Much better than Teach Yourself or Colloquial versions of same language

I am currently a beginner independently learning Polish with this text and two others (Teach Yourself Polish and Colloquial Polish). I have to admit that Spoken World: Polish, despite being only over a dozen lessons, is far better, in my opinion, than the other two in terms of dialogues, grammar explanations, readings, and useful exercises. I recommend Spoken World first and foremost over the other two.

Included in the course are six audio CD's and a textbook. Don't let the textbook's rather small-looking size fool you: It is full of the best appendices (verb conjugations and aspect, and, most importantly, as is critical in any Slavic language, a boatload of nouns in all the declension patterns), dialogues, and exercises I have seen. I don't consider myself to be unable to learn languages (I speak French and German fluently, and I'm learning Hungarian now), but with a language like Polish (even with my minor in Russian), you need a very thorough and clearly written text to even begin to penetrate the difficulty of Polish pronunciation and grammar. It is because of those mentioned appendices and the rather clear grammar explanations that led me to give high marks to this course package. In fact, I particularly like how the grammar topics are introduced with examples from the previous dialogues.

More often than not, language books will introduce a topic and illustrate the topic with a sentence that may (or may not) be disparately related to the dialogues or readings. This book introduces a topic (e.g. the instrumental case) and brings in examples directly from the dialogue you read when the lesson began (e.g. I am a student in your class). Another nice addition in each chapter is a reading passage (separate from the dialogue). These are rather short (ca. 100 to 200 words) passages written in full-blown, grammatical Polish, with a translation to follow. I found these to be invaluable as they helped me to utilize all the grammar topics introduced in that chapter. The exercises look like they are short and rather easy to complete. In fact, they are rather challenging (at least for me), and they require a good deal of effort. The audio CD's are fabulous. There are three to use for 'at home' with the text dialogue in front of you, and three for 'on the go' to be used without the text. The latter are great because they present not just the chapter's dialogue, but also explanations of grammar topics, examples of these topics, and even exercises.

The only main draw back is the glossary in the back of the book. It is not very extensive in that some words used in exercises do not appear in the glossary. I found this to be a little frustrating, and, hence, the reason I voted four, instead of five, stars.

Very effective

The earworms approach to language tapes is to have a background of music. This is a great idea and works. If only to stop you being as bored as you usually are listening to language tapes. The music is very appealing. the production just misses out on being fabulous, by repeating some of the most basic words over and over again at the beginning of the instruction, and then whizzing too quickly through more complex structures later on.

As easy as can be

The guy has such a beautiful voice I would listen to him reading a telephone directory. Come to think of it, that is more or less what I have done several times now. Nothing is going to make learning a language effortless, but you could not ask for more pleasant, patient and gentle teachers. 'Rapid' have produced a method rich in rhythm and repetition, which manages not to irritate, patronise or bore. If you have even a tiny amount of diligence and determination these audios will help you on your way.

A husband who wants to reconnect with his roots

My husband wanted to have this book and actually he likes it because he wanted to reconnect with his roots. He is learning fast sentences and unusual words. It's easy understanding book for this difficult language.

The best for begginers

It is a really useful book for people with no time to learn swedish using the long way. Practical words, phrases, idioms, and expresions. If you only want to communicate accurate in many situations without any idea what the swedish is, This is the right book, the cassete is very interactive. Don't forget you Swedish dicctionary Berlitz also, is really good despite its size. Both, are easy to carry on with you all time.

I bought the Swedish book a few months ago and it is very useful and has lots of words and phrases in it. I would deff reccommend to buy it if you want to learn Swedish.

Not Helpful

Let me start by saying that I know you can't learn a language in an hour. I didn't expect that. I just thought it would be cool to learn a few basics. The program says that they will say the word or phrase, then break it down, leaving some time to repeat it. My main complaints are that I couldn't understand a lot of what they were saying, and when they actually did break down a phrase, it was still too long to keep it straight. Then they didn't leave much time to repeat it. I think they tried to squeeze too many words and phrases into an hour.

How about the handbook that goes with it?

This might be much more useful if the link to the handbook that goes with it actually worked and was available.

Truly an excellent & natural way to learn this difficult language

One of my big gripes is that virtually every language course out there wants you to believe that they teach language the way we learning it as children. Get real!!! Watching my grandchild learning to speak and remembering how my children learned to speak English, I can categorically state that none of them learned to read while learning to speak, much less "good" grammar skills. They did not learn to read until they were 5 or 6, and as for grammar, there are facets that they did not learn until college. That is why I prefer to begin a new language with audio only.

This is an excellent beginner's course. Unlike many of courses in this format, the pauses to repeat the language are sufficiently long enough that you can repeat the phrase before the instructor moves on to the next phrase.

Naturally, the pace of speaking is slower than natural -- after all when you are just beginning your ear is not adjusted to understanding a language as it is naturally spoken. There is a pamphlet that comes with the CDs to provide a transliterated dictionary of the words used in each section. Naturally, you are not going to be reading this brochure while driving, but it is a nice fall back when at home and uncertain how you want to pronounce a word.

Keep in mind that this program is in colloquial EGYPTIAN Arabic, not Modern Standard Arabic. Egyptian colloquial Arabic is widely understood because of the predominance of Egyptian dialect used in movies, TV programs, etc. If you are using these tapes to supplement a course in MSA you are going to find some differences. MSA is the literary language of educated Arabs (and others) and is familiar throughout the Middle East, however you will be understood in either dialect. If you are going to use movies and TV shows to supplement your studies, you will be listening to Egyptian (except for Alzeera, which insists on the use of MSA).

I highly recommend these tapes if you want to learn Arabic. Although certainly no expert in the language, I have found them to be a useful introduction to the Arabic language.

Learn Arabic for Travel

I liked this cd set. It provides fun dialogue in Egyptian colloquial. I listen to it on my way to work in the car. I would recommend it for those interested in learning basic Egyptian dialect such as those planning to travel. I even uploaded the cds to my ipod to listen at work. It also comes with a companion pamphlet.
