Another Eoin Colfer Winner

Another Eoin Colfer winner. This one will also appeal to adults versus most of his other works which aim more for young readers to teenagers.

The story is a type of "Count of Monte Cristo" tale but with some wonderful twists and innovations. The story of early flying makes it real magic.

The reader is awesome with just a little Irish accent to giving the reading flavor without making it difficult for your typical American, like me, to understand.

Fun read and think it would make a great movie...

The author of the Artemis Fowl series brings this story of an island kingdom from the last century alive with excitement. The requisite princess and hero start as babes and suffer through love, murder, greed, power hungry attacks,a prison like the Chateau D'If, and the imagination to want to fly. There are great characters who support the story throughout.

So much depth and enthusiasm! I'd listen to John Keating reading a grocery list.

There is a scene reminiscent of Peter Pan, when the lost boy looks in on his family years later and sees they have another child.

Very enjoyable!

I really enjoyed this book - not as good as Half-Moon or some of the Artemis books, but still entertaining. Classic Colfer quirky style. John Keating does an outstanding job of reading.

Takes place in the late 1800's and Conor wants to fly. Actually, you could say he was born flying. Life is good for the young Conor - loving family, the king's favor (and the king's daughter too), and an inspiring tutor. But all is not well on the island when the king's enemy decides that Conor is a threat.

Rich Imaginative Fantastic World

An excellent book. I enjoy reading in general and this book was no exception- until I got to the end. The last few pages moved it from an enjoyable read to an instant favorite, and made the second time through even more enjoyable than the first.

James A. Owen brings to life a world where our myths and legends and many classic stories are real. The more you know mythology and the more widely read you are, the more pieces you will recognize from stories you already love.

"Here, There be Dragons" is excellent as a stand alone story, but also begins a series that gives so much more depth to the world we are introduced to in the "Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica."

Great fun, and wonderful Easter Eggs

I liked this book a great deal, and the ending made me love it. There are some wonderful allusions to other great works of fiction spread throughout, but the ending was absolutely brilliant!

Good fantasy

I heard a short review of this book on a podcast and immediately picked it up. It's everything that the review led me to believe--an well-told story. The author keeps the story moving and coherent throughout the book. I didn't stumble in any plot holes, and the book followed a logical progression. The narrator also did a good job bringing the book to life. I'm looking forward to the next volume and hope that Audible picks up the others.

great fun

Kids loved this story we heard it in the car and it was fun. Nice literary references. Kids say 5 * I say 3* a little predictable but fun.

Here, There Be Dragons is just a fun, sit-back-and-entertain-me book. The story is easy to follow, has interesting twists and most important, the characters are easy to like and care about. James Langton did an excellent job narrating. Bought this book on sale, just because.... Now that we've finished it, we're thinking we want to know what happens in the next book.

Foundling - an adventure tale

This book is an amazing mixture of Treasure Island, Oliver Twist and Frankenstein, but it's much better than any of those. The Half Continent is a dangerous place and is populated with fascinating characters. Rosamund is a boy cursed with a girl's name, and his adventures as he travels from an orphanage to his first posting in the service of the Emperor will keep you on the edge of your seat. The foreshadowing is masterful. The audiobook is wonderful, I hear something new every time I listen. You really do need the print version as well. Have you ever read an illustrated book where the artist didn't bother to read the story? Well, that's not a problem here. This book started out as an art student's portfolio, and there is also an "Explicarium" to help you keep track of all the new words, people and places you will encounter.

Excellent Story for the Whole Family

Good story for adults and 11 yrs old and up.

Perfect book for "family time" or on a road trips.

The feel after listening to it is the happy glow you have walking out of a movie theater watching a happy movie.

While this is a book that will suck you into the series, it ends a good place to feel it was complete.

NOTE:I do recommend using wireless Bluetooth speakers for listing to audio books instead of ear buds (connected to smart phone). Speakers are better for preventing hearing loss vs earbuds. And this is possibly the solution for a family listen to a audio book together.

Really cool fantasy/adventure series

It's short (compared to some of my favorites), but what it lacks in size it makes up for in content. The level of detail is perfect, the world and characters are believable, and the story is interesting and fun. This series is definitely targeted for readers younger than myself, but it's one of those that's written well enough to be enjoyed by all. (Examples of other books targeted for younger readers I've enjoyed include the Bartimaeus series, Lord of the Rings, Ender's Game, the Discworld books, the Wheel of Time series, etc.).

D.M. Cornish....A New Star?

This review is a long time in coming. I first purchased this audio book on a whim back in 2007. Probably close to the time it first came out. At that time I had no idea who D.M. Cornish was, and had very little idea of what the book was about. I certainly didn't expect the rich and wonderfully detailed world that I found within. Not that I can say I regret it in the least.

I had read lots of book, but this is the best yet. I'm looking far ward in finding the rest of the series. If any one is stuck for a good book this is the book to read. I'm sure you would like it. If any one read this book, I'm sure that they would like it. This book fits for all ages. I hope audio.com would really conceder recording the whole series of Leven Thumps. I like this book because the narrator is great, the author is very good at making his reader continue reading and the series is very interesting. Again I hope that audible.com would record books by this author.

Family Fun

My sons and I have really enjoyed this series and hoping for more on audio because it is read in such a way that the imaginative characters seem to come to life. It is a feel good about yourself story that both gripping and humorous.

Book 3 won the 2008 Nebula Award

I had never heard of this series and thought I'd take a chance on them because of the author. These are well written, thoughtful books that really deserve as much attention as her other works. Each audio reader does a good job. Each book could stand on its own, too. The stories are complex (I mean that in a good way - as in, not simplistic). It's just good literature. (...hence the Nebula award.) She respects the intelligence of the reader/listener and the maturity of her characters' thoughts and actions reflects that.

I really enjoyed Le Guin's Earthsea trilogy, so for those of you looking to compare them, this has a less dark theme and these are more about the people than about the magic - if that matters to you. As I listened to all three books, I found myself thinking, "These are really good books!" as I got into each. And they stayed good right to the ending of each. They really deserve just as much attention as other bestsellers in the field.

LeGuin is guaranteed to please!

This is classic Ursula LeGuin. She tells a story which is interesting, drawing you in to the action and at the same time teaching lessons about kindness, understanding and acceptance of yourself and others. She weaves this into a tale mixed with magic and fantasy. It is written for "children" but is a great read for any age.

Great for Anyone

This is a great book whether you are into science fiction or not. It is thought-provoking and very emotional. It has turns in the story that makes it fun to listen to as well. Definitely recommend it.

Unique

This is a very unique story, but it seems more like a diary-type story that jumps around a bit. There was no real climax. The story itself was intriguing, but I think the narrator made the story a bit more dull then if you were to have read it yourself.

quiet tale

I have had the opportunity to read 6 le guin books thus far, a mere drop in the ocean with regards to her large body of work. I would boldly venture to say that if you are an " A type , fast thinking, fast doing personality " her books may not be for you. Her story telling is quite , and un hurried . It is as though , the story teller has all the time in the world to spin the yarn. This method of story telling suits my sensibilities . I enjoy well put together thoughts and we'll written prose. Miss Le guin excels at both. I thought the raconteur was good, but not exceptional . He was believable and that's what counts . I had the great privilege to hear Rob Inglis do the three parts of " earth sea series" and I was blown away. He is a power house , yet quite in his delivery a brilliant decision to use him as the narrator . He added such depth to the story.

I highly recommend this book to any and all. While it is listed as a young adult book, the description of the Australian wilderness, and the human reaction to death and war is right on for all ages. While starting a bit slowly it really gets moving after the war begins. The narrator is great and the story moves right along, making you want to hear what happens next.

Wonderful

I was born in Australia and all the cultural references in the language came flooding back. I guess I may be a bit biased because of that but seriously the story was a gripping and thought provoking tale. Adventure at its best. I'm now hooked and am so happy that audible has the sequels available. I since read that this work won many awards as book for late teens. Don't let that put you off its not just a kids book! It's quite dark and serious in places.

Suzi does a great job bringing each character alive in a way print just cannot manage.

Sarah's Best

This is the best of Ms. Dessen's work: Macy is believable, relate-able and someone I would want to be friends with, her story is worth hearing. Her mom and sister also ring true and Wes is someone to dream about. The timeline is realistic; the story classic and well told. Ms. Nielsen's reading has perfect pitch for the subject and dialogue.

This story is also good for family trips, since the cursing is minimal and the content, while emotionally interesting, is mild. Better though for families with daughters.

I loved this book and I loved the audio version.

irritating narrator

When I listened to the sample I heard a bit of irritating background noise but assumed it was because of the poor quality of my computer speakers. Not so. This narrator speaks as though she has a very dry mouth or something. The noises I heard are coming from her mouth. Absolutely grating. And she pauses for excessive amounts of time. Also, her voice is way too old to be believable as a seventeen year old girl. I regret downloading it, wish I had just read the paper copy.

Truly Brilliant.

After I listened to this book I went to Sarah's website as I wanted to learn where her story of loss came from. I downloaded this for my pre-teens to listen to but did so initially as a screening. I know that my children will definately benefit and be able to relate to the conflict of moving forward. I'm so grateful for the story and the narrator did an excellent job.

this is, in my opinion, Dessen's best work to date. Listening to it made me realize how well written it is, and made me misty eyed at times. the narrator was pretty good; the only problem i had was how she recited Wes's voice. i thought it was a little strange. Overall, this being my first Audible purchase, i will certainly purchase more books in the future. two thumbs way up!

A fun read

I loved this book. I'm not a teenager and didn't know it was aimed at that age group when I downloaded it. But I was engaged from the first paragraph. The narrator is perfect for the character Suze. I'm actually going to get the rest of these because I enjoyed the first one so much. Guilty pleasures I guess.

This works for adults

I saw the review by someone that stated this was not a book for adults and con not disagree more. It my be a little cute at times but the story was good and the writer has put enought depth to make it work for grown people. Maybe it is because I so have teenage kids but I very much enjoyed the book and the serries.

Young adult? Only because it's not dirty

I gave this book a try because I like the paranormal genre, and honestly, because it was on sale for $4.95. I will give new authors a try for that price, and this book was a very good choice. The main characters were teenagers, but the writing was in no way juvenile. The book followed the paranormal romance/mystery genre pretty closely with the only difference being that it wasn't dirty. I guess that's what made it young adult, but it in no way effected the storyline. I really enjoyed it, and will probably try another book in this series.

A Delight

What a delightful story. I know this is a teen/YA story but I thoroughly enjoyed it. A decent platform for the start of a new series. Starting with a new blended family, a new school and friends. Suze is a strong character that is kind hearted and wise. She knows what it feels like to be an outsider and refuses to exclude anyone because they are different. Wish more teens would read stories like these, there are definite lessons to be learned.

Johanna Parker did a wonderful job narrating but then she is the reader for the Sookie Stackhouse novels. :)
