somewhere else. To me, it improves his talent level! Even though the new style may need some work.

I am not a football fan, nor have I ever traveled across the great seas. However, I expand my horizons through reading. This book did that for me. Yes, some of the detailed descriptions of both the sport and the scenery got tedious, and I am not a fan of loose sex, but I have been more bored or confused or disgusted by other selections than this one.

There was no mystery, no twisting plot, but there was a story. The main character was enlightened in the end. We got to experience that change of heart along with him. That was the story. Predictable? Maybe. Entertainng? Definitely.

The narration was well done. Nothing spectacular, but well done. I appreciate Frank Muller and Michael Beck from numerous previous titles, but Mr. Welch did a fine job.

If you enjoy Grisham, you will still enjoy this slightly different style of his stories.

A little slice of Italy

I have read all of his other books. I believe this book has a unique quality -- it lacks the urgency of the other stories, at the same time it invites you to consider why you like the things that make up your life. There is a subtle suggestion that you may be too serious or too structured. You may have been patterned to think you like the pleasures in your life. The Italian option will no doubt inspire many who read about Parma and the Panthers. This felt to me me like another trip to Italy. I have been to many of the places in the story and hearing about them again makes me want to see them in person again. Thank you for the vacation. Thanks also for the visit to the world of those who truly love football. I hope there are more of these stories to come...

Enjoyable

Grisham is a very good story teller. His writing is fluid and descriptive. While this story may not resound with thunder and lightening, it is solid and enjoyable. It tells a realistic and possible story about honesty with yourself and others. It does have quite a bit of football game descriptions in it, but they are easy to follow and if you like Grisham, but are not familiar with football, don't let that stop you from listening to this good story about a good guy. As for the reader, he is very constant. I liked his easy style and his different accents were quite believable.

A little less drama, a lot more substance, please

Although the book is beautifully written and dramatic, seamlessly going back in time and returning once again to the present, the book is lacking in several ways.

First, I do not feel as if I can really see the characters in this tale as well as I have been able to in other books by Picoult. Chris, Emile, and their parents seem very one-dimensional. Second, the substance is not there. There is lots of heart, as the teens are "soulmates," but seeing them actually live it out leaves you feeling flat and unconvinced. Third, the parents of each child are said to be overjoyed at the thought of the two teens dating and one day marrying. But Picoult also says Emily's family is Jewish and Chris' family is not. I do not know any Jewish family that would be excited for their daughter to be marrying outside their faith. In fact, some kids are disowned for doing so. Fouth, Picoult does not make a good enough argument for me to believe that suicide was Emily's only way out. It just didn't make sense, knowing what the author tells about the girl.

And fifth, my biggest issue with the book, did Picoult just get tired of the characters and not finish the book? There are so many questions left unanswered! I was an English major in college, and am all for books with loose ends, which let the reader take from it what he or she will, but Picoult signs off on an unfinished script, in my opinion.

I thought I liked the book as I was listening to it, but afterward, I feel cheated, because I did get emotionally involved, but there was no payoff for it. I was just left with an empty, hollow feeling and frustration.

Picoult asks a very good question (do we ever really know our children?) and addresses a very controversial subject (teen suicide). The problem is, she doesn't stick it out long enough for any answers to come. Move on to Picoult's "Plain Truth" or "My Sister's Keeper."

Great Book

Although the topic may seem like this book would be very depressing, I laughed through half of the text. The book kept my attention right to the end. I thoroughly enjoy Jodi Picoult's work

Getting Repetitive

Maybe I have been "reading" too many of her books lately, but they seem to be getting repetitive. Jodi Picoult has a way of getting in deep and telling all sides of a story, but the last three books I have gotten (Mercy, My Sister's Keeper, and now The Pact) have been all too similar.

Someone is dead (or dying). Family and loved ones are devastated. Someone has to be blamed and held responsible. Everything is portrayed in such black and white contrast that I cannot choose who is right and who is wrong. Reality is, that is life.

But Picoult holds it out there as if one has to either hate the "bad guy" or love them, not both.

free food for thought - beautifully satisfying

I have grown a bit wary of novels that describe quirky families and attempt to turn the psycho dramatics of relationships into entertainment . In broad strokes these books sometimes lack a depth missing descriptions of the inner turmoil that underlies behavior. This novel succeeds on every level, FFFM is a revelation. Characters are drawn with a brutally compassionate wisdom and detail that brings them to life. Although, the story revolves around the Korean American , recent Ivy League grad, Casey Han, as she moves from college into the "real" world we become intimately familiar with the network of people that touch her life. Each one of these becomes 3-D and real with unique motives, limitations and hopes. Each personal experience reflected with dignity thus, earning earning my compassion. Ms Lee addresses the larger issues of race, class and the affect they have on our self image and soul to the still larger issues OF LOVE, RELIGION, FAITH, that commonly manifest for most of us human creatures as we go about living our life . Ms Lee has sensitively describes the especially awkward time of moving from college age into the adult world; from "knowing things" we learned into "knowing" from experience.. Lee is an artist of the first magnitude she has the emotional genius to be able to write with a "spiritually evolved" open heart, giving her the ability to use the lightest touch to challenge her readers with the deepest of ideas. WHAT A GIFT!!! I will wait impatiently for her next book. In the interim I will miss the characters of this beautiful book wondering what happens to them next, they feel like friends. This audio book is right at the top---with Bryce Courtney, James Herriot and a few others. Lee can be ranked with the talented Pulitizer winner J. Lahiri (THE NAMeSAKE) in writing insightfully about the American immigrant experience.

Well worth reading

This is the story of a Korean-American young woman who has difficulty finding her way after graduating from Princeton and returning to New York City. Irresponsible and naive in the beginning, Casey overspends on luxuries she cannot afford and makes many poor choices. (I had often wondered what makes some women compulsively shop for unnecessary luxuries they cannot afford. This novel gave me some sympathetic insight.) In the years that follow Casey develops more maturity. We root for her to handle her life better, but she sometimes continues to make some errors in judgment right to the conclusion of this novel. In a sense, this is the novel's greatest fascination, and it is precisely what saves this novel from being banal.

This book was funny, light hearted and lots of fun. I'm such a Pride & Prejudice fan that this would make a great adventure to take with my friends. I would recommend this to all sappy P&P fans. The narrator did a great job with this book.

A Book Which Can be Put Down

Katherine Kellgren does such a good job narrating that she almost rescues this book. This is an interesting take on the Austen universe but I have to confess that this book can be put down. I am not certain why my reaction is so lukewarm. I think it because the real parts of the story and play acting are difficult to distinguish. I also couldn't seem to sympathize with the heroine. I really didn't like her and I don't know why. It puzzles me for I tend to suspend my disbelief on command of the author. I am willing to be led where ever the author wants to go. In this case, I think the heroine led a boring life, is bored, wants to be rescued and does nothing for herself: in short, she is boring. What kind of man would want to be around her? To say this in a different way: Miss Elizabeth Bennet wasn't sitting on her hands dreaming of a Darcy coming to her rescue. She lived and took her pleasures and disappointments as she found them. She was never boring. She will never be boring. Dittos for Anne Elliot, Elinor Dashwood, Fanny Price, Catherine Morland and certainly Emma Woodhouse. If woman (or a man) is leading an empty life, it is not Mr. Darcy's fault. Look to the mirror.

Entertaining book

Both my 17 year old daughter and I (a 46 year old mom) loved this book. We're both Jane Austen fans, and the idea of being able to escape to a Jane Austen-type of world is intriguing. I think all of Shannon Hale's books are great, and always look forward to her next one.

Fun read

I thought this was entertaining, although a bit slow and unbelievable at parts. We read it for our book club and most everyone got some fun out of reading it. It's in no way deep, but it is clean (no sex scenes) and still romantic.

Light and fun

This book was a quick,easy listen that was light and fun. It made me laugh many times. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Do They Give Awards For "Best Reader"?

I'm not at all surprised to have enjoyed this yarn - Christopher Moore's twisted plots and California Speak dialogue is impossible to resist, even at its least inspired. What did surprise me was how much this book benefitted from being read aloud by Susan Bennett. The ease with which Ms. Bennett switches from one urban California accent to another is simply amazing. From Hispanic Cop to Goth Valley Girl to Chinese Granny Just Off The Boat to Jock Doofus to African-American MBA, you name it-Bennett can mimic it to perfection. This woman needs an exclusive contract to record ALL of Christopher Moore's works - nobody else can do him complete justice.

Funny, Sad, and well done!

Heard "You Suck" on XM radio, bought all 3 audios. Gotta start with Bloodsucking Fiends, then You Suck, and last Bite Me. ALL 3 were great. Susan Bennett is super reading this to you! Money well spent!

Like visiting old friends

I really enjoyed this book. The story races along at a breakneck pace mixing both action and comedy. Christopher Moore does such a good job creating life like characters that it is easy to enter this story and suspend belief in the supernatural. The narrator does an incredible job of giving voice to all the characters.

This book almost got me fired--lol

This is a great book, great reading, and literally laugh out loud funny. I generally listen to Audio books while working, I have a multi-track mind so they help me focus.

It's probably helpful if you've first read "Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story" for the story's background, but unfortunately it's not available here on Audible.

And if you're looking for a profound, and deeply spiritual or intellectually stimulating novel, this isn't it. In fact, if you're looking for a book with a plot, well... this ain't got much of one.
